They get to pick and choose their opponents from all conferences, while playing some ACC teams(which arent the worst in the world) while maintaining rivalries with USC, Standford, and now MSU again. Conference championship week is their bye week. It would be dumb for the Irish to go to a conference full time

I do understand the benefits of being independent, however I still really wish we could join the Big 10. Location wise and rivalry wise it's all there for us. But the perk of being able to play without being tied down to any one conference has always made for some really exciting games.
If we ever do join a conference I think we’re contractually obligated to join the ACC in our deal with them that forces us to schedule a certain number of their teams every year. This is also why we were in the ACC for one year during Covid, since so much of our scheduling fell apart that was the only way we could play a playoff worthy schedule that year.
I have the utmost respect for Notre Dame as a school and program. You literally cannot tell the history of college football w/out Notre Dame. Notre Dame is woven in the fabric of college football... It's utter bullshit that they get away with being an 'independent.' What's that all about? Other programs are literally beating the piss out of each other every weekend to vie for a championship seed and you guys don't have to do that? Make that make sense.
You need to play the top of the B1G, not Purdue (and USC wasn't that good this year), and branch out to play an Alabama, Georgia, or Texas. You want to be independent then play the top teams. An SEC or B1G school doesn't get to play one tough game a year.

USC was better than their record shows… before Notre Dame they were 19 points away from being unbeaten and had led every single game. They had the talent. Just didn’t have the coaching. Besides that, FSU was supposed to be a top 10 team. The Shamrock series game was initially supposed to be played against Miami and they backed out.
Not really. They're currently 75 percent in the ACC in football and are in totally with other sports. Play two more ACC teams in football and they can play for the conference title. Instead they get none of that. And yes, granted, that would mean splitting ACC revenue and giving up that NBC deal. THAT is what this is really about. They claim "independence" but it's a lie. Freeman in his time at ND has not played top notch football programs in their schedules. They had a very soft schedule this season.
