It was a pleasure to have my friend Sierra Ferrell ( @sierraelizabethferrell ) pass through Laramie for a recent Western AF shoot. If you haven’t listened to Ms. Ferrell’s music before, you’re late and you’re lucky to get to hear it for the first time.
And many thanks to the Laramie Train Depot for letting us film there.

Thanks so much for having me! It was a pleasure
My daughter (16mnths) and I listen to you everyday:) love your stuff
your style is so refreshingly new yet old at the same time, cheers!
Take over Nashville already plz
See you soon in Des Moines!
I'm fuckin mesmerized...
She sings like a country star from 75 years ago. Absolutely timeless
it sounds like it should be coming through a gramophone
i COULD SPEND THE REST OF MY DAY LISTENING TO HER
Very true but she adds modern to it somehow. I can't really say which part sounds fresh, but it does
@@Junkmailcrusades Yep - she hash the schpeech impediment thing going on that so many young shingers are youshing. Amazhing voish though.
The sound production is part of this result. Impressive job for both.
How on earth was this not a #1 chart topping hit in country music ?!?!? She has the purest vintage country voice out there. My guess is she wants to do things her way and be true to herself and her sound and not conform to what big major record labels want her to do . She is on the verge of a grammy I just know it ! Keep doing you Sierra we love it and are here for it .
because the popular music industry is an image driven industry now. this woman is clearly a true artist and the demand and supply has been 💩 for so long now that "that" is what people think is the goods. Sierra will get there because real music lovers will get her there
No idea
It's because it's not tractor rap or boy band music.
She is the siren old sailors would speak of. A building could be during down and her voice would still lead me inside
It cracks me up... I am a big metalhead, but this young lady's voice has me.
Good to listen to more than one genre
Listen to Billy Strings if you haven't. He used to be in a metal band
Same here brother
100% same here
@@mitchellthurner5980 Billy Strings, Marcus King, Colter Wall, Shakey Graves all great.
This is the Sierra I love.
Her album missed out on this feeling. Hope she gets a producer that understands that on the next one.
That is right...love her ole time too. It's coming. Long time coming. Just blown away and so smitten in Colorado
Facts!!!
Yeah this girl has to be live.
yup
it's radio... it's bands... they did the same to Tyler Childress... Country is a phoenix...
I can see myself listening to her 30 years from now; her writing is timeless.
She’s a legend from meow on
Every time she makes eye contact with the camera it sets my heart ablaze
Is your heart located in your penis?
I wish her album was more like this than it is. She’s just so much better without a lot of production behind her.
I feel the same way about a lot of artists lately. "Unplugged" versions so much better than the produced albums
100% agree!! her album was a let down, because it was way way wayyyy over produced and engineered. I wish she would just do it over with a different studio. she is amazing in these videos where its just her with a camera and a few microphones.
Well lucky us, we get both! As long as she is happy with her album then I am STOKED for her. I think her Album is an incredible piece of art.
Yes, we've covered this in earlier releases and it's true, but she is an artist and whatever she creates we can only be inspired by it. She's an original. Even with too much or too little she is art, and always worth our attention.
The album is amazing, she's also great like this. I don't think the album is over produced at all.
Although I like album version, she is SOOOOO good stripped down to just her voice and that guitar. Her phrasing is just so special when she can play with it a little bit.
Couldn't agree more. Her voice fills any space she is in and just carries on and on. She does not require any accompaniment whatsoever.
Just saw her last week. She had a fiddle,
mandolin, and bass with her. Most people were there to see Shakey Graves but they were fans by the time she was done.
It’s the way I prefer her performances. Her, her guitar, and that perfect melodious powerhouse of a voice. That’s all I need or want.
Agree 100%.
Just her voice, guitar and outfit
Damn those eyes have alot of stories, and that voice is absolutely amazing.
Hey Western AF, so I speak on behalf of everyone when I say we need that rendition of The Garden. DO IT!!!!!!
Came here just to comment the same thing. Where is it damnit! I needs it.
Yes, do it! Digging the vibe, sounds like it'd be in a True Detective soundtrack.
here here! please release that amazing little diddy!
!!!!
I feel like colter wall would sound really good singing with her
That would be like a modern day June Carter and Johnny Cash duet. Their voices would compliment each other perfectly.
@@livingminimumwage6359 that is exactly my thought. His lower tone and her higher pitch would contrast perfectly.
no i think you are off base here
100%
Oh man! THIS HAS TO HAPPEN!
My mom passed away in '04 and Sierra looks exactly like her. When she locks eyes with the camera, it's like I'm looking directly at my mom. The world is an eerie place.
maybe you are related??
Your mom was realllllly pretty
Eyes I believe described as “dole” - expressionless
Like in old pictures.
@@grahamproctor9880 agreed
What's even eerie is that I thought exactly the same thing. Sierra is a dead ringer for my mom when she was a young woman
Just dreamy...
By sweet chance of algorithm I was lead here. This is easily going to be a daily listen for me. Sierra. You're a fucking DAWG.
Her voice give as me goosebumps and homesickness for a place and time I've never been.
Maybe you have....
Thanks for putting my feelings into words!
Hiraeth...
She makes me pine for WV. I listen to her, And I feel like I need to move back to the Appalachians.
1000 percent agree and feel that.
I’m a simple man. I see Sierra. I click. I enjoy
I can neither confirm, nor deny that I was crying
What a beautiful voice.
stunning voice, one singer who is 100% better live
That seems to be a trend with most of the people on this channel, I fall in love with a performance of theirs and find it on Spotify and it's almost a different song
Saw her live last week, so I can confirm this is true
The record is great, and she's amazing live.
@@tomwatson6560 Agreed. Same with gemsonvhs
Please. I beg of you. Post the full video of her covering Tim Obrien’s “The Garden”
I know right!!!!
Ive looked for it and ain't seen it nowheres
It’s haunting and I need it!!!
YES!!!! Must hear this!!!!!!!!!
I 100% agree, it needs to be out for the public.
is this the song featured at the end?
Add a fiddle and this is pure gold.
Why can’t the record producers capture this sound on her albums? These live recordings sound 1000x better than the records…
if i had the chance, i could.
Because all music is over produced for the last 50 or more years. Often I find myself liking the first recording of an artist. When that has success the figure “the wall of sound” will be more of a commercial success. Revolting
It's been like this for years. Willie Nelson's carreer was made off of live records
Sadly the same with even Samantha Fish.
I haven't heard her albums yet, but this is not a "live" recording. The audio was recorded separate and she's lip syncing for the video production.
The natural reverb of that room is incredible
This would be great in any decade of country music history. 50 years from now, people will play this video, and it will still be great.
This is bluegrass not country!!
Wow. This is amazing. That reverb makes her voice go on forever. If I close my eyes, I can hear this out of a radio in the radioactive desert of a Fallout game.
She's doing old school country with her own twist. Fallout mostly did doo-wop and never did country as far as I know. Just appreciate her voice going on forever. No need to compare it to other stuff.
Comparative thinking is what we do as a species! Anyway, what I should have said was "The sound of this is like a song I would expect to hear wafting across the radioactive deserts after emerging from Vault 101 from a far-off, half broken and full of sand radio"
@@jimbobruno4257 From memory there were a few borderline country songs.
Mesmerizing, that voice and that woman.
This woman’s strategy: make the audience fall in love with her.
Good job. It’s workin
So fantastic. Her phrasing and attitude remind me a lot of Johnny Cash, actually. Great writer and singer, and I adore her voice.
I had to look it up to verify that she actually wrote that...sounds like it is straight from the 1950s but you're right, she (co-)wrote it! Impressive!
YES! Cash is my fav artist ever and she has a lot in common with him. They both draw in the camera, have a cheeky wry smile and emphasise certain words and tones.
She really is one of the new greats. She’s up there for me with George, Patsy, Eddie Arnold & Marty Robbins. Amazing songwriting that’s simple but so catchy and actually memorable. Plus her voice is too good for words. I really love this girl, I’m so glad I get to witness her career soar in real time. Effortlessly talented!
Seriously add her cover of the garden by Tim O’Brien. Please. So hauntingly beautiful.
I've been looking for over a week for it with no luck
I need this in my life
YASSSS !
I also looked for an HR and can't find it.
Agreed that echo in the room just adds to it.
When I first started playing acoustic guitar and singing I told my cousin I needed a mic. He replied with “No you don’t, singing is about controlling your volume, too many musicians talk into a mic and then rely on the studio for volume control. A true guitarist will not need a mic to be heard over their guitar.” She nails everything about this, so damn well.
I'm confused by this comment. You see that she's wearing a mic, right? I don't mean to be a troll; I just want to point out to new musicians that this sound balance is not natural. It is the work of a quality technician and a soundboard.
Yes she is wearing a mic, and I agree with there being obviously a technician and a soundboard but what I’m trying to point out exactly it the fact she is only really playing the root notes loud, strumming quietly when she has to lower her voice to hit notes. It’s a very hard technique to master even for veteran musicians. You tend to lean either to guitar or vocals but I think shes found a very happy common ground between those two skills. And I don’t think you’re a troll, very valid comment.
that kind of thinking only applies in small quiet settings. Also some people just have quiet voices but are great singers. Sounds like cuzzo needs to learn a few more lessons before laying down the law
Been a fan for many years, She is one of a kind and beautiful.
thank you :)
@@SierraFerrell
I'm a new fan. Seen her in Bozeman Mt. Loved her. Great show! Super talented and just generally lovely.
Beautiful in so many ways
Her voice is So beautiful
She and Billy Strings give me hope for “old soul” music.
I am hooked, this voice!!!
This song literally brings tears to my eyes
I need the full version of that song at the end , she s so talented; acoustic versions are always my favourites !
Same!!!
let me know when you ll find it please)
Was just thinking the same. Is it in her album?

His is nice but I would like her full
Cover
That song at the last 20ish seconds is enchanting! I’d love to hear all of that too!
do we know what the song is?
It's called "the garden" by Tim O'Brien.
The only kind of country music that could save country music
Wow. This is shockingly good.
God, I love her so much. So beautiful, amazing voice and cadence. So good.
Wow. This is my first time hearing her. Simultaneously the best country song writing and country voice I’ve heard in ages.
Yep. She's a GEM.
i love how calm she is and how she moves when she sings, its really calming and elegant
You are so incredibly awesome, Sierra.
Those inflections she's experimenting with are on a whole new level...
I NEED to hear the full version of those last 15 seconds!
Me too - I was shook can’t wait to hear full version - fab teaser
Oh my! Gotta hear more! I'm such a fan. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, melodies and voice with us!
It's a Tim O'Brien song but obviously she'd do a phenomenal version based on those few seconds at the end!
@@julieh4481 look up "The Garden" by Tim O'Brien
@@vargkvinnan She sounded fantastic singing that from the little bit we got but the original I just found is amazing too!
This was ...... timeless perfection.
I desperately want to hear her version of The Garden. Thanks for the tease!
Love her old country sound and those fantastic pipes, surely honed by singing over banjos, washboards, dronks, and train whistles.
Incredible voice, she is an incredible Musician❤️ This is an artist that should be number 1 on every chart
Highly talented, knows her history and shes beautiful. 💯
Oh my word. I LOVE her classic county sound. Taking me to old dirt roads in an out of the way old town. Dadgum
Her voice alone is a treasure.
Goddang she is so incredible
You're an old soul Sierra. A wonderful old soul
Damn she has some pipes. That is an old school sound that takes me back to my teens and I love it
I like the simplicity of just her and guitar
For all those bemoaning the production on her album vs. the stripped down acoustics of this version, I say why fuss, we get to have it all. That's the beauty of how many different ways we can see her performing her songs through this ol' internetty thing. I've been surfing Sierra Ferrel song versions all week, and what a pleasure it's been.
I rather have this on the album in high quality playing on my sound system than what you get now, listening on YT with its low quality on the computer. So no, we don't get the best of both worlds. Both versions on an album with high quality sound would make it so.
She is stunning from her voice to her music to her style.. love this..
There is something beautifully haunting about the natural reverb that hall makes. I’m not a big fan of revival but this is some of the best music happening right now!
Absolutely mesmerizing. How you can get better is amazing.
Yup ! This one and Jeremiah are pure gems !!!
Recently discovered Sierra. I've fallen in love with her music. Very talented gal! ❤️
Im not a modern country fan and this speaks to me (because it isn't modern country). I would buy songs like this, great song and singing.
Western AF is now officially my most favourite RUclips channel and Sierra Ferell and Benjamin Tod are more and more my most favourite artists
Her album is beautiful but I love her acoustic so much more. Her voice is one of a kind.
Undeniable charisma, talent, charm, and beauty! Thank you for doing what you do Sierra!!
Lord this woman can sing
The way she subtlely breaks the 4th wall with her performance is so powerful
The world needs this music!
Oh man it makes me so happy how good she's doing. 🥰😍
Thanks so much for doin what you do, Sierra!! I'm 47 and have loved your music/style/songwriting/picking/voice from the heavens for a few years now, but I'm so stoked that there's some little girls/teens who are getting introduced to classic country through your carrying the torch like no one else has been able to do in decades...Thanks for sharing your gift and thanks Western AF for these amazing recordings of her! Y'all are the best!!!
I NEEEEED that version of The Garden
Just a thanks from those you helped bot feel so alone in this.
Sierra is the real deal. Outstanding!
Nailing the voice for this kind of music!! Love this.
insane precision and spontaneity... she makes it look so so easy and it is NOT. amazing
Sierra, Sierra, Sierra!...... You rang some bells for sure. Nice pickin..
She's incredible. Love it, Sierra.
I learned of Sierra Ferrel from two women for whom I play mandolin when they sing at the local hangout. I am beginning to think that SF is a really amazing unrecognized talent, seemingly simple in style but finely crafting songs not connected to any particular era yet free of frills or gimmicry
everyday, I gotta hear a sierra ferrell song.
Beautiful song and performance!
She took me back in time. Her voice is absolutely beautiful ❤
She’s an Angel sent to sooth the savage beast.
So much natural talent.
Beautiful!
she keeps looking at the camera like that and im gonna melt
So bona fide, the album has been played everyday at my house. Wonderful work 🖤
I swear I have been searching for your sound for YEARS. Absolutely amazing ❤️
I love discovering new music purely by accident. What an amazing artist.
Stunning! The vocals to the scale work to the tattoos & piercings! I've been telling everyone about this Great Artist!
As many, many others have said, I need to hear the rest of the song at the end! The original is beautiful, but her voice makes it haunting
Excelente. Desde Uruguay. Saludos Raul Tornin
The sound on this os amazing that echo sound is amazing
Real music is coming back. This is it.
I swear 1,000 of these views belong to me alone.
You not alone !
Insanely talented. This exact live take brings me to tears. Her voice is what country folk has been waiting for since Dolly.
I'm in love😮
Best version yet! You go girl!!
