Very enjoyable sketchbook tour. You and a few other youtube artists have gotten me back into sketching and painting in my middle age. I love your "disaster" page as well as "Jack's Scar" gorge 😊

Hello Mr. B. my old mukka. Loved this video tour of your sketches lots. I know how much your art means to you and how you love to share the good and not so good with folk to encourage them to try themselves, me included, who has never drawn anything to be honest as you know. For folk who do not know Andy personally, he is truly passionate about sharing his knowledge ...good and bad about his artistic talent always. This, I find inspiring. I have not seen many folk love their passion so much that they strive to share it . I must admit Andy, maybe you got your artistic talent from handsome boy Bailey 🐶who added such wonderful tones to your Romaldkirk Moor sketch 😂. Seriously though Mr.B. Inspiring video for sure :)

Thank you Mr Lion. I tend to use stronger colours for the pen and wash sketches as i think they lend themselves to a more graphic approach. Some subjects need a more softer palette. I will look at filming one or two more books.
Thanks Andy, I really enjoyed that. It would indeed be great to see more of your sketchbook work. I love the vibrant greens you use. I admire John Harrison’s work and tutorials too; it was an online demonstration of his that got me into pen and wash during lockdown. I need to be courageous though and try the outdoor approach which your work is encouraging me to aspire to. It’s good that your dog has artistic talent too!
Thank you for the kind comment Mark. I tend to use stronger colours on the pen and wash work as they seem to go so well together. Outdoor work is good fun and even though they all dont work out ( as can be seen in the film) it is a good experience and painting excercise.
Thanks for the kind comment. Sketching outside is a bit restricted at the minute due to lockdown and the weather. However, nothing to stop you getting some practice in and gainign confidence in the comfort of your own home :)
We really enjoyed this Andy and it really adds to the images to hear you explain what was going on at the time. I wouldn’t dream of telling you how to improve them but one sparked a debate between Carol and I and that was the fictitious one with the birds. I said the birds would have been better on the left of the frame flying to the right but Carol thought it was just right as it was. In our photography group we have discussed at times that people have left right preferences but have no idea if that is actually true. You had me wondering how you filmed this one, was it one camera or two ? I am guessing two but not sure as I could see no evidence of how you got that top down view. If you make another of one of your other sketchbooks (and we hope you do) then go even closer on showing the images please as they are so nice to study. Not sure what definition you like to film in but 4K would allow you to punch in without any loss of quality 😁👍. All the best.
Hi Ken and Carol. Thanks for taking the time to watch and to post such an interesting reply. Firstly the sketch of the birds flying. As it was an invented scene the addition of the birds was a last minute consideration. I placed them on the right hand side of the sketch as they "fitted in" with the way the cloud had turned out, the V formation of the geese directs you eye towards the left of the picture taking you into the empty space but if you notice the way the cloud shape is it does the same thing, dropping down from the right side to the left, repeating the shape of the bird formation. In general though in many paintings etc the subject matter (birds, animals etc) can be easier to except if they are coming in from the left and heading to the right as this emulates the way we read. However, it no hard and fast rule, it all depends on what story the artist/photogrpaher it trying to tell. As for filming, well spotted. The first time that I have done it but yes, filmed with two cameras (gopro 5 and a gopro 8) filming simutaneously. The top down camera was supported by an arm on a tripod. I film in 2.7k as I use the linear setting on the Gopros as that doesnt give such a distorted FOV as the wide option. I am pretty sure that you cant film 4k with linear mode.
