Meghalaya: Major Slump In Hotel Bookings After Assam Vehicles Stopped

- The North-eastern state of Meghalaya which is known for its tourism footfall, is facing trouble times.
10 person have been arrested in Meghalaya for stopping tourists from Assam from entering state, this incident has triggered 30 percent slump in hotel booking. This came days after four first information reports were filed against various groups in connection with the alleged assault of migrant labourers who were checked for “work permits”.
On Friday, members of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Federation had set up a “check-point” at Umtyngngar, about 20 kilometres from the state capital Shillong. They prevented vehicles bearing Assam registration plates from travelling to the popular tourist destinations of Sohra and Dawki.
The trouble that has been have been brewing for sometime.
The Khasi Students’ Union had on July 9 checked migrant labourers for “work permits” amid its renewed calls for the implementation of an Inner Line Permit in Meghalaya.

This type of situation might hamper the tourism sector for now but it is eventually necessary for the people of Meghalaya to protect their land. One clear example can be seen and learnt from Tripura and some parts of Assam where they’ve become minority in their own indigenous land. If the government cannot do their job, it is the civil societies/student’s bodies to act on it.
I support Meghalaya people, ILP should be immediately implemented. Best wishes from Assam.

I was borned in Meghalaya, Shillong and my parents used to work there I have been living there for 20 years and local people are very kind yeah sometimes some tension occurs. But its there rights to get an ILP they are not stopping anyone to enter or work, just give them their rights and all problems and tensions will be solve.

tourist should also understand when they want to visit they should not hire car from outside meghalaya but they should hire from within the state only so that the local get benefit not by hiring from Assam, many non tribal who came to work as labourer here many they have no proper documents this not only put the state in danger but the country also every indian should have proper documents to verify themselves when ever is asked so safety prevails in the state and to those labourers also.those who have documents they are coming and nothing disturbed them but they let them worked and travel.

Modi Government will not grant ILP even State Government is not taking serious regarding infiltration. Meghalaya needs to check influx, it is very serious issues even in Garo Hills so many Non-tribals without any valid documents or TNT from GHADC were doing business in various Districts of Garo Hills. So it is a very serious issues n pressure groups were fighting and seeking Government intervention since a long time but in vain .
Assamese people have no problem with ILP implementation in Meghalaya. Pseudo NGOs better learn how to get things done within the bounds of law and order, or else if you think you can touch any of our people and get away with it, you're absolutely wrong - just be ready for consequences. I know quite well, how inflated and brave the so called pressure groups feel when they lay hand on weak daily wage earners, harass them, threaten them, so they have developed a sense of immunity as they have been doing it over the years; but just know that those things won't work out for the Assamese people and Assam. The Inner Line Permit (ILP) in India was started to regulate the movement of people into sensitive areas near the international border, particularly in regions bordering China.
Meghalaya don't share any International border unlike Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, Sikkim (some regions) and Ladakh (some regions)
So the question of ILP for the state doesn't arise and the demand is just absurd.

Implementation of ILP or MRSS is indeed required for Meghalaya but harrasment to the neighbour is not acceptable. People from shora or Dawki will loss income hugely, if tourist stop visiting these areas. And also many labourers had labour licences yet still these people were kicked out, in the name of Bangladeshis each and other non-tribal are been harss petrol bomb been thrown to non-tribal houses. Non-tribal being killed numerously
