Today, I cover if "SWISS MADE" in watches matters. Also, I cover what is Swiss Made vs Swiss Movement.
In luxury watches, now there are manufactures from all over the world that produce high quality watches. Because of labor and production costs in parts of the world; some of these watches can be considered affordable compared to the past. With the changes in Swiss regulation and their requirements, watch brands and watch manufactures can take advantage of certain techniques to maintain the Swiss heritage while driving costs of watches down.
Further, some great watch brands are coming from countries outside of Switzerland. For example, we have Seiko and Grand Seiko. Additionally there is A. Lange & Söhne and Nomos from Germany. Let's not forget several USA-based watch brands that at least partially produce their watches in the United States.
In this video, I cover these questions as well as provide insight as a watch dealer and someone in the industry that handles and works with many watches, brands, and companies.
Something to keep in mind is that many brands such as Rolex, Patek, Audemars Piguet, and other higher end manufactures aim and deliver past the Swiss watch requirements. That is, certain luxury watch brands do well exceed the threshold requirements for what makes a watch Swiss.

Due to this very reason, H. Moser decided to forgo the “Swiss Made” logo on their dials, since it’s getting meaningless with the 60% rule. In fact, close to 100% of their parts and manufacturing are done in Switzerland.
The Swiss used to make a lot of schlock watches too before the quartz crisis. Examples still pop up on eBay no jewel or one jewel wonders. Centuries of craftsmanship my butt.
Superb article. I see that the likes of Damasko like to state that their watches are certifiably made in Germany. I guess that’s a fairly tight standard, but who knows what that actually means?
Thanks for the content 👊😎
Thank you for watching!
The 60% caliber parts, case etc are they really produced in Swiss , ETA / SW has manufacturing plants overseas! Buying from ETA complete Calibre considered as SWiss? The 40% from where!? The Swiss Made Brand gettin less and less FAncy Check China, Thailand India Asean !
not all of the watch has to be made in Switzerland to qualify
Marketing is 40-70% of most brand budgets. So as long as the HQ is based in Switzerland… and you use an ETA movement… 🤔
John- agree to you. Get going 🚀
What does Swiss Made convey to a buyer? A Swiss Made watch implies labor, industrial and environmental practices that are different from those in, say, China. With Swiss Made being a word game meaning nothing, Moser has taken the right approach and now stands on the strength of its own reputation. Which is a shame for Switzerland. One should contrast the essential meaningless of Swiss Made to the "Made In USA" standard, as described by the FTC
- What is the standard for a product to be called Made in USA without qualification?
For a product to be called Made in USA, or claimed to be of domestic origin without qualifications or limits on the claim, the product must be "all or virtually all" made in the U.S. The term "United States," as referred to in the Enforcement Policy Statement, includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories and possessions.
- What does "all or virtually all" mean?
"All or virtually all" means that all significant parts and processing that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. That is, the product should contain no - or negligible - foreign content.
I bought invicta swiss made automatic model 44751 unfortunately swiss made not under 6 o'clock place on dial somewhere alse and also says swiss made on case back I'm not sure if invicta trying fake it lol I hoping you can chick it up on website let me know I would appreciate it help me
I heard most of the components of Rolex movements are made in China.
😂😂😂😂now that would be a game changer for their reputation lmfaoo
Actually... Rolex are made in Mumbai in a village by a part time farmer and has few Rusty tools and he services the watch with sweaty hands the room is hot and humid and he accidentally spills some curry in it ..,......same watch sold two days later to a millionaire
Obviously as a small Country, Switzerland must import many parts( raw & partially finished), I'm ok with that. What I'm not ok with is Swiss brands having many higher value parts ( cases, dials, bracelets) made overseas, but not being forthright in stating and/or concealing this.
I'm done with watches labelled "Swiss Made" when only the movement is Swiss made, & most of the parts made elsewhere. The mystique is gone. Game over for me. Tired of paying watchmakers premium just because movement is "Swiss Made".
Why are people acting like swiss watches are the first industry that buys cheaper materials and minimum wage from wage ? Like first time on earth? Its not like they scamming people saying 100% everything swiss but in reality is 40-50% china parts or something....
It’s both-not either or. First is quality of the watch. Second is where it is from. It does matter where it is from. How much the matters is subjective. Good video.
they also buy parts from another company, example swiss ABC company makes a swiss watch they then look for swiss CDE company that has factories in China, the entire watch is made in China, company CDE ships the parts to their swiss facility does some QC, then repacks and sends them to swiss ABC company, now swiss ABC company can call the watch and all its parts made in swiss because company CDE is a swiss company and they did the QC in swiss. big ass loophole, the bigger the swiss company the high the chance they are using this method, because it gives them more profit while not increasing the price. example labour in China 1 weeks of work is the same as a swiss guys 1 day, so when they use the 60% value in in swiss, the swiss guy just needs to stare at it long enough and it would be 60% value done in swiss.
Informing is important. However, promoting the Seiko brand in this context does not seem impartial or serious. This brand does not have the quality that is claimed here. Where are the super brands located? When sponsored comments are made, this results in more rubbish on RUclips.
Great video, John. For me, it's all about the watch; design, function, durability, comfort on the wrist, complications, etc. I don't really care what country it was made in, just how it was made. I have a fairly extensive and diverse collection of watches, from all over the world, including Swiss (no, not an Invicta or Swiss Legion). As of late, I've been finding that some of the most interesting and well made watches are being created by Chinese microbrands, such as Zelos, Axios and Vario, to name a few. I know that a lot of folks seem to think that if a watch is made by the Swiss, it must be good, but I'm sure that you, and most folks who are true watch enthusiasts, know that that is not always the case.
Actually the US was the watchmaker capitol of the world for quite sometime.
So basically 100% of the component in a Swiss watch can come from China, only to be assembled, then inspected in Switzerland and as long as 60% or more of the cost was used in the assembly and inspection, then it is a Swiss Made Watch🤔😅😂🤣 LMAO
Yep, sounds legit. I like Japanese and German watches in the main.
@r2l100 Swiss Made to me means something different than the definition being thrown around by the Swiss. Assembled in Switzerland, ok, that I can get down with, but, to call it a Swiss Made Watch is just a little deceptive in my opinion 👊😁
The bigger the manufacturer, the more corners they’ll cut to get that “economy of scale”. The smaller manufacturer also make rarer watches (by definition).
