If $250-300 is the price in your area that is most unfortunate. That price is grossly inflated in comparison to what it would cost you where I'm from. I hold a annual mouth guard clinic for kids in minor hockey each year and charge $35 for these mouth guards. During this clinic anyone is welcomed to have a professionally made mouth guard made for that price.

Look back through the comments. $35. Even if I charged the full price listed in our fee guide a trip to the dentist once to repair a broken tooth so your child isn't in agony would be at least double the cost of the mouth guard. And not to mention they protect against concussions. Your child's wellbeing is worth a little more than $35.
I think I didn't make my point clear enough. The price listed (if you can ever find a dentist honest enough to list their price online) is usually around $100 for custom mouth guards. If you are only charging $35 each for casting impression and mouth guards, then that's better than others I've seen. Now if I was an adult a permanent mouth guard would totally make sense. However the point I was trying to make is that this kid's mouth is still changing and two $35 mouth guards every 6 months is still more expensive than I would be willing to pay. If you consider that boil and bite guards only cost $5-$10 and I have yet to find any studies that show that a hard thermoplastic mouth guard made by a dentist is significantly safer than a soft rubber boil and bite mouth guard. The few articles I did find were sponsored by mouth guard companies or dentists offering their services for a nominal fee. As a kid I used boil and bite guards and there were many times I got hit in the lip and the soft rubber didn't split my lip, so imagine my confusion when I see that these custom guards are hard plastic. Furthermore I remember on several occasions when one of my teammates forgot his mouth guard and a readily available boil and bite not only kept him safe but allowed him to play in the game. Why are the bottom teeth not also in the impression? it seems like locking the upper and lower jaws in place could prevent some jaw injuries? Wouldn't biting down on a flat plastic surface dull your lower teeth similarly to grinding your teeth? The point you laud about keeping the wearer from getting a concussion is just as valid for boil and bite mouth guards.

This leads to a higher rate of use by the wearer. This in turn leads to less accidents. Do boil and bite mouth guards work? Yes. Are they less expensive? Yes. Are they as comfortable as a custom made mouth guard? No. Do they fit as well? No. You might as well argue that a Dr Scholl's $15 orthotic insert is going to be just as good as a $200+ custom made orthotic. Please don't confuse your Google search with my license to practice.

What is it made out of?
We use Pro-Form mouthguards and according to the manufacturer they are made of a dual laminated "high energy absorbing EVA vinyls".
