At the 17-second Mark, I automatically gave this video a thumbs up LMAO. Thanks for the honest and really enjoyable video. An honest truck doing honest things. Hard to find these days. Love those late 90s F-150s. Thanks brother. Stay safe in Georgia. Cheers from Canada
I had an '06 F150 XL with the 4.2L V6. Sadly transmission went at 202k. It was mostly city mileage and carried loads from my grandfather's company. It was slow but it was fun in the snow with no 4x4 lol. I "bought' it for $1. My grandfather gave me the $1 back as well as the bill of sales and laminated it for my birthday. Wasn't too reliable but it brought good memories lol. Very positive if it had way less mileage I would have kept it for much longer.
As far as American-made V6 half ton pickups go made between the mid 90's to late 2000's, these seem like the only one that's worthwhile. I've been wanting to get one and can't decide between the 4.2 and 4.6 for the occasional haul.
Oh yeah if you want a reliable engine and don’t need to tow anything major definitely go with the 4.2, and that means a lot coming from me being a non Ford guy.
4.2 in my opinion has a better torque curve than the 4.6 especially down low. Also its an incredibly simple pushrod engine with the only "tech" being fuel injection and electronic throttle on the 11th gens.
@@flyingbuzzard8868 Engine size has nothing to do with towing! I have a 2016 Edge2.0 4 and my wife has a 2018 edge with the 6 an my Tow ratings are twice what she has!
I have a 2003 f150 with the 4r70w automatic transmission and the 4.2l and I have 337,000 miles on mine on the original engine and transmission runs and shifts like a dream. Still on the original fuel pump and the original radiator. And the original power steering pump. My Truck actually has closer to 380,000 because I changed the gears and the odometer is off by a considerable amount. Only things I’ve changed is the intake gaskets and water pump and all the pulleys. Run AMSOIL signature series engine oil in it. I put my truck on a diet of all AMSOIL fluids and it’s worked out great. Trans don’t leak a drop. I changed the fluid and pan for a pan with a plug at 270,000 miles. Trans pan looked clean. Only issues I have at the current millage is leaking oil pan gasket and rear main seal. As reliable as the truck has been I’m going to pull the transmission and change all that out in a few weeks I owe it that as good as it’s been to me. And I run the shit out of the truck I don’t baby it. It just takes it. Motor don’t make any noise on cold starts and it don’t burn any oil it just leaks the shit out lol.
I pulled a trailer with a Buick century on the trailer with 1999 Ford F-150 extended cab with 4.2 XLT truck and it pulled great and got good gas mileage the whole way pulled it 45 minutes, mine has the heavy duty spring package on it though that Ford offered on the 1999 f150 4.2 XLT model
Those are excellent trucks. Ive owned 3. Including my current one that wad inhereted from my father with the 4.2L. Im going to put some money in her and get it all the way right. May even deal with the stealership for the work😂
Hi, I have a 1998 F150 automatic 4.2 V6 163,150 odometer I’ve been using Royal Purple High Mileage with Engine Additive, Engine Restorer also marvels mystery oil 500mile before every oil change it make sure to get all the junk out. It softens it so it doesn’t plug your oil pump screen. I can say I found out some great things about Ultra Platinum Pennzoil and Valvoline Ultra High Mileage. Only using K&N Gold Filter. Changing oil after 5K-6K 🧰🤙😎
I inherited my grandads 98 150 4.2 & I’m steady redoing the entire truck I just got the motor & tranny built Cam in it now is 218/224 bored 30 over header’s true dual exhaust to borla pro xs muffler’s and she’s really spicy now and sounds like a v8 at idle & all the way out no bumble bee scream lol I still got a lot more I’m going to do to it with all the extra upgrades I did throughout the motor and transmission and cold air intake and everything I am better that lil engine is making lil over 300 horses
@@JoesGoldenGarage Tough as nails, cheap to run, decently economical(especially with the 5 speed), lots of torque for hauling. Its a great engine, wish it was a bit smoother though, it really doesn't like to be pushed over 4500rpm lol. I can feel the vibrating through my shifter from the engine revving so high
I have a 2002 Supercrew FX4 5.4 and was curious on how these 4.2’s run. They seem pretty good enough for a light single cab work truck. I don’t think my truck is much faster.
I've a 4.2 2005 and have pulled 17'500lbs without problems, transmission is fine and good gas mileage. If u want a good work truck get one of these trucks.
Great funny video. QUESTION. I just inherited a 2001 e150 cargo van with this same engine and 110k miles. It idles like crap.. Where should I start??? Jim
This one does too. Sometimes stalls. I also got an check engine for an 02 sensor. I just have not had time to dig deeper to figure out what’s going on but it’s a heckuva motor and hard to beat.
I've got a 2005 4.2l f150, I'm installing a jms pedalmax and diablosport tuner. Other than lightening it up, what could I do to get more hp and torque? Next, I'm gonna put an intake and better exhaust to try and get it to be more powerful. Do you have any other ideas? I'm gonna be pulling a trailer starting Monday and I'm looking for some ideas.. Great video, subbed and liked! Have a fantastic day my friend!
Is the v6 good for hauling i want to get ond but ik v8s suck on gas but the throttle response and shit is great gonna be hauling heavy wooden logs and have to be 4x4
i have a 01 f150 with the 4.2L V6 and i was wondering do you think it could reliably pull a small dual axle car trailer with a 2300lb dirt track car on it? the whole load cant weight anything over 3800lbs
I had a 2000 4.2 5 speed. Pulled a a 2000lb fertilizer spreader loaded with 3 tons on triple 19 fertilizer no problems 50-55mph on a 4 lane hilly highway. Before that hauls 10,000 lb. Of scrap metal truck and trailer loaded. That one was hairy but no issues. Of course 45mph max on that one.
So I have a 1997 with the 4.6l v8 and I’m looking to build a 14k dual axle trailer, do you think it’ll pull it good or should I go smaller in the trailer?
Imagine the homeless sleeping out in that cold man. Thats got to be hard. I would build a fire or break into a old construction site. Sleep in a porto potty lol something

I like your 97' F-150. I bought a new 2006 F-150 with a 4.2 at the time. I loved it. Greetings from a local boy in Kennesaw.
Greetings to u as well!

Both are great engines, can't go wrong with either. My 4.6 pulled better I think

Same truck but Mines a 5 speed manual

Wow this is really cool! I think it’s awesome you’ve done the performance upgrades on this V6! I would love to drive it sometime
I have an 07 with the 5 speed and optional 3.55 axle ratio. I love it, ill never sell the thing. Hell, I even store it for winter to keep salt away

467k miles on it and no big issues with it
I just bought a 2002 4.2 150 today
Just a great ole truck
I have an 08 these things are amazing!
Love em
It does have reserve tank that holds 5 gallons
Cool. Never knew
I pull all kinds of shit with mine at this point, had to drag my neighbors 55 f250 up a hill a few weeks ago, good running trucks
I would pull loads like that my Mitsubishi mighty Max all the time. 2.4L

It’s comin soon boss

I wish I had some ideas I just don’t know. We don’t do a any towing with this truck other than a very small utility trailer.
Turbo it, I am installing a turbo on my 2000 4.2 V6. Cheaper than buying a whole new truck.
In the UK we consider 24 degrees very hot
Think he means in Fahrenheit 😅
It's in Fahrenheit that he's talking about. It's -4.5 in Celsius.
Just got this same truck. Real quick question, are you suppose to turn off overdrive when driving this truck???
You can if towing a load. Easier on transmission Ruins fuel economy tho
Is the v6 good for hauling i want to get ond but ik v8s suck on gas but the throttle response and shit is great gonna be hauling heavy wooden logs and have to be 4x4
I’m going insane too 😂

Still have the truck? I work in Cartersville everyday lol

I am no towing expert so I am not sure that sounds pretty heavy?
My mom comes and goes from from Mexico City to the USA on just this engine if that say something about this engine idk what does
It's a 22 gallon tank I have one same color 4.2
Thanks man
I just got and 06 4.2 xl. Will this pull a food trailer?
I think so. You will know it’s back there tho
Good luck 👍
Get better man
How is the beater lexus
Pretty good. I think it’s in Fla right now. Prob about 182k now

Did anybody catch the intro what was that lol :-)
Lol
No-one gives the specifications on the 4.2 V-6
I think I found 200hp
Wrong
We threw two engines in the back of the same truck haha looked cool dropped
Have same truck
Love em
