Christmas LIghts 2018

- I decided to venture further into the realm of sequencing RGB pixel lights this Christmas. Waiting until Thanksgiving to start was not the brightest idea ever though...
Here's how I got started. I found a video by Keith Westley, who is one of the primary authors of xLights and absolutely brilliant when it comes to this stuff. Here's a link, and you should absolutely watch this and subscribe to Keith if you have any interest in these lights:
• Its mid November I wan...
I then proceeded to ignore most of his advice :) The end results are not going to get me on The Great Christmas Light Fight show any time soon, but we're having fun with it here in the neighborhood.
Also wanted to give a shout-out to Jeff over at Canispater Christmas. He has some great content on this subject and is definitely worth checking out:

Many thanks to the artist for providing the music:

You must have enjoyed this project combining electronics and wood all in one. My neighbor went all out this year for decorating. He sequenced LED lights (lots of them) to music. The tunes are somehow broadcasts over an FM radio frequency. Sit in the car, crank up the volume, watch the lights with the kids and get into the spirit! Great to see you posting Matt and Merry Christmas.
Thanks Glen! I left out a couple pieces. There's an FM transmitter in the mix here too, as well as a Raspberry PI in between the PC and the light controllers. I talk too much, so I can't show all the good stuff :) .
@@MattHeere Can you do a follow up?
@@justinherman9443 I can. Let me know what it is that you'd like to see more of.
@@MattHeere Wiring would be good. Isn't the ESP32 a 3v device? Did you do a level conversion? How about more regarding FM low power broadcast and sequencing?
@@justinherman9443 Got it. Stay tuned :)
That was awesome Matt. Looking forward to more of your videos. Merry Christmas.
and a MERRY CHRISTMAS to you Matt
Terrible ideas do indeed make great videos, but this was not a terrible idea! LOL. Great to see new content Matt. Cheers! Chris - NI7I
Nice work! Very nice work!
Thanks!
Looks like Josh got kicked out of bed to help! Also, great tip about the magnet!
LOL. He looks like that most of the time. Got his old man's hair (which is why I don't miss it!).
Nice video. How do you make the sequences? That's some completed interaction between different strips.
That's handled by the sequencing software; xLights in my case. You draw a model of your setup in the software, and so then it is aware of the spacial relationship between the different sets of pixels. Really, the team developing that software has done a heck of a good job. None of this would be possible without their efforts.
@@MattHeere Got it. Thank you. Problem with me is half my stuff is pixel-based, the other is 120V stuff controlled by relays. Had to hand code everything myself to get it to work together. I'll see if xLights can handle something like that.
@@MatthewSmith-wh5dr It sure can. Pretty normal to have a mix like that if I understand the tutorial stuff I've been following.
@@MattHeere that's exciting. I'll check it out. Appreciate the video. Nice work.
Crazy awesome. Wish I could do that but not that talented. That is really neat.
P.s. We avoided running over your newspaper at the bottom of the driveway. A suggestion for after the holiday season, put the frames up in your recording studio. Frame the inside of the windows, frame posters, loud paintings, get wall mount guitar hangers, and frame a strat or 2. PARTY ROOM!!!
Great to have you back Matt, been waiting up here in PE, Canada!!! Happy New Year!
Liked the video, and wanted to see the real show. So Me & XYL watched show from bottom of UR driveway at 8pm tonight. NIce show! Impressive range on the TX! XYL likes the funky music performance! Good job!
Thanks Ed!
What do you do for a living? Are you a furniture maker?
Glad to see you back at it on RUclips!
Hey Matt from one Pa.
person to another great job for your fist go at it
Are you running this off 1 ESP? Can this be run using a Particle Proton?
I'm using 3 micro-controllers. One for each set of 4 windows and one for the door + large window above it. The maximum number of pixels/controller is a bit variable depending on your voltage and scene frame rate. I tried this with a photon and had mixed results. There is a library for the E1.31 protocol in the Particle library collection, but the UDP stack kept disconnecting on me. The ESPs have been rock solid.
Thanks Matt!! Now I have some reading to do to figure this stuff out.
That is great. You are using an FM Transmitter to share the music, so it isn't just blasting speakers? What FM Transmitter are you using? And are you using speakers in combination or not?
I do have a transmitter. No speakers, as the house is pretty far back from the road and they'd have to be on blast to be of any use :)
@@MattHeere What transmitter do you use?
@@thrash99er It's a bit of a Frankenstein actually. Some folks are asking about a follow-up, so I'll be sure and include it.
Merry Christmas man..see you next year..;-p
Nice! Run some PK-31 through the lights. Hahaha
