This probably won’t help much but for simple stops such as at a light or stop sign or stoppage in traffic you can safely downshift and use only the rear brake, provided you start decelerating ahead of time, for stops that require a bit more urgency apply slight front brake and back brake on top of you downshifting this will decrease the time it takes you to stop
