I think most people make a character of an original species because they think they're cute and only care about the lore later.

open/closed species have always been weird to me, for a few reasons. considering a lot of the famous ones are pretty similar in that they take 2 things and put them together (then add floof), is it really fair to even judge whether other people are allowed to also draw inspiration from or have that idea? inspiration, emulation, innovation. its all part of the artistic process, and we seem perfectly fine emulating style, or creating OCs in the universes of other peoples' works but then draw the line at furries? i've heard the explanation that some species are very near and dear to the creator, so its out of respect no one draws them, but thats still not applied to any other mediums. a lot of the times drawing inspiration from, emulating, or fanart of work whether deeply personal or not is regarded as respect in itself.
and wheres the limit?
how original is crossing 2 already popular species? is it just to tell someone they cant have that idea because someone else put their name on it first?

I think there are bad examples and good examples. Wickerbeasts and protogen are an example of good unique species, while manokit aren't original aside from the lore.
@@SerasThings yeah i really appreciate protogen being open. i dont draw them myself but im happy that so many people can get creative and involved without someone telling them they arent allowed to art.
to clarify i dont have an issue with "open" species. i just think its weird to have the dichotomy at all.

Isn't open species just species that you can freely make ocs of, while closed species are the ones you must buy from the og creator for it to be legit 🤔
Closed can also be bought from from approved artists other than the creator. But yeah that's the gist.

Amino is a pretty good place for finding info! I know that lots of popular species, such as manokits and protogens, have their own communities! In Manokit Amino, one of the retired leaders (Zed Shirogane) are the artist of multiple of the species info sheets. Because of this, they have info links that is at least relatively up-to-date!
I'm totally going to make a Manokit now. I always loved canid characters but also the ocean. I couldn't decide on a fursona either. But this seems good for me.

6:15 - 6:58 I thought of something. Why would they need to make themselves look more attractive if they're blind? I feel appearances wouldn't matter for a species that cannot see.
maybe they focus on smelling attractive?
they seem like a fun concept and in my opinion, would prosper better as a closed species with all the rules and whatnot
I'd agree if the owners didn't disappear from the face of the earth. They dont seem super interested in managing the community.
@@SerasThings that’s honestly a shame because i can see the appeal in these, especially for ingenious Hawaiians in the furry community. not exactly my cup of tea but i appreciate what they were trying to go for, for the most part :)
Personally I have an issue with things being closed unless it's meant to be personal. Unless it's within reason I get really irritated when it's like, out of affordability for most community members.
So if it were to be closed, it'd need to be managed well and appropriately priced for adopts/access to making one.
It's just hard to do closed for another reason
An example is protogens and primagens. Some people get at protogen characters for having allowed features that make them look like primagens but aren't meant to be.
So that can also be an issue
@@Its_Asteria I think this is a highly subjective issue and you can't really talk about this without upsetting people. People won't agree with what I have to say about it and I'd rather avoid upsetting people.
I lost my interest in Manokits when Dubmutt supported the Confederate flag, but now that I am older I'm realizing the incorporating of Hawaiian culture along side that is

I didn't know about the confederate flag thing. But the potential appropriation bugged me a bit, but I couldn't find much on dub to find out their heritage so I didn't mention it.

Though manokits can be given a better meaning separate from dubmutt I suppose. That's usually how I look at it. If the species is given to someone else and has an overall positive tone. Their creation may have been malicious but today are overall positive. I think especially with the new lore to separate from the old lore
I don't mind manokits mainly vecause I didn't even know this information until today so most people don't even know what happened with dubmutt most likely

Im torn because i love some aspects of it like their reproduction and their appearance, but i dont want to make one because i would only want one that doesnt follow the rules of the species. however i dont want to just steal some of their ideas to make my own species thats basically the same...
am I allowed to somehow just make a character that's insprired heavily by them and the lore but not follow all the rules of them?
all these rules are really sadly deterring.... I just want to have creative freedom without being afraid of being in trouble by the fandom. i dont know what the owner is okay with or not. can I just make one by my own ideas and call it an "unofficial manokit" or something?

*{Dreamtails}*
*{Appearance}*
Dreamtails are soft, fluffy, creatures with like.. The largest f*cking tail lefloofus like insanely fluffy and large. They come in all colors but neon. Common colors can be any colors spotted in the sky, including white for clouds. They have a giant star on their upper chest area and a row of small stars leading to a giant star on the tail. Their eyes are closed, unless they are a royal (to be royal just give credit lol) with a black ruby visor with patterns of any gem closest to the main color of the Dreamtail. The visor is also locked in place, unable to be moved. The only way to see the eyes of royal Dreamtails is by breaking the sturdy visor. Also, they can have wings.
*{Male VS Female}*
Female have breasts. (NO NIPPLES THEY REPRODUCE SIMILAR TO MANOKITS BUT INSERTING THY SOULS TO STARS OR SMALL CLOUDS!)
Males have cloud like horns and fins!
*{Traits}*
Dreamtails can swim, only in shallow water. They also control dreams, stars, comets, and clouds. Also, they float.
*{Lore}*
Dreamtails are hard to spot, as they often are in the higher area of clouds. They can be spotted if in an airplane however. People have said they've seen the stars glisten and glow and drop A little Dreamtail. They have never been spotted opening their mouth or eyes. However, on one day, A tornado pulled many Dreamtails down to the ground. Humans didn't accept these new visitors, almost making the Dreamtails extinct.

I plan to eventually. Probably after I do a lot more of these and become the undisputed ruler of fandom species.
The way they reproduce reminds me a lot of a species I made up several years ago xD They've got bird features, so I figured 'eggs would make sense', but I also wanted to stray away from NSFW stuff, and wanted to enable couples of more than specific gender identities, soooo..... Instead of the couple OR a single 'person' making something, they'll simply come upon an egg. Where did this egg come from? How was it made? No-one knows! But if they choose to nurture the egg and take care of it, the being that hatches from it (that somehow is the same species) is now their child. Funny enough, the kiddos of my species had a pretty sped up beginning life-span too lol.
Also the gender features bit, haha, kinda funny you'd say all that stuff, considering the thoughts I had for the species of mine where they had 2 main/major magic types, an all the members of the species had one of these two magic types. The masculine ones tended to be born with the capability of casting healing magic, whereas the feminine ones were enchanters - however, neither magic type was strictly tied to anything, it was just most common for these to be a thing. I did have at least one masculine identifying one who was an Enchantment Magic user
Also, no gender differences, you can't really tell stuff apart, it's more on how the being itself chooses to represent & present themselves

Most of my species related creations are a bit dusty though, and currently reside on the back shelves of my mind. Maybe I'll work on them one day, who knows. Too many other projects for now for that though

Well, technically you could create your own species that looks a bit like manokits and a few other animals combined. It could work, and you could have your fursona
I think you underestimate how picky choosy I am because all of the manikit sonas I have are all song mix of all the new or maybe tribal and beach dweller

(I don't mean to sound upset in this comment) Something I don't get is.. who is making or upholding all those rules? Like, do you really need to adhere to something as specific as "pupil shape must be round" if the creator doesn't care anymore?
