Thanks for the video, Chris as always appreciated. However, just looking at different approaches and watched the one with Tom Watson where he suggested that the backswing was more out rather than shallow which allows you to cut across the ball is differ from yours.?
This is a shot I can hit consistently well. I keep my back foot a normal chipping distance away then angle my front leg out to about the same angle I've go the club on. It's good to practice this one in the driving range on the mats because there's no getting around the fact this shot is harder to play on a tight lie, although sometimes necessary.
Love it. These practical tips are worth 50 times more than backswing thoughts etc. you can put this into use straight away. Your similar video about bunkers has transformed my sand play. Thanks Chris
You should put a caveat in the video about not trying a lob shot from 60 yards out. I may have played the perfect lob shot... except for the distance I was expecting to hit it! haha
Very good video and love the channel. I think it would of also been very informative to note the lie of the golf ball before playing a flop. Generally, playing a flop from a buried lie or extremely fluffy lie becomes even that much more dangerous and would tend to lean the player to playing more of the first shot you discussed...chip it on and let it roll out. Just a thought. Thanks.
Hi John, thanks for the comments, your right the lie does make a huge difference to the shot you can play, should really have covered this more closely.
I swear if I did the shot the ball would land on a green at The Forest of Arden. I was amazed how full your swing was but the ball travelled such short distance. I need to practice, practice, practice.
Thanks for commenting, your certainly not alone there, and that success rate is not uncommon. Controlling the clubs low point is certainly a skill which we all as golfers need to develop and improve upon. That knowledge however is valuable as you know only to attempt that shot it you really have to and/or have room past the pin. Keep practicing and I'm sure it will continue to improve. Thanks again.
Mark Butterfield Sounds like you miss a lot of greens. That's not a thing most golfers would be proud of. You might find your time better spent practicing than bragging on RUclips..
Good stuff. My question is what do you do in that same situation if the ball isn't sitting up well or if you're on the fence about whether you can pull the shot off because of the mediocre lie? Thanks!
The reason I asked is because I have hit fat shots trying to lob it out of a mediocre lie and left the ball 2-3 feet short of the fringe. This left me with an even trickier 2nd chip/lob shot when short sided. Thanks
Adam Denison You are always better off playing a shot you have more confidence in. Save this shot for the practice area until you find more confidence in it
@chrisryangolf I'm finding it difficult to get the desired spin even off fairway, I'm wondering do you think that my wedges are the problem(sm4 vokeys)
Hi Paul, yeah can be tricky to generate spin from such close range without much speed. The wedges you have are of high quality, but would depend on wear and tear
"You want the feeling that the hands are going to stop at the front leg as the clubhead continues" ..he says as his hands pass his shoulders on follow through.
@@SteveMe21685 Steve M Actually no I watched the entire video, then replayed the actual shot... where he took almost a FULL swing. Complete opposite of what I was expecting after his description. So the moral of the story... lay the face open, lower the handle, flatten the swing....then take a full damn swing while flipping the head past the hands at contact. If you had heard only the audio and you tried to lob it 10 feet you wouldn't get it past 2 feet by stopping your hands at the front leg. The video is the lesson. Sorry if he's your brother or uncle, but that's what he said and did.
LightningDogg the entire premise of the video is should he play a short little pitch shot or open the face up and take that risky full swing flop shot that everyone is nervous about taking...at no point does he ever say do not take a full swing. I’m not even a subscriber of this channel it’s the first video I’ve even seen of his...good luck with the game buddy
Hi Chris, I am a little confused because other professional teachers teach that for lob or flop shots, you need a steeper angle of attack for increased elevation not a shallower angle of attack as you suggest and this (steeper angle of attack) is accomplished by taking a skightly more open stance much like for a greenside bunker shot. The steeper the angle of attack, the higher the ball flies just like irons that have a steeper angle of attack versus a driver that has a shallower angle of attack. Using a lob wedge with a shallow angle of attack dramatically increases the propspects of sculling the ball- a too often unfortunate result for me when trying to lob or flop a shot. Bset harold
Hi Harold, thanks for commenting, the shallow the approach the higher the shot will go. This is why when you see food golfers play bunker shots or flop shots they stand further away, lower the handle to help create this. We are as you say steeper with the irons and shallower with the driver and this is why a 6 iron can launch at the same angle as the driver.
just a humble suggestion: could you please start your videos with content and put the commercials to the end. I believe that's the common standard in the youtube golf community and much less annoying.
ChrisRyanGolf you always introduce yourself first and then go on with your instagram, twitter etc accounts. in most youtube productions the content comes first (eg the reason why we are watching) and this information is put to to end. that also has the advantage that you can also display it longer. just check Mark Crossfield, Rick Shields, you name it. your content is good, so people will follow you, there is no need to "overdo" it. just my opinion of course but I can back it up with observations I made over the years :) enjoy your game, I wish I could play like you.
Haha, sounds like you have that shot down then Mark, but you have just admitted to RUclips that you missed 9 greens on the short side, maybe some searches for course strategy may help!
Thinned it and I launched the ball 60 yards over the green
Happened to me today 🤣

Where would the weight be on your feet. Middle or towards your left leg?

haha. "a little bit of practice he sez". like maybe a few hundred hours on that shot to nail it. dam game is hard!
great vid, thank you.
Thanks Gary
Great video Chris! I love that shot but can only produce it 50% of the time. The other 50% I skull the ball and send it smoking across the green 😂😂😂

cos your rubbish..I play of 17 and use it a lot of the time...easyist shot in golf when u any good

Chris, like always well explained video. My question is if it's possible to show a lob shot from the fairway over a bunker from about 20 yards
Hi Michael, thanks for your comments, will certainly try and film this shortly

Great explanation of the flop shot Chris thankyou I got alot out of it
The issue I have is summoning up the courage to hit it hard enough!
Hi Robert, your not alone there! Can only suggest more practice to gain more confidence before taking it to the course.
just stay committed just like a bunker shot
What are differences between:
1. Lob and flop
2. Lob and short, short pitch
3. Flop and short, short pitch etc.
1) nothing. 2) lob is lob, short pitch is just that. a pitch. 3) see 1.
If I try to do this, I hit the ball on the top and goes like a land-land missil to the next green.
Don't you love when you hit blade to face and the ball fkn rockets 50 yards off the fairway haha... Make sure you get underneath it!
Warn your buddies on the other side of the green before attempting this one 😂
I fucking love my lob wedge, such a fun club
perfect!
Thanks
Call me Lobert Stack because hitting a lob is an unsolved mystery to me it’s so hard.
Unless there's an obstacle to get over, why not just hit an easy bump a run?
"You want the feeling that the hands are going to stop at the front leg as the clubhead continues" ..he says as his hands pass his shoulders on follow through.
“You want to fell ALMOST as if.......in reality that will not actually happen” what did you stop listening to type that?

could have just chipped it and not over compacted it 😁
