  • Here are few tips/observations that I have seen in the past few years of having baby gouldian chicks molt into their adult feathers.

    John
    Most of my young take between 5 and 7 months but I had 3 male's which took 11 month's. Now they are beautiful birds.

    This is the first time I am keeping gouldians. I have had several other species of birds in the past, but never gouldians. I got a pair of white breasted gouldians, and then another female that's a blueback. I then got to buy 3 young gouldians that had not molted out, but are 2 males and one female, so that I can now pair them up later to be 3 pairs. The parents were both purple breasted, one black head one red head. Both the males have gotten a read head but their breast is completely white, to my surprise. The female is still late in the molt but her breast is turning purple and it looks like she will be blackheaded. I had hoped for some more purplebreasted black headed ones, but they are all beautiful of course. Always interesting to see their molting process is so different from bird to bird :)

    My Baby gouldian molted in 5 month only. Some start molting early in around 4 month.
    And I noticed white beast molted quickly.

    Great video and info.
    I have just got my first 2 gouldians. One I was told is a male, his breast color is clearly divided in his later stages of molt.
    The other is in the initial stages and was told cannot be sexed right now. Are there any indications as to sexing young gouldians?

      The males will sing before they molt into their adult feathers so if it is singing then it is definitely a male.

    Chris, I noticed you have a couple clutches of babies in the colony. Are you concerned they will breed with each other and if so when do you separate them? Do I need to separate fledglings from the parents when feeding on their own or can they stay becoming part of the colony?

    Thank you for posting this video. Very interesting and helpful. I found your video while searching for information about diets for Gouldian finches. Currently I have a cock and hen who have had their first clutch. The babies have been out of the nest for 3 weeks. They are eating seed, but also, the father is still feeding them when they beg. I do not plan to breed the pair again. I have removed the nest. I am confused about what I should feed them, and when. At what point should I change their diet? And what should I feed them?

    I recently purchased 3 gouldians at 5 months old and they don't have any adult feathers yet, 4-7 months doesn't sound likely for mine unless the shop lied to me about their age or they were super stressed. They look happy now but refuse to eat their seed, fruits, and veggies. They only eat millet for some reason

      Gouldians can prolong their molts due to stress. Give them a few months and they should start to molt for you.

      I recommend adding some millet on top of their food and veggies to get them eating it :)

    After the molt how soon do you breed them?

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  4 года назад

      Gouldians should not be bred until they are around 12 months old to make sure they are fully mature and don't have issues while breeding.

    Do you have any that develop slightly overgrown top beaks? If so do you do anything with these eg. Trim. Etc

    • @birdnerd
      @birdnerd  6 лет назад +1

      Yes I have in the past, You can trim their beaks so that they are the right size. Many times if you have a cuttle bone present at all times they will chew on them and that helps to condition their beaks as well.

      Some molt quickly and others take a little more time to molt.
