  • The naval combat of Iquique between La Esmeralda and the Huáscar and the naval combat of Punta Gruesa between the Covadonga and the Independence occurred at the beginning of the maritime campaign in the War of the Pacific on May 21, 1879.
In both combats Chile and Peru disputed the control of the sea and above all that of Iquique was fundamental for the course of the war since until today it is remembered in both countries.
The Esmeralda was commanded by Arturo Prat, the Huáscar by Miguel Grau, the Covadonga by Carlos Condell and the Independence by Juan Moore.
In addition, Juan Williams and the Chilean fleet were heading to the port of Callao while the Peruvian squadron was heading to Arica towards the ports of northern Chile.
