We own a 2021 Tesla Model S Plaid and a 2022 Lucid Air Dream Performance. I think this review of the Lucid Air tracks my experience of the car more closely than any other review I've seen, giving it the kudos it deserves as an exhilarating driving machine and a roomy, luxurious passenger conveyance, and the slams it still deserves on software issues even after a year of OTA updates.
I would add that, with now over 16,000 miles on the odometers of our Plaid and our Air Dream (early production car no. 154), the Plaid has developed body squeaks and groans while the Air remains as solid as a bank vault. (The Plaid also had more fit/finish issues at delivery than the Air.)
Long story short: the Plaid is our second Tesla and will be our last. The Air is our first Lucid, and our next vehicle purchase will likely be the Lucid Gravity SUV to replace our Honda Odyssey.

I got my Air GT in April before the GT Performance version came out. "Only" 816hp, but somehow that seems like enough. The computer stuff has quickly gotten better, my lane keeping works very well, but the key fob thing can be irritating.
What I really enjoy most about the car is the ability to comfortably eat miles at full Texas speed from my DFW home (boring roads) to places such as the Hill Country, the Ozarks or Colorado, where the driving is more engaging. When the world turns warm and green again, I will head over to the Smokey Mountain area, another favorite of mine. When really pushed in the tighter stuff the car is simply amazing.
BTW, CEO Rawlinson _was_ head engineer at Lotus. Chief designer Jenkins is responsible for the much admired latest MX-5 Miata. Lucid has an all-star cast.

I got to test drive the same one in Canada, and I honestly thought this was more Mercedes S Class than the EQS. And I think this is the problem with Mercedes, Audi and BMW and where they screwed up, they don't want their EV flagship to compete with their AMG Flagships. The Lucid Air GT is so damn good, and for the money I think I would take it over an EQS any day and I would take it over an 63 AMG any day. It's more pleasant to be in and it drives better.

Horsepower is a function of WATTAGE. Wattage is gained by increasing battery size (wattage is voltage x amperage, adding cells will increase voltage OR amperage depending on how you wire them) so you get a shit ton of power with a bigger battery. That basically means you get range AND power, not range OR power. You get both.
That also means more power = more weight.

    • @Miata822
      @Miata822 Год назад

Yes, within reason. It is resistance to the wheels turning that makes a motor pull more power. all induction or PM motors draw very little power when freewheeling..
So if it takes let's say 14hp (14hp = 10.4kW)) to maintain 50mph on level ground (a realistic number), that's all the power any motor will consume to keep the car at that speed. Where the difference between a big motor and a little motor shows up is when you accelerate. When launching this Lucid its motors consume just over 783kW. A smaller motor asked to do the same will just get hot and let out the magic smoke.

The key fob proximity issue is easily solved by actually locking the car! Just press the fob once and it will lock and stay locked. I do this all the time and as long as I don't walk too far away, it will stay locked the entire time even when I am moving all around the car. Same goes for walking away. Simply lock the car yourself. It is always an option. You make it sound as if it is not available. If you rely on walk away lock, it will continue to lock and unlock if you remain in the vicinity. You can also press the driver door handle (at the point closest to the front) to lock the car if you do not carry the fob and don't want to open the app.

I love so much about what they do. The packaging makes Tesla look clumsy, and those make Mercedes and BMW into EV fools.
I can see myself having a Lucid if my other car is a dependable petrol stationwagon or SUV. And if in an ideal world Lucid made a wagon or I have mine chopped to one, the other car could be like a Rivian R1S or maybe better a petrol one after all. 5 car garage I'd be able to pick out somehow though, I'm sure.

I am only interested in EVs in one pedal driving mode. When you have to step on the brake pedal, it reminds me too much of driving a torque converter automatic. When it's one pedal, it feels sufficiently engaged to me. That said for a freeway cruise I'd probably take it out of one pedal mode.

1000 hp EV sedans are stupid. The manufacturer could make them 1000 hp capable but restrict the driver’s ability to use more than 400 hp worth. Sell that to the masses then release an unrestricted sports car for fun. The point of EVs are to save the planet but consuming massive amounts of electricity, especially considering a lot of areas still burn coal, defeats the point

pdals better push back the more you push into them to be easy to hold position and discourage over powering and overbraking and to know how much power is left to use especially asyou dont have engine sound.. although being bale to put in fake sound can help , base heavy sound correlating with torque, rpm correlateing with high pitch sound, loudness correalting with energy output ... and pssobily seperate sound from each powered wheel, possibly a much quiter base heavy sound for brake power level used.

  • @ΘάνατοςΧορτοφάγος

Uh, it does take more current to turn a bigger motor, if at no load. But in the case of an EV, its very little, so ok

The faster accelerating 2023 Model S Plaid costs substantially less (starting at $115K, or $140K fully equipped) with better software, great build quality and the charging network. Buying a Tesla means you'll soon have access to Starlink (the company that's been providing free internet for Ukraine). Tesla had 44% growth in 2022, (down from 95% growth in 2021) while other automakers are flat or declining. On the other hand, Lucid's primary investor/owner is the Saudi Arabian sovereign investment fund with 61% ownership.
