This was taken on the last night that Kai Tak was open. The flashes are from the thousands of people who turned out to watch the last few planes come in and take photos. There is a link in the description to the non-music version. Thanks for watching.
I'm sure I left a comments years or months ago but I watched again and I wanted to leave a comment. Excellent :) I loved that camera flashes around the path while approaching.
Actually, for an Evanescence song, that was pretty neat. I for one got the shivers when I read Evanescence and found myself positively surprised. Good video, the plane taking off in the end is the kicker, good thing you left that in :)
5 stars, great approach and landing. I think that as a pilot Kai Tak was probably the greatest test of skill.... but doing a KISS landing in Kai Tak..... OMG...
I liked it. You had the choice to choose no music. Loved the flash bulbs on approach. Also the ALS curved to the right i assume at the checkerboard. Totally cool.
in it probally was a checkpoint sorta thing where the plane flys through two becons on each side of the plane to kinda make sure hes lined up for the final turn
with a compass, for example, runway 12 means that the runway is heading 120 degrees if u take the north as 0 degrees and the soutn as 180 ( so if a runway has the number 18, its heading the south)
@b1ueocean It depends on the approach type TRACON gives you. For instance, if approach tells you ILS runway 12 (Instrument Landing Sequence), he/she will vector you to the localizer (the "line up" of the runway). Then the navigation equipment provides the pilot the proper path and slope to fly the plane to the runway. If approach tells you visual runway 12, he/she will vector you to a point where you can see runway 12, and identify it as 12...
So beautiful :') Lol I know that seems strange. But I grew up in Hong Kong, and was a little too young to remember Kai Tak, even though I landed and took off from there many times :( I missed so much!
It's a bit of both because V1 is a decision speed. For example, in case of an engine failiure when a plane is going faster than V1, it must takeoff because it will not be able to brake in time before reaching the end of the runway. V1 is usually determined by the weight of the aircraft.
As I know the video was taken the last night before the new HKG airport went into service leaving good-old fellow KaiTak out of use. Therefore many citizens tried to take last pictures from the last series of incoming aircraft before everything changes to quietness around there.. that is why there is so many flashing during flyover into the old airport. A remarkable thing of the kaitak facility were the curved "lead-in flashers" (see at the left edge around 2:20 for some while) leading the pilots into the kaitak behind a last and quite steep right turn to fly before setting on to touchdown. KaiTak was the just-above-heads-flyover city quarter of Hongkong - and therefore ideal for planespotting.
"This was recorded on the last night that Kai Tak was open. The flight goes over Kai Tak, Hong Kong Island, the new airport, Tsing Ma bridge and into Kai Tak. You can see the lead-in lights as well as people photographing the plane on the last night." PLEASE READ
@b1ueocean Runway numbers are also assigned depending on the heading it's facing (i.e., runway 12 is facing at or near heading 120 degrees). Pilots should also have airport diagrams that depict the airport, so the pilot knows what he/she is looking for.
Yes I think so, the flashing lights shows the pilote that the aircraft follows the good way. But in this vid some flashing lights are simply the tourists camera's flashings
@sphmusak - get X-Plane, the flight simulator for all major computer systems, and try it. Set it for night time approach and see how well you do. Yes, it may not be quite the same thing as reality, however, given the aerodynamics it uses (unlike MS Flight Sim - sorry if I insult anyone), you get a fairly good comparison - You thank Boeing for using good ILS as well as the ATC and good approach plates.
Do the Runways have numbers you can see from the sky... if ATC says for example Runway 12 and your in the air basically seeing the whole airport, how do u know where the actual runway your heading for is?
I have the feeling that landing at Kai Tak was much easier at a clear night rather than at a clear day, the guide lights are so easy to identify during the night.
I believe that the flashing lights are there for the pilots to see their distnace from the ground so there wont be any accident where the plane is just too low and crash against the buildings. Not sure though, feel free to correct me :)
Here are a few tips that have made flying, (Civil and military) interesting for me over the last 45 years. 1/ The most dangerous part of your flight is driving/getting to and from the airport!. 2/ Read up about the aeroplane(s) you will be in, learn what goes on during take-off and landing, observe the control surfaces as they operate, -spoilers/leading edge and trailing edge flaps, ailerons - it IS interesting!. In flight, the wings will FLEX, -completely normal. ENJOY!.
This is the standard approach for Kai Tak. It's actually more impressive in the day. There is a Big hill at the base of the airport. It's much safer to come in and make that sharp right turn instead of coming over the top of that hill and nose diving to the runway. There is a navigation beacon at the top of that hill
@Mooboog man i can't work. i lost my legs and left arm plus three digits on my right hand in a bizarre snowshoeing accident. i watch these plane landings to travel the world vicariously through the intertronz and youtube. gosh get off my case.
those aren't camera flashes....those are the approach lights guiding in along the amazing kai tak approach. all major airports have them....you see them because they are in a curve....usually its a straight line. But due to the unique approach the aircraft are in a constant turn till, at times crossing the fence. the ones near the end, are just marking the boundary of the airport i believe.
this is the airport where you have to actually flip the aircraft to get the approach right. That sounds extreme but imagine the approach at night when raining.
from what i remember, that was the last night, but not the last landing was a hong kong dragon airlines flight from chongqing, and to plane 15man, obviously someone else filmed and, how could a pilot hold and camera while flying one of the worlds most difficult approaches.
People, please look at both the video information and the annotation. I provide 2 separate versions of this video. One with music and one without here v=6X6HNOKSQUs
Great video I live in a bunch of towers beside the kai tak airport and u can see the runway. I would do anything to see it back in business .The Towers I am living in were there since 1980 so it must have been cool to see that. Now this airport is covered in grass and they are turning it into an estate I think, If u wanna see the picture of this airport now you can go to my youtube page and ask
is there really such a thing called "autoland"? i know this feature exists in simulators(fsx/fs9). if it really exists, why dont all the pilots use this feature when landing? isnt it much easier and safer?

AIRBOYD has the best aviaton flix... Keep up the good work...
Thanks for the memories of Kai Tak.
Wicked video! Love all the cameras going off just before it lands.
I am HongKonger. This is the last night of the Kai Tak Airport. As a airport served Hong Kong more than 70 years, it is memorable for all of us.
Hong Kong is so beautiful, especially at night. I cant wait till I get to see it with my own eyes!
5 stars!! fantastic approach, fantastic landing.. amazing night shot!
thank you so much. brings back many memories of flying into Kai Tak (as a passenger).
i love how the lyric don't be afraid happens while you're flying right over the buildings....great song...legendary approach...
5 stars, great approach and landing. I think that as a pilot Kai Tak was probably the greatest test of skill.... but doing a KISS landing in Kai Tak..... OMG...
Thank god u put that link without music cause last thing that i want to hear is Evanescence with aviation videos!
Thank you.
I liked it. You had the choice to choose no music. Loved the flash bulbs on approach. Also the ALS curved to the right i assume at the checkerboard. Totally cool.
the bridge at the night with the lights is beautiful
luv the camera flashes very nice
the music is the best it fits with the video as well 5 star do more vids like this please
loved the camera flashes and the city lighting
5 *
Great video! Amazing.
The music is great!
Congratulations.
Great Video!!
Holding MY LAST BREATH!!
Excellent video!!
in it probally was a checkpoint sorta thing where the plane flys through two becons on each side of the plane to kinda make sure hes lined up for the final turn
FANTASTIC video. 5 stars hands down.
I don't know why this wasn't already rated that!
HK is awesome.
When was this taken?

GREAT RECORDING!!!
nice video with cool music, five stars from me
Rockin' song. Evanescence rocks. Great vid.
Beautiful! I love flying
Great vid, great soundtrack!
Lots of people taking pics just before the landing. Must have been an amazing sight to see!
This was the best pilot ever. I couldn't tell when the plane made contact with the runway.
As I know the video was taken the last night before the new HKG airport went into service leaving good-old fellow KaiTak out of use. @drapperneverstops3 As far as I know the airport is closed. But I'm not sure whether it's still open for small prop aircraft like you said.
very nice view from the airplane!!!!

PLEASE READ
it's so cool! I love planes!
thanks buddy.. appreciate that!

amazing video!
i miss Kai Tak Airport so much~!!
they knew it was the last flight for Kai Tak Airport ... my fds went out took photo too~
WOW..its already 11 years ago !
Yes I think so, the flashing lights shows the pilote that the aircraft follows the good way. But in this vid some flashing lights are simply the tourists camera's flashings
Thanks for nice view for my eyes. Kind regards and Love. Yemenifish
@Mooboog there not cameras... strobe lights indicating the lineup into the runway
thank you very much for explanation. quite a clever system.

Appreciate this explanation, very helpful dude :)
Do the Runways have numbers you can see from the sky... if ATC says for example Runway 12 and your in the air basically seeing the whole airport, how do u know where the actual runway your heading for is?
@drapperneverstops3 Just read about it on Wikipedia, looks like they're building or have built a ferry terminal on the airport's land.
Muito bom o video... bom mesmo!
@FF35Pilot Kai Tak is now being rebuilt as a cruise terminal.
@anudeep1985 i love love love love the flap sound of the a380...
I have the feeling that landing at Kai Tak was much easier at a clear night rather than at a clear day, the guide lights are so easy to identify during the night.

@anudeep1985 Fight video? I missed the fighting!
Yeah i'm also wondering, it looks like there are too many flashes to be cameras but what else then?
It is better to see a video like this without music; cause cooler with the sound of the engines.
i think only of airplanes and great landings every single tym i hear this song.... now i m planning to give exams for obtaining pilot license...
xDDD i think that moment is quite funny, half of the city taking photos xD
nice Video!!!
its one of the igs becons that lead down to the runway not camera flashes
@TheBigbossman1987 Amy Lee from Evanescence. (look up Evanescence to find the song. Its under the name "My Last Breath")
I was just about to ask, thank you!
Here are a few tips that have made flying, (Civil and military) interesting for me over the last 45 years.

i agree. And don't give me thumbs down for this.
Are those flashes camera flashes?

AMAZING!!!
were those cameras flashing around three minutes? btw very nice vid, try diff music
brightest hour by The Submarine
just a suggestion, 5*
was that during the day with a smog alert? It's so dark i can hardly breath looking at it.
man, it's one of the most challenging approaches ever, 5*
amazing!!!
what are those flashes around 2:52 onwards?
flying into Kai Tak should make u feel like a celeb... u see all them flashes on the approach.. haha...
The Kai Tak airport was shut down in 1998. When did they make this video??
@Mooboog
wassup with those camera flashes going off in the city?
those aren't camera flashes....those are the approach lights guiding in along the amazing kai tak approach.
all major airports have them....you see them because they are in a curve....usually its a straight line. But due to the unique approach the aircraft are in a constant turn till, at times crossing the fence.

the ground peoples flashlights are the best
Yeah I was wondering the exact same thing.
lol look at those camera flashes going off on short final
nice videos, are you piloting or taking video?
incredible..... notice the flashes of the cameras (minute 2:50)
@racsopetrenas Camera flashes? They don't have an emoticon for WTF are you thinking, son.
Please tell me what is this music?
from what i remember, that was the last night, but not the last landing was a hong kong dragon airlines flight from chongqing, and to plane 15man, obviously someone else filmed and, how could a pilot hold and camera while flying one of the worlds most difficult approaches.
Those of us that have spent years on a flight deck like the music.
People, please look at both the video information and the annotation. I provide 2 separate versions of this video. One with music and one without here v=6X6HNOKSQUs
which is the name of the song?
which song is this??can someone please tell me??
Great video

@MultiMasterGee Yeah it is, so? You're confused about something?
Nice, but I prefer without music, just the cockpit sound.
Why is this video unlisted?
who flimed this ? your camara man or yourself?? were you flying the plane?
