My granddaughter invited me to an awards show in Hollywood. There were eight people at our table (2 other African Americans), out of the eight people, only this young lady and her friend were pleasant to me. The others didn’t even acknowledge me, I spoke to them, they barely responded. I believe because I’m an older African woman in a room of young “Hollywood” types, apparently I wasn’t their vibe. Ms. Rodriquez and I conversed, I didn’t know who she was, she was not pretentious in the least. Then, after listening to the accomplishments of the next presenter, to my amazement, she was called to the stage. She was a presenter mixed with comedy, she killed it. I am now a super-fan and, needless to say, she was the highlight of my evening.
This is wonderful. I am so glad she made an impact on you. I have never heard of her before but now I'm very, highly interested. She sounds like a well grounded person and I love this about people!!!!

Are you “African American” or are you a “Black American”? I ask because “Africans didn’t start immigrating to the US until 1965. “Black Americans” are a very different group of people from “African Americans”, who only have some Subsaharan African DNA as a commonality.
“African Americans” are immigrants and have a connection to an African country, people/tribe, language(s), etc-Thungs thst Black Americans don’t share. “Black Americans” have more in common with Central Europeans than they do with actual Africans.

Great Interview!--Retired Black Spanish teacher--I always taught my kids about Afro-Latinos and had their pictures on the wall in my classroom.They did not believe Black folks were born in Hispanic countries.I many lesson plans and videos on the Blacks in Hispanic countries.

It was my Spanish teacher from Puerto Rico (Miguel/ God Bless You) who informed me that Puerto Ricans are a mixture of African, Indian, and European/Spain. I later came to understand that many Latin countries have a deep African heritage ( just listen to the music, Africa is written all over it) and many are in denial of it. As for me, I'm Black and I'm proud. And I would not have it any other way, not prejudiced just grateful.
The majority of captured Africans were taken to Latin American and Caribbean countries. Brazil has the largest Black population outside of Africa and is a majority Black country.
So sad , but they are not white so be happy in your own skin. What a confused people full of self hate and in denial , catholic country even the Pope worships a black madona.

My Ex- Lady Friend who was Mexican bragged on her Mexican Culture all the time! Their food, dance and Music! When I bragged to her about my blackness, my Louisiana Culture, my food, she became disgusted and said I was being racist! Hmmm! Black Man being- Racist???! 😂 so we argued and argued that I was being a bigot and racist, so she had us both take a 23&me test! And come to find out I’m 70% ElNegro and she 60% Hispanic with the other being Mongolian from Ghangis Khan tribe which is majority of Mexicans and Central and South Americans. Indigenous Blood is Nubian! Period! It’s melanin based! Learn ya history

I agree with her. My mother is light Puerto Rican, and my dad is black Guatemalan, and I claim afro latina. I was also a child translator to my family. I'm a caramel color with 3c4a hair, and I look mixed. I grew up with powerful black teachers who are strong and beautiful. Shout out to Mrs. Henry my 5th grade teacher. All my teachers growing up in elementary school were all black and as I grew up in the mixed black and Spanish community. I had many black friends. As I got older and getting into the schools where white people were, I was stand offish because I didn't trust white people because of the way they treated my father. I cannot let go of the colonizers who destroyed generations of families with slavery. This topic needs to be out and always spoken about.

especially her distinguishing the difference between her "white" teachers and how her teachers of color became her role model. She was ready to be groomed and accepting the culture. My Black Philly civics teacher told my San Antonio, Texas students that we were weak in culture in our culture and were ignorant of our reality during the bicentennial year and he was so right. I never had one black history course during my public school education.

Yes she was Latina of Mexican and Brazilian nationality- with cameroonian roots from her father that did not show up in he phenotype. Jabar, Aside from the fact that she was lied to about her origins for decades and when she found out about her paternal side and his origins- to which I witnessed , it revealed proved she had African roots through DNA testing- maybe 12% european. My daughter identifies as black as I mentioned the first time( but realized she is the product of three very rich cultures).
But on a separate note. Since you like adjectives of description and fancy yourself in wordplay- semantics, but you seem to not respect the fact my wife; did not play colorist ever, and that I lost the love of my life and best friend of 27 years- I'd advise you to check your emotions before posting your vitriol as a response to something sensitive enough. Maybe you are asking legit questions or perhaps it was an agenda you were pushing through some form of Socriatic questioning- it's kinda hard to tell. Or , perhaps you lack the empathy and capacity to understand what it's like to lose someone. If you do not and cannot- that is unfortunate for you. But if you decide that the nuanced perspective I brought with my original reply, my response is too complex and therefore triggers you and your potentially your fragile ego, you can come visit me in OKC while I am still here and we can see how you feel about me answering your questions about my deceased wife and beautiful daughter in person. Every interview I watch of Aida, I learn so much more about her life and black/ Hispanic history. I love her transparency and her story telling ability comes so natural.
I am a retired teacher of 31 years. I love that you acknowledged teachers. What a fiercely wonderful interview. Aida Rodriguez you are a truly beautiful soul. You are also beautiful physically. You are bringing so much light to a very complicated issue. I too learned from you. I love that you brought out the Israel and Palestine issue. This is worldwide. In India and Japan too. The interviewer asked such purposeful questions. I didn't even intend to watch the entire interview, but it was so riveting. You made so many tremendous points.

My neighbors are Latino. None speak English, but the older woman said “negro” to her Latina daughter that smiled at me and I nodded at her, and right then, I knew I was dealing with a racist. 🤦🏿 Some Latino folk are hard racists and think Black people are bad. They need to be educated. Thank God for Ms. Rodriguez. She’s a real one.
Sounds like you got a complex if you can't even hear the word black in another language. This is why I don't befriend black Americans, not worth the trouble...
All regions all countries have racist unfortunately. even blacks can be racist just look at how they treating Caitlyn Clark she is minority in WNBA because blacks dominate sports.
I LOVE the intelligence of this sister! As an African-American in the midwest , I encounter a lot of what feels like hostility from Hispanic people. I am well aware of the kindred relationship that exists between Africans and indigenous peoples of the Americas, and I have always felt it ashame that there's not more of a connection.
We Africans, Hispanics, Asians and Arabs are all a part of what I call the Sun Races, and we are all kindreds in the family of races. And if we proceed from that mindset, I feel life can be a lot better for all of us.
Aida Rodriguez has a beautiful spirit. She gives an earful experiences that should be written in a book. As a native of Miami FL. She is 💯 on the Spain aspect, the colorism in the Spanish community is real & global.
Yeah I can’t wait for next year to tell their minds the meaning between white and black skin. The doll test, one is superior and one is inferior. One is better and one just isn’t, not my words but science facts. So having light skin or light eyes only means your sick because you lack a certain component that makes you a full human. Remember, the dark you are the better you are , the lighter you are well, you need more vitamins and nutrients.

This was a great interview. I also recently watched her HBO Comedy Special. I respect her brutal honesty about racism in the Latino Community that seriously needs to be discussed on a regular basis.
It truly doesn't nothing will change ignorant minds...their hate and racism is just as real as the white racism towards us..we will focus on us and us only.
My husband and I our 1st date was in Fort Worth, Tx 8 yrs ago. We saw Aida Rodriquez at the Hyena Comedy Club. After the show she greeted everyone on their way out. Her performance was Stellar we laughed our butts off. She shook my hand and told me that I was so beautiful. I love when women are confident enough to genuinely compliment another woman. ❤❤❤
This is my first encounter/experience of Aida Rodriguez. This interview is a gift in my life! I am so grateful to her soul and spirit because she loves us for real!!!! I love discovering people who share my ideologies and confidence to speak the truth about race relations. She contributes to the barrier breakers within the black and brown community. I agree with you Sharita l love her too. This is my first time hearing about her. I must say she's rare in the latino community. You have many Latinos that do not acknowledge they have black in there lineage. Slavery wasn't just in the U.S it was also in Latin America.

This is the reason why Hispanic's shouldn't be using the "n-word". Comedy Hype needs to cover that and call people out because it's really disrespectful.
What she's saying is that there is like in the black community hate and jealousy.
Black people come in a myriad of shades like they do, and some think the lighter skinned are better. This is something we need to fix in our own community.
Telling them not to use the n word would be like telling light skinned black people not to use the word.

But Latinos and Afro-Latinos are not "Black" (ADOS) they are or have bloodline that comes from the Spanish/Latin speaking countries within the Caribbeans with a possible mixture of bloodline from Spain, Native Indigenist, and or South America. Doesn't matter that their bloodline also comes from slaves from Africa during the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
ADOS and even people from Africa (even if they are living in Canada or European countries) demand people with dark skin to relate to their thinking of "Blackness", when even ADOS and Africans can't relate.

I will never forget my mom saying “Rosalie make sure you marry a white man”. I was so confused. But I understood as I got older what was behind that. Being a black PR I was so confused and never felt like I belonged. I married a black man cause that is what I was always attracted to. My abuela and aunts and uncles were white PR but my mom was Afro Latina and she definitely treated differently. 😩
Wow.. Im from Cali but been living in the DR and now work in PR.. Dominicans have told me that having white babies is considered to be cleaning up the race or cleaning up the Island. Thats crazy and confusing. Living in the DR, i can see how dominant white supremacy has been in the DR and it also opens my eyes to how the Brothas back home have been screwed over by white supremacy.

Wow! I already loved Aida Rodriguez for her comedy. She’s funny AF. But now I LOVE her perspective on race and cultural issues as well. She’s just AMAZING!
It's very rare for Latinos to claim any part of Blk. Even if there are Blk family members in their lineage. I knew some like that in grade school. They would cuss a person out for calling them "Blk". And they'd be like she said, the shade of a Whoopi Goldberg for example. Some of the kids when I was young used to say: "nobody wants to be Blk'. As IF being Blk was a nasty dirty thing to be. I never felt that way. Thank goodness for my proud Blk family instilling Pride in me I guess is why. I was always proud to be Blk. Never wanted to be Wht or Hispanic. And I always hated how the Hispanics always thought that they were better than us.

I dated a Jamaican female while stationed in Germany. we once had a disagreement, and she stated that she should have gotten involved with a White American, like her grandmother told her as opposed to me. After that statement, I ended the relationship .
Best thing that happened to you..her grandmother and herself have unfortunately slave mentality and stockholm syndrome..they will always see white as God while white sees them and us as all deragatory words.

I grew up in the Bronx with Puerto Rican afro Latinas, who became my family.
When I moved to Harlem and went to the Dominican community, I could not understand them not liking me. They disliked me so much that they wouldn't even take my money. I couldn't even buy anything from them in their stores. It took me a while to realize that they weren't going to serve me.
Went home and told one of my friends and she said, "Oh they don't like you." Couldn't believe my ears.
Having said the above I have had Dominican associates.
May you continue to have the strength to bring awareness to our communities.

But at the end of the day, Hispanics are not Black/ADOS. The white ones and the black women are of their own culture. You can have a pitch black Cuban or Dominican male standing next to or in the company of an ADOS male, and if they were referred to be black or ADOS you better hope it was spoken while they were in a good mood, because they find that offensive, and will correct you on the spot.
Doesn't matter if a person has one parent who is ADOS and one parent Latino, depending on the time of day, that person will claim "Black", "Latino" or "Afro-Latino" depending on the favorable wind that is blowing.
Not understanding why all of these late year Gen x'ers, Millennials and Gen Z's, notably the ones out of NYC can't wrap their heads around that, when for me coming up in Brooklyn from 1965-1983, we all understood and accepted it the way it was when dealing with Latinos. Date and mate with Latinos but understand brace oneself for the friction.

And the so-called "Black" people aren't "Black" either. These ethnic labels are a European construct.
The melanated Latinx is of African descent, and if we're going to give them a title, it would be Afro-Latino.
If you haven't already done so, take a look at "Black in Latin America," and you'll see how Latin countries were brainwashed by the aristocracy to remove their "African" heritage.
Is all a part of colonization and divide and conquer.
The "Black" person is the most hated ethnic group on the planet, especially and particularly the African American.
We must also remember there is only one race, and that is the human race, which all began in what we now call Africa.
My Puerto Rican sistah/girlfriend said, "I know I'm Black. It's all about where the boat left us off." And the U.S. decided to put "White" as her ethnicity on her birth certificate.

People are late catching on to Aida. Better late than never I guess, but she's always spoke the truth. Discovered her back in like 2014 I think.
As an individual who is mixed and proud. Will never choose one race over the other. I came from a beautiful diverse family in race and religion. And I am part of that.

I also identify as Afro Latina. I grew up with racism from lighter skin Puerto Ricans towards my dark skinned Puerto Rican mother. My father was a light skinned Puerto Rican who "was more accepted" within the culture. I still have to educate ignorant Puerto Ricans about our culture to this day!!!
