This is a strange device in that it has come and gone in several countries, is kind of “off the grid” when it comes to details (how big an SD card, camera lens and sensor size, power consumption, image dynamic range etc) You’d think with an aftermarket gadget this pricey the Audi nerds would be all about describing the details...not! Still some of those questions to be answered, but for now, at least in Canada, its available to be installed. I was the first one installed by my dealer (explaining the bad estimate of time required, they didnt charge me of course for that). Good luck with it!
Audi's awkwardly named UTR or Universal Traffic Recorder (super nerdy and not correct, it records shaking and movement as well). This amazing device is not just a dashcam but packs a GPS unit, motion sensor, and radar scanner into a stealthy, removable doodad connected to Audi's free phone app. It can be retrofitted into older and many models of Audis, continuously powers front and rear facing surveillance recorders, and is simple to use. This tech has been bobbing around Audi for a couple of years but has not been widely released due to privacy and security reasons. It just became available in Canada. This video reviews its installation, performance, app, and who should consider it. This is the video you HAVE to watch if you are thinking of getting this device!
@@moranz82 Audi is everywhere. Should be available as part of the accessories they sell. Only through dealerships though, I wouldn’t let a third party garage mess with so many parts that is needed to install it, you want to go back to the dealer if something goes wrong or is broken.
I'm in the process of having UTR installed in my 2019 etron. I appreciate your video, and showing what the app does. I agree many features are duplicated (like GPS) and those make the most sense on older non-connected models. However, I find the cost is worth it because I didn't have to remove any panels. Unlike the previous dash cams, this one has an app that lets you pull the video off instead of taking out the card. And the dual cameras is what really sold me on it. Seeing the parking functions is quite similar to the Tesla sentry mode, which is a bonus I wasn't expecting. I'm eager to get my UTR installed, the wrong cable was ordered and we're just waiting for the correct one to wire it in. Also, .avi files are native to Windows, I know you're a Mac guy but most of us have Windows. I'm surprised QuickTime didn't convert it, as .avi is not an unknown or unusual format and I recall QT converting .avi videos off my stand alone camera back in the day when I was still a member of the cult of Mac.
Great video. You ended with “the best product out there.” Have you tried other dash cams? If I had the disposable income for the UTR+installation, would you say that this is the product that I must have over, let’s say, the $200 Owl cam with self installation?
I didnt look at every dashcam, there are many and already well reviewed in the media and youtube. Personally I thought the recorder would be less visually obstructive (probably no worse than any other dashcam out there, and most dont have a rear camera integrated into it) I didnt realize the amount of GPS and motion tech in it added SO much to its price, and maybe not needed for everyone. And the app and access to the files is pretty awkward to quickly use. Its really meant to record major accidents or vandalism and pull off those recent files. Not so much a travelogue trip recorder. Would I recommend it after all that? No. Too invasive to install, too limited in use and way too expensive. Thanks for your comments and glad you enjoyed the video.

Do you know how I can save the rear camera footage onto my Mac. I’ve tried everything and cant figure it out. It’s driving me crazy. I can view the rear footage in VLC but don’t know how to save it.
I havent tried this for a long time (8 months last time I looked at a file!) but from what I recall I had to specifically download the rear cam footage to my iPhone through the app, and then transfer that file to my Mac through Airdrop, then convert it through iSkysoft software into a viewable .mov file. Awkward. I don't remember being actually able to pull the rear cam files directly off the microSD card like you can the front facing camera. Hopefully someone who knows a better way comments on this thread but give that a try.

If you had the opportunity to do it over again, would you purchase this front/rear camera again or look elsewhere? I’d like to have footage if ever in an accident and wonder if you think this would be the best one for that purpose.
I think it would do a good job of recording the accident/vandalism/parking lot damage etc. But...Its the daily stuff of revisiting a nice trip or looking for an old video clip that this unit does badly. Also, the installation required a lot of wire pulling and panels, headliners etc disassembly. I’m hoping that I dont hear a lot of squeaking and rattling in the future because of all that. The fact the app isn’t that great after two years of opportunity to improve it, and the cost to buy and install is crazy high, nope I wouldn’t do it again.
Sorry I missed your comment Chris. I would not do this camera again, too much money for unneeded stuff. I'm sure there are simpler clean looking units for less bother.
Audi UTR Viewer can be downloaded on a PC. Easy to use. I altered rear camera angle by trial and error. Haven't mastered iphone side yet!

I just save the whole file (front and rear) and view which ever I want to via VLC.
