I live as part of a tribe in an off-grid community in West Cork. Now with autumn upon us, it's wooding time again, going off into the forest with a hatchet, handsaw and backpack. It's so beautiful though doing it first time in the morning and, as I do it, barefoot. You appreciate life so much more and also your fire in the stove. I've built my own roundhouse out of pallets and pine poles and mostly wood, with a living roof and dry stone walls around half of it, so I get what you say about the building. I've stripped a lot from my life, no bank account, no car, odd jobs to get a few quid in, living purely by faith (well, getting there, it's a long and sometimes painful process) and thriving. Having a garden and an abundant harvest, plus foraging is amazing. Then making everything from scratch, like your friends, which is the first video I ever saw of you and them over an open fire...life can't get better than this I think. All the best and keep warm in winter. ;-)
Slavs traditionally cover the insulation between the logs with either clay or plaster, so it stays where it's supposed to. The most traditional way of doing this being mud with straws.
I admire you for all the work you do. We moved to the countryside 1.5 months ago, but we have our own running water from our well: we have a bathroom (from the 1960's) that we're renovating, and we have "normal" electricity. Hubby is definitely not going to cut down our trees with just an axe, but he will use a chainsaw. I'm already finding our lives more simple/primitive than what we had in the city, but I can't really imagine having to fight to stay warm. I have an autoimmune disease affecting my joints and mostly my back. Warmth helps it .. so the thought of having to shower outside in the cold ... oh no! I hope your back isn't injured permanently. Please take good care of it, take your time recovering and listen to what your body needs. I can tell you that having your health while living in the middle of nowhere is very important! Cherish it while you still have it, Kalle!
🌲🌲🌲 if there ever comes a time again when traveling the world is possible without mandated health control, Sweden is my first choice. Man, I wish I lived there already. ♥️🙏
💚💛💚 Apparently my phone doesn't have a tree emoji, or I'd be giving you one. I'd love to see your deodorant recipe. I know bought ones have nasty things in them, so avoid them during winter, but in an Australian summer I need something strong.
Regarding the insulation between the logs of your cabin… the old shipbuilders used something that they called to fill the gaps in the planking of the ship. It is hemp fiber that has been soaked in pine tar. It was pounded into place with a chisel-like tool and a mallet to help keep the water out.🌲🌲🌲
🌲 While I am still transition between city and forest life, the scenery and pace of the videos give my soul some peace because I know I will be there soon enough. Thus far I will continue riding my bike to the nearest forest every morning and be away in the weekends.
🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲 I'm sorry to hear that you're stressed about the firewood and roof situation, but if it's any consolation you videos are really meaningful to me. They always relax me and bring peace to my soul, which could certainly use some peace these days. Thank you again. Oh, and I'd really be interested in learning how you make your own deodorant.
I think you could avoid freezing temperatures in the cabin by using etnographical techniques. For example, build a mock-up wall 30-40cm from the walls of the cabin. You could pile up logs from the forest between poles that would be cut for firewood next spring or use the old planks from the roof renovation. The space between the mock-up wall and the cabin wall can be used for storage of firewood, this additionally insulates the cabin. Outside the mock-up wall you can pile up snow, next to the wall compacted, further away just a loose heap, up to roof height. This will block out the wind for good and again help insulation. And all the materials are for free ;) Also consider shutters on the windows and winter reindeer skin hanged inside in front of them. And building a stone or brick wall next to the fireplace will keep the room temperature more stable. So would thick woolen blankets reaching from the ceiling to the floor hanged in the doorways - they would stop the warmth escaping the cabin each time you open the door. You could also place a tube or big buckets next to the main door where you could collect snow or ice and allow it to melt slowly, no need to go outside every time you want a cup of tea nor use firewood to melt. A diet rich in fats makes it easier to adapt, clothing and blankets made of animal skin are superior to modern materials (so say pepole from Yakutia). I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you two, it's a pleasure to watch your channel. Warm greetings from Poland! And please share your deo recipie :)

Can't add a tree but watched till end. Its sobering to watch you as it reminds us how much hard work actually goes into living a simpler (but not easier) lifestyle. My hat goes off to you. Well done on managing so far. It is good to have friends to help and hopefully the roof will be finished in time for winter. Good luck and god bless.
Beautiful Kalle. Thank you so much for sharing your world with us. It inspires me to stay focused on what matters and is meaningful. I really hope you can get your roof finished by winter so you and Christina can stay warm. Much love from the Pacific Northwest. 🌲💚
Hi Kalle, I've much enjoyed your videos, I'm working my way through them and have enjoyed them all so far. You have a beautifully open and honest personality in all of your videos which is perhaps why I like to watch you so much. I can empathise so much with many of your reasons for wanting to live a less cluttered and more grounded lifestyle. It's lovely to see a beautiful young couple making a go of what much be a very challenging life in such a beautiful place. You are both inspirational people who seem to remain grounded and not just living a dream. I would be interested in hearing how you make your own deodorants, and look forward to watching your future content, hoping you get your roof finished and your insulation installed in time for winter. I wish you every success in your future projects and challenges, and thank you sincerely for your excellent content produced to date.
🌲🌲🌲 love the videos! Kalle something you might want to try with hand splitting firewood is lowing your shopping block. It will give you more power in your swing! I split all my wood by hand as well! Thank you for sharing your love and kindness with us. Cheers
🌲🌲🌲Your videos are just so calming in our rushed and loud lifes. Truely appreciate the the time and afford you put while taking us a step into the forest.
relaxing touch due to the great filming paired with decent music, so please keep up the awesome content! When splitting wood with an axe it can be helpful to strike the log on it's edge, if splitting it in the middle doesn't work. Also try spreading your legs slightly apart and keep the log on the opposite side oft the splitting block, so that incase you miss the wood the axe won't end up in your legs.
🌲🌲🌲 I love this video so much! Such a good job, Kalle👏🏼 I think it’s my favourite one so far. The music and the natural sounds, the scenery and the beautiful light. Love it, thank you💚🙏🌈
Totally feel the stress you have with the roof!! I had water coming into my cabin last year too, and had to change all the roof! 💸 Really hope you and Christine can get it fixed before winter!! It’s such a stressful situation! Your axe looks great by the way, what a generous friend you got there, it sure will come in handy preparing all the wood for next winter!🪵 🪓 Thanks for another beautiful video Kalle, your videography is another level 👌🏻😍
🌲 Another beautiful video, thank you Kalle. You have a great way of telling a story by talking while continuing an activity like chopping the wood. That brings a pleasing dynamic to the video. One of the reasons I like your channel is the fact that I really enjoy watching videos from scandinavian countries since I love visiting them. Although I'm from Germany I feel very much at home in the nordic countries. Whenever I'm not able to be there myself these videos are the best compensation for it. I hope to go to Sweden again as soon as possible, maybe even in October this year. Greetings from Germany ✌🏻
For me it's very important to know how the things I have are made. Doing that process at least once you can realize its true value even if you usually buy them. It would be nice to see you doing those things 🌲

🌲 We are getting ready for winter here in North Idaho too. Autumn is definately in the air! 🍁🍂There is always more chores than time and fire wood is a big project! 🔥💪
I’d love to see the video about your deodorants and how you make them! For the longest time I’ve always struggled with skin issues not reacting well to deodorants, so I’m really wanting to get into more natural and homemade ones! 🌲
It's interesting to see how you insulate your log cabin. The log homes I'm familiar with where I'm from in Canada often use "chinking" mortar which is a mixture of masonry lime and sand.
🌲Thank you, so calming and relaxing to watch. Would love to hear about how you make natural products at home :) Really hope the roof works out for you and all the wood you need arrives!
🌲this video really conveyed the atmosphere and feelings for the anticipation for Autumn - can't wait! Would love to learn all about the things you make and do to keep life simple at the cabin.
🌲 thank you for sharing the not-going-so-smoothly things. Makes me feel better about the stuff that’s not going so well in my life. You seem to be handling it fine. Good for you 🙂
YES! Definitely make the deodorant video! That's something I haver personally been very interested in doing for awhile but haven't begun the process yet. I have made my own body soaps but deodorant and laundry soap are two things I would love to learn to make on my own.
Thank You for taking the time to create your amazing videos! . I am learning so much from your experience, and so close to being ready to share a story of restoring my families old farm. Another excellent video!
Please share the recipe! I’d love to start making things on my own and being self-reliant in small ways. What shoes are you wearing in your video? They look so comfy and almost like socks. I bet it’s so neat to walk in the woods with them! Fantastic video ❤️
I would definitely be interested in hearing your thoughts on making your own deodorant, and in general I'd be happy to see what you're able to make by yourself living in the woods ! Amazing video as always, glad to have caught it this soon ! Edit : 🌲 ;)
Insulation# In English this is called "Caulking" Traditionally it is made from hemp wool and is rammed home with wooden wedges and a mallet then sealed in with molten tar. Hope that this helps.
🌲 I broke a sweat just watching all that chopping 😅 Sharing about your homemade items sounds like a great idea! I actually gave up on deodorant and just deal with the occasional stink hahah - thankfully my boyfriend doesn't mind! I really hope the roof gets sorted before winter sets in. After nearly a year you and the family deserve a warm cabin 😄
🌲🌲I'd love to see how you make your deodorant. I use only natural ingredients for my skin care and do not make any store purchases for that anymore. So this is wonderful! 🌲🌲🌲
I live in an 80 year old, well built & well insulated, house. It talks to me. When I open the cabinets I'm right there the the man who built built them and thinking how he thought and seeing how he built the huge kitchen. Although I moved here after he passed away I see his hand and mind in the huge closet he built with shelves and unshakable pipe rods. It presents a whole picture with a front porch, an attic with pull-down stairs and a brightly lit foyer. The house is alive in comparison many other not-built-with-love-and-skill structures.
HI Kalle. Love your videos and accent. I also admire the simple life you live. You and Christine are so awesome to watch. Love you guys, keep up the great work.
When you are splitting the wood, leave the axe in the log, lift it up and throw it on the axe upside down. It will split open from its own weight. Hope it helps!
I would LOVE to see a video about making deodorant and any other household or hygiene products you make for yourself. If that is something you would like to take the time to share! 🌲
Okay, serious question from a family living a similar lifestyle to this: what was that contraption you used for a shower? We just use a cup to pour water. That looked amazing!🙏😂 Edit: 🌲🌳
@@KalleFlodin Thanks! I'll look into it. We're also in the middle of our winter preparations, so I enjoyed your beautiful video of all the hard work we do. ❤️🌲
Try to change the direction of entry for each swing. There’s a grain to it that is strong going perpendicular, but weaker going parallel. An angled cut goes deeper, and changing angles will remove a chip quickly.
🌲🌲🌲🌲 Your RUclips channel got me thru 2020 during the height of Covid lockdowns and several months of not working due to staffing reductions in the aviation industry. I love to hear your receipts of your products, I d love to make some myself! Just pure products, nothing better than that! I hope you ll share them! Thanks already!
🌲You might've already found out by now, but lindrev is called "Flax tow" in English (for the actual fibre) and the final product when mixed with tar is then called "Oakum", and drevning when done on log cabins is usually called "Chinking".
I made the Deodorant video 😀 Hope you guys will like the recipe, "How to Make Natural Deodorant": ruclips.net/video/RIxJb0pG374/видео.html

What shoes are you wearing in your video? They look so comfy and almost like socks. I bet it’s so neat to walk in the woods with them! Fantastic video ❤️
Your videos are such an inspiration to me. I hope that everything gets set up in time for winter! Always look forward to your videos. 🌲🌲🌲
Thank you so much for watching the whole video 🌲❤
I would definitely be interested in hearing your thoughts on making your own deodorant, and in general I'd be happy to see what you're able to make by yourself living in the woods !
Amazing video as always, glad to have caught it this soon !
Edit : 🌲 ;)
Me too
Insulation# In English this is called "Caulking" Traditionally it is made from hemp wool and is rammed home with wooden wedges and a mallet then sealed in with molten tar. Hope that this helps.
Check out how calking is done on wooden boats. Seeing the technique may help you move faster and do it better.
🌲 You seemed very natural talking to the camera while chopping wood! Thanks for the video 🍃
Thank you so much for saying that 😊❤
🌲 I broke a sweat just watching all that chopping 😅 Sharing about your homemade items sounds like a great idea! I actually gave up on deodorant and just deal with the occasional stink hahah - thankfully my boyfriend doesn't mind!
I really hope the roof gets sorted before winter sets in. After nearly a year you and the family deserve a warm cabin 😄
Haha, happy you could join me on the exercise 😂 I'll show you the recipe soon 😉
Yea, it's about time now 🙈
🌲🌲I'd love to see how you make your deodorant.

That looked amazing!🙏😂
Edit: 🌲🌳
Haha we did the cup thing for a long time 😅 I bought it from a store called Biltema here in Sweden, it was about $30
🌲❤
@@KalleFlodin Thanks! I'll look into it. We're also in the middle of our winter preparations, so I enjoyed your beautiful video of all the hard work we do. ❤️🌲
@@Woeschhuesli Thank you, I'll look it up! 😁
Nice to know this too!!!! We are starting van trips next spring ad a family n that will be so useful.
@Melissa Peltier Thank you! I appreciate the help. :)
🌲🌲🌲Always love and appreciate being able to follow along on your journey! 🌲🌲🌲
I’ve been loyally watching ever since. Thank you for creating such a healthy, extremely interesting and educational distraction from these difficult times. And yes - please show us how you make your deodorant ✌️ 🌲🌲🌲🌲
Hey Martin, that's so sweet of you to say ❤ Thank YOU for watching what I create!
Oh and being a person who makes her own soap and salves, I would love to see how you make deoderant.
Yes please, show us how to make the deodorant…
I’d love you know 😊
Dude! I’m in central NY US… all the same issues… getting the cottage ready for winter… sending you, Christina and the dogs all the good vibes for a warm winter season… ✌🏼
🌲 loved seeing you two together with Tova, Mathias and Ivar 🌲
I'm happy you liked it Sarah 🌲❤
Watching your videos in the middle of the night makes me much comfortable and relaxes my mind. I'm from Sri Lanka
For decades, I've used plain baking soda as my deordorant. Put it in a shaker bottle. Cheap, easy, and effective!

I find that sharing any information on how to build, or make something is very important and informative for people who might not know how to do so. And if they are already interesting in your channel you have a captive audience ready to go. Love the videos!🌲🌲🌲

🌲You might've already found out by now, but lindrev is called "Flax tow" in English (for the actual fibre) and the final product when mixed with tar is then called "Oakum", and drevning when done on log cabins is usually called "Chinking".
It would be great to see how you make your natural products-yes please :)
🌲 Lovely video. Don't get too discouraged. It takes time to find a rhythm to doing those yearly tasks.
Sure hope that you're able to be warm and cozy, before winter approaches. Best of luck to you. 🌲🌲
Gracias por compartir tanta belleza . Te sigo desde Puerto Rico. Un abrazo!!!
