    We decided we are going to stop complaining about the Church that we have experienced and start becoming the Church that we dream of.

      Shane is a liberal using christianese, to make his liberal agenda sound like Christianity . . .he never preaches on sin, Hell or repentance . . .I have never her him use the addresses of Bible verses in his sermons...he a nice guy, but he doesn't preach the gospel of salvation...never!!!!!!
      Yes do good works, but, good works will not save you, but if you are saved you will do o good works...
      Shane claims to be a founding member of something he calls new monasticism, many new monastic groups incorporate new age teachings . . . it's made up and not biblically based. . .just because somebody comes across, as a Christian. . .what you mean using Bible terms, for many new monastic groups they have a different understanding of that same word... salvation, born again, repentance, redemption, Hell, holiness... Depending on what new monastic group you're talking to most of these groups have different meanings for the same words Christian use . . .the word new monastic comes from Dietrich Bonhoeffer and he used it in his book " The Cost of Discipleship" what Shane and other New Monastic's have done is commandeered a word and its original contacts was good, but most new monastic groups make it up as they go along... Mixing Catholicism with the teachings of Protestantism and mix it with all sorts of new age teachings . . . If somebody uses the term new monasticism run from them very quickly and read your Bible . . .and know salvation is believe, in the risen Savior alone...you have to repent of your sins, then put your faith in Jesus like you would a parachute if you where going to jump out of an airplane, you can't just look at the parachute you have to put it on, by faith, put on Jesus and you will be saved...John 3:16. . .Hodos!

    This teaching begins with John the Baptist asking, "Are you the one we've been expecting, or should we wait for another?" Jesus answers the question with the shortest testimony he could give by saying to his cousin, John, "what have you seen?" (Obviously, the proof was in the pudding.) The point of the teaching moves on to today, with our culture's problems and conditions and asks, "how can we Christians be to our culture, today, "the proof" or be "healers" or be "LOVERS". This is a simple and short challenge that asks, "how can we live out and show Jesus' "crazy, radical" LOVE here and now by how we live? I know that we want to do it- - we just can't do it alone.

    The story Shane tells here about the occupation of the church by the poor is so relevant to what is currently going on at St Paul's Cathedral in London, over the cathedral's decision to take action against the 99% protest camp on its grounds. Revd Giles Fraser's courageous and self-sacrificing resignation as canon of St Paul's Cathedral two days ago, because of his opposition to a police eviction, is totally in tune with what Shane is saying here. I wonder if they know about each other?

    The central issue of this talk happened in England 30 years ago. The term is 'squatting' where people occupy empty buildings through organising and learn the reality of the system, fight back lawfully and expose the dog appetite and base mentality which invariably uses aggression to forcibly get or keep the pie for itself. Persistence of vision and many battles fought by caring people who put their lives on hold & lived as squatters to help others in need, brought about many changes.

    I am at an old Cemetery looking at the graves. I'm thinking to myself that these people are wherever they're going to be for all eternity. These people have no more hope. They died in their sin or they were saved... we have choices still. How many of these people would made a different choice if they could come back. You and I can still make that right choice. Eternity is waiting. Jesus said he was the Way the Truth and the Life.... outside of Jesus being the Lord of your life there's only hell to pay. These folks in these Graves can't make any more choices, but you can.

    Shane, I hope you read posts that go up here. Great message. I'm with you nearly 100%. I take real issue with only one sentence in your message at 31:50. It's not the reputation of a nation or the gospel that's at stake in the world, it's human lives and suffering.

    Shane is clearly a person who better understands the gospels than many pastors do.
    But trust me, more people long for marriage and sexual relations than are able to find those things. Mother Theresa, Paul and Jesus were all atypical in the extreme.
    There's a very good reason why there have been so many instances of child molestation in the Catholic church: Vows of chastity ask more than a lot of men are able to give without reaching the breaking point.

    It isn't really about anything other than the gaining the perspective that all that we have and all that we are doesn't actually belong to us, we are simply allowed use and stewardship of it all. Once we gain this perspective, it becomes a "no brainer" of what we are to do with what we have stewardship over.

    There are many views on Shane Claiborne and many of them are misinterpretations and misconceptions as well. First and foremost, I sincerely consider him an authentic Christian as He believes that taking the Biblical doctrines literally is necessary for salvation; and believes that a relationship with Jesus Christ is necessary. Shane Claiborne points out how the Bible makes it very clear that demons believe yet aren't obviously saved; and explains the Truth of how claiming just belief in doctrine isn't what saves someone. I clearly even believe in justification by Faith alone and even doing something like committing genocide wouldn't damn an actual believer. But there is a difference between someone who just believes that saying a prayer and pretending to believe in a doctrine is only necessity and another who actually believes that faith demands action even though the greatest believer is still capable of the worst. Secondly, Shane Claiborne points out how Jesus preached a message that would be offensive to most people. Many people don't see such as portraying Jesus into a different person than He was has become so popular within culture and many people claiming to believe in Him tend to see the perspectives of Him which they see as directly affecting themselves. Thirdly, he isn't very political for all issues and makes this clear by admitting the truth of how Jesus was apolitical along with how He demanded a lot from the church rather than the entire population. He is criticizing not the political systems of the world but how selfish motives have overtaken them and doesn't call for their removal or even significant reform. He even points out how some of the greatest atrocities throughout world history have been done by governments rather than individuals and rallies against most major wars which are essentially just government programs. Finally, he points out how Jesus was homeless for most of His life and this is something Jesus openly admits when He declares how the Son of Man doesn't even have a place to lie down. What Shane demands isn't even for us to eradicate and overturn the political system but rather for the church to do more in these situations. The way people have reacted to Shane Claiborne shows how some might take his message very radically but it's not surprising given how he points to how Jesus demands something at a time when painting Jesus as either a wise teacher with some advice and/or an idealistic hippie without power are the popular views of even many of those within the church.

    At about 9:00 in Shane talks about how he thinks it is more important to focus on life on this earth than our life in heaven. This is completely unbiblical. Paul said to live is Christ and die is gain. Our first goal before making this earth the progressive liberal utopia Shane wants is to lead people to Christ. This earthly gospel is not the one Christ preached. Shane is talking about 19th century progressive theology.
    CS Lewis said: "Aim at Heaven and you will get Earth 'thrown in': aim at Earth and you will get neither."

    • @janoudman1963
      @janoudman1963 8 лет назад +2

      +Joshua Childers Jezus came to tell us to drop all religion and start living, be like Christ. When Paul spoke of "die is gain", he meant chosing to live as a christian - your old person dies and a new you is reborn, the new you is actually you as you were meant to be. He wasn't looking to heaven. Because then he'd be no better than the religions around him those days - they all told people to look to heaven and forget the present. Jezus showed us how to focus on this life. Bring salvation to this life. Don't worry nor dream about heaven.Shane is showing us like any prophet of jezus should and would - what it means to be church of christ. If we all follow that is when the prophesy will come out that alle the world will know of him and live that way. That is when heaven is on earth. But just to console - if we take heed of Shane's example of how to be we will experience heaven on earth. I Believe!

    • @joshuachilders6558
      @joshuachilders6558 8 лет назад

      +Jan Oudman John 18:36 Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.” The Christian experiences spiritual joy which can seem like heaven on earth but to say heaven on earth in the way you and Shane describe is not the truth. Mathew 10:22 "and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved"
      Jesus promised that true followers of him would endure persecution. When Shane says people ask "what about this life?" He should tell them Christianity is a difficult life to live and we must endure.
      The beatitudes also teaches ““Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”
      ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:6‬ ‭
      The word blessed here often translated to happy, notice it doesn't say blessed are those who seek happiness, earthy riches, or the earthly kingdom

    • @joshuachilders6558
      @joshuachilders6558 8 лет назад

      +Jan Oudman I am not suggesting that Christ only looked to heaven when he spoke of salvation. This difference is when Shane describes people asking "I am promised life after death but dies Christianity promise life now?"
      What is meant by this, yes we can live more fully when we are saved and are filled with the Holy Spirit. My concern is that these people, based on the context in which Shane is speaking are looking for earthly goods- which is something the bible does not necessarily promise to Christians.

      I'm not a man of faith. I'm a man of logic and reason. It doesn't make since that the Romans would waste their time executing a pacifist rabbi. It does make more sense (from their perspective) to execute a political rebel who called out injustice everywhere he went and even went so far as to lash con artists with a whip and drive them out of his Father's temple.

    Progressive Christianity is an approach to theChristian faith that is influenced by post-liberalism and postmodernism and: proclaims Jesus of Nazareth as Christ, Savior, and Lord; emphasizes the Way and teachings of Jesus, not merely His person; emphasizes God's immanence not merely God's transcendence; leans toward ...
    This is not Christianity...

    I'm a little disappointed that Biola (my school) had this heretical guy speak. He's part of the somewhat heretical group of "Red Letter Christians" who now accept gay marriage as "ok." This group is doomed to failure since it seeks to focus too much on Jesus' "red letters," forgetting the rest of the Bible. I remember another movement that spoke the same way....and it led to Jonestown.
