since trivium started using 7 strings in "shogun" and you have a 6 string im assuming you are tuned either baritone (beadgb) or drop A right? if not im curious what tuning it is.

It's a string dampener. It's used to mute the strings near the headstock so you don't get those wild hums, especially when you let the strings ring and suddenly muting them. You'll hear this when your amp is really loud or when you use monitors in front of you, it gets annoying sometimes.

forsake not the dream is from in waves where they used 6 strings, it's in drop c sharp
first, Trivium started using 7 strings in THE CRUSADE. second, since IN WAVES trivium returned to 6 strings with C# tune.

Not for chords...when you put it on your strings, you'll get a cleaner tone for solos, especially by doing sweep-picking and tapping licks
kenny24598 in your jackson I believe it's doing nothing cause the strings are affected by the locking nut other than that seek cover ;)
