I think I saw somewhere she has a syndrome/disorder where she has intermittent hearing, but she makes a deaf accent really well. Especially since she's the only deaf character on the show we hear speak on a regular basis.
Erin Aulfinger She has Meniere's Disease so at times she has very good hearing and can hear very clearly and other days she may hear as if things are stopped up. Her hearing will decline gradually over the years and she'll be dependent on hearing aids by the time she's 30 (if she's not already using them regularly). I don't know her exact level of hearing but typically those with Meniere's are what I've described above. Some can go years without ever needing hearing aids and some don't even know they have it until they get older.
Thanks for the info! I watched a video of her briefly explaining it a looong time ago and only recently started watching again, so I'd forgotten the name.
This girl on my basketball team is deaf, and once I saw her interpreter I was like that is such an amazing language and I wanted to know how to sign so I can't talk to her cause know one talks to her on my team so I took the time to look sign language up and I finally went up to her after basketball practice and said good practice today and you should have seen her when I signed that to her she was so happy 😊 it made my day and she said thank you you too and I told her see you next practice😊😊 and I can't wait til Monday
That's so awesome, good for you for putting in the effort! I always say that people who aren't hard of hearing can easily learn the language, but those who are hard of hearing can't exactly "learn" to hear and speak English! Great job Mckenzie, you are a good person! :)
I don't care what anyone says, I want to learn how to sign because of this show. There's so much beauty in ASL. I know that to some deaf people this isn't beauty but a way of life. I do not wish to be deaf at all. I simply think it's beautiful how expressive you have to be in order to show the tone in your voice. It's beautiful and I'm learning how to sign. This show shares the lives of actual deaf men and women, nothing glamorous about it. We need more shows with diversity within the scirpt/plot. I love this show so much!
It is totally beautiful! I love the thought that must have gone into coming up with signs for each word, and how many of them actually look like what they are in real life, like the signs they showed for mosquito and candle and stiletto. I love the sign for 'understand' for this reason, like a little lightbulb popping up.
When i was a baby i lost my hearing just not all the way. I was supposed to have hearing aids too. I never got them. I was tought American sign languag but i forgot most of it. This show is teaching me sign language again.
Ashley Keller Okay. I understand how you felt about that however it's so great that they learn American Sign language. They shared how they feel about their experience of ASL. That's why Danielle Turchiano recorded this video.
Erika T. No, actually the actress who plays Daphne knew sign language before. Because she's hard of hearing and she learned incase she loses her hearing fully.
Katie, who plays Daphne, a lot of her family members are actually deaf and have the same condition as her (menieres disease) so she was raised with both languages. She is currently hard of hearing, but will eventually fully lose it. It also had loads of other symptoms, vertigo being one of them.
Most the hearing actors learned just for the show! the condition that made Regina stop signing in the show is a real condition the actress got due to learning to sign for the show, due to repetitive motions of rehearsing lines over and over.
There was an episode where they were in a parallel world where the girls were never switched. Daphne spoke clearly, and that's when I knew she wasn't fully deaf.
I have a story to tell. When I was baby I was born deaf and when they actually found out when I was 2 so I didn't start learning signs till I was 8 years old. I kinda went through what dauphine went through when she was telling bay about what happen in the 3rd grade on switched at birth so I went to a deaf school and I think that Sign Language is the most beautiful thing in the world to ever learn and its really easy to!!!
My husband's parents had just the idea, when my husband went to school, that he ONLY learned to talk. While he speaks very well, his hearing is almost totally gone now (I think they did a disservice to him not allowing him to sign...even tho he picked up alot) Sign is a beautiful thing to watch and the kids today are learning to talk AND sign....bilingual...how many of us can say that!!!!
I hear ya. My speech was fine until I turned 1-2 yrs of age and my speech became incomplete and or inaudible. Drs. discovered my left ear drum was perforated thus making me hard of hearing. I had to get surgery to fix it, and even after I still had to go to speech therapy class Which was during school so i understand exactly how daphne felt with kids looking at you weird. I had to also learn sign language and Brielle as apart of speech and audiology classes. Although I am older and hearing is fine, it has been a while since I signed So I teach my kids and husband sign language when I can. Such a beautiful lanaguage. My professor in college would have me do the test for his students learning sign language and they always said " your faces are soooo expressive as if you were really deaf"...oh but if only they knew.
It IS really important...It was never offered as a course in my school which was sad...but thanks to the show (and RUclips), I am learning, brushing up, and getting better with my ASL :) I have to modify most signs cuz I have use of only my left hand, though.
why doesn't Emmett ever get interviewed?? I mean this is an asl show yet they only interview the people that can here? yes I know Katie is hard of heard but what about the characters that are Deaf
Sami Johnson Scroll down, I have interviewed Sean Berdy in the past. On the day I was on set to shoot this ASL video, though, he was not working so I could not talk to him then.
I love Bay so much. I love how she's so cute and funny in real life as well as the show. She has a bit of sass and sarcasm and it's super cute. "Right, right?" I love her facial expressions and just overall she was my favorite character from the start.
This show really made me want to restart sign language learning!! I took a class like 25 years ago but I was able to recognize some of it from watching!!
I really wish we could have a show like this in the UK. I love learning BSL and a show similar to this would help people to recognise that this is a language that needs to be noticed and understood. There is so much stigma surrounding BSL in the UK and it saddens me because if it wasn't for shows like this, it wouldn't get the attention it deserves. A show like this would benefit my family a lot, especially my sister who is profoundly deaf and totally reliant on BSL because it would help her to understand that our situation at home is not totally unique. I applaud ABC for coming up with this show and I look forward to checking it out.
I drive 4 Deaf Ed. kids from a rural area to a school where Deaf Ed is offered., and then stay all day as an aide. I had NO idea that Katie was NOT deaf! My husband has lost almost all his hearing, so I understand her character. She does her part VERY WELL. I work with 2 of the 3rd graders who can hear, so they are ahead of me signing and give me a hard time if I mess up....But I am slowly picking it up and am sooo much better than this time last year. I LOVE the mosquito sign...I will amaze and impress the kids tomorrow...Thanks for the video....
If you guys are interested in learning ASL, take action! Rochelle Barrow has awesome ASL videos and so does ASL Anissa. In addition, there are ASL song tutorials of almost all of your favorite songs. Learning your favorite song in ASL is a fun and cool way to be exposed to a lot of vocab.
I've watched switched at birth so many times and I learned how to sign things through it and before this I didn't know a single bit of ASL but I learned watching this.. now I can actually carry on a full conversation with someone who is deaf or hard of hearing.. plus I love knowing sign language in general.. it's such an amazing language
I had an ear infection was deaf in one ear for a few weeks. Honest to god it was great! I could tune out the world sometimes. I'm just finishing season 3 on netflix! Thanks made me wanna actually learn to sign.
I love ASL and I am learning everything I can. I love watching switched at birth and seeing all the signs and most of all I love sean berdy. My dream is to one day meet him. That would be so awesome! He is my favorite character in the show. GO SEAN BERDY!!!!!!!!!!!
She's sort-of-deaf... She got Ménière's disease when she was 17 (she wasn't born deaf so she doesn't have the deaf people accent, she just acts so on the show) which makes her completely deaf on some days but on other days she could also hear slightly and sometimes she can hear clearly but it varies from day to day.. hasn't anyone ever noticed her AMAZING laugh?? it's so loud an infectious!!
incandescent silver It's actually really really hard to say things in a deaf "accent" I've been hard of hearing since birth and I had to work so hard to not have that kind of accent, but now I can't do it, whenever I try, I always sound more like Stitch from Lilo and Stitch. But good on her for being an amazing actress, her sign language is so fluent (coming from someone who does sign language), you'd think that she was born deaf or something along those lines.
incandescent silver Errr. You do know that it caused deafness. Anyone can go deaf in their time of life. So to say a "deaf people accent" is actually quite offending. What, they can't talk? Umm.. Do research. Understand the culture and everything before you even go talking about accents..
I actually do know the culture more than you realize, I grew up in the deaf culture, I'm hard of hearing and I grew up knowing ASL and my parents and I know people who are deaf, so FYI, I do know my stuff, and I don't need to do the research because I'm part of it, So do NOT tell me what to do when it comes to me knowing about stuff, it is a fact that people who have hearing loss, in fact do have an accent, and it's not a bad thing, it's just part of who we are. So you can back off about knowing everything about the deaf culture. Deaf people can talk, and they are pretty dang awesome, I'd far rather be deaf than hard of hearing or hearing. I lost my hearing when I was born, and I know that anybody can lose their hearing at any point in their life. Maybe you need to learn a little more about someone before you go making judgements on what they say.
incandescent silver Oh no, it's totally okay, what you said is totally true, She won't have a deaf "accent" because she wasn't born with it, know what I mean? No, no, I didn't mean what I said towards you, it was towards ActualReality86 and what she said about me needing to research. I'm so happy though, that you're so interested in using ASL, I encourage you to take some ASL classes if there are any in your area, it's really neat to learn from what I've heard (I've known it since birth, so I don't knwo any different) it really is a beautiful language, I think people on RUclips have also put up videos of lessons in ASL, maybe give those a try? Maybe a good first step as opposed to diving head first into a class. I don't know but good luck all the same!
Also forgot to add in my previous post that a good lot of Deaf people prefer ASL over PSE; you see PSE more in hearing people who have learned it and find it easier because the sentences are signed closely to how they would be spoken.
She is diagnoses with Menieres disease. I love Switched at Birth, how Daphne and Bay really didn`t like eachother in season 1, but started to get friends at season 2. I had one deaf friend when I was growing up, but I`ve never really use it any more. I love to get to learn it agian:-)
I like learning new things so i remember in school one day my friends and i started talking in sign language cause we like speaking in it was fun but one of the teachers said to stop but it wasnt like we were talking to her and it was at lunch but yea i think its beautiful :) oh and i get better everyday
im currently watching this series and once i found out that i could learn it pn ykutune thats all i could do im pretty good sonce ive only been doing it for 2 days some of my knowledge of asl from the show and others from youtube but its fun and a beautiful way to speak and its amazing
well, I m hard of hearing but grew up in deaf family so buillgual language is my advantage but what disadvantage about hard of people is they may speak really well and some with accent (deaf people will view us "hearing" while hearing people will wonder hard of hearing people speak so well and expect us to understand every words they are saying which is not true, I m better with one at a time conversation. Katie from switch at birth make it sounds like she doesn't need to rely on interpreters or understand when people argue all at once and she joined in conversation which is not reality :-) I heard she is hearing loss so I can tell by her sign language is not really deaf but at least she is learning it pretty well. Emmett *Sean * is the first of the most beautiful ASL i ve seen for being deaf actor (Travis as well!) keep it up guys!
I absolutely died when I saw the sign for mosquito I seriously did not expect that to be the sign for that particular word mind blown and interesting to see how so many words in ASL relate to what they actually are
I missed SaB during its initial run and have been binge-watching episodes after work. I know Katie Le Cleric is married, but every time Katie/Daphne smiles or laughs, I fall in love.
I see that in the comments a lot of people use the lowercase version of the word "deaf" it is actually used with a upper case when you are referring to a Deaf individual or the community as well as the culture. Lowercase D in the word deaf is used for the medical terminology. Used by doctors and nurses to refer to the medical condition.
I've never watched SaB but the second woman said the word "beautiful" and I was reminded of the deaf girl in the movie Miracle on 34th Street who Richard Attenborough surprised with ASL and she wasn't acting, she was really deaf and really didn't know that Santa would sign to her.
omg. some of the first things I learned in sight language (I have a friend who's family is deaf and they sign english and another signs asl so I learned and learning both) were "I can't talk" "thank you " "your welcome" and alot of random words that u can throw into sentences
I didn't know that Vanessa and Laura are sisters! But now I see it they kinda have the same features. There's so much to this show that I didn't know! Like how Adriana is in Jane The Virgin!!
And Vanessa played a few episodes in Grey's Anatomy! Oh, and Liam and Chef Jeff are also in Grey's, haha. aannnddd I think most people know this but Lea Thompson (Kathryn) was in Back to the future! so fun finding the actors in various show/movies without meaning to xD
I know that this show aired the same time I was taking asl 1 and 2 so it was great for reference points in hs. My only problem in asl was always reading asl from others.
ASL is a little bit different in different parts of America. It's never something too big of a difference but it's kind of like how people have northern, southern, midwestern, etc accents.
Yeah in my ASL I class, our book had signs California style so our teacher had to teach us the signs that are different in San Antonio since there are no ASL books San Antonio style. But you're right it's not that much of a difference. :) Still love learning as much ASL as I can!
What really inspired me was when Daphne was in the hospital and there was a patient (Daphnes friend) who was deaf, but there wasnt a translator in that night. If Daphne wasnt there the nurse would have given her medicine that would have killed her.
I love all of u guys and Bay I can see why u choose Emmett he is cute😘. Pls make more episodes I want to know what happens next with Bay taking the blame for Daphne
Wonderful opportunity for you to have to make this video, however... I am looking for the Deaf actors though? You know... the native signers? The ones who haven't just learned from an ASL coach on the set and actually know ASL instead of the PSE code they are producing here... yeah... just saying.
the reason why I'm interested to learn sign language is bc of this
Agreed! I find this show inspiration in that department.
I love Switched at Birth for well one, the show, and two because I'm currently learning ASL and I guess this show is a great way to learn new vocab.
I know sign language all my parents r deaf
Me 2
jermaine bryant "All your parents?" You have more than 2....?
OMG katies real voice is soooooo weird!! She is so good at playing deaf.
I think I saw somewhere she has a syndrome/disorder where she has intermittent hearing, but she makes a deaf accent really well. Especially since she's the only deaf character on the show we hear speak on a regular basis.

If you look up Ménière's disease on RUclips you can see some in depth medical videos about it. It's really interesting actually
IfYou'reABird I'mABird I'm Hard of hearing/deaf,I've been wearing hear aids for 10 years,I May do have a Deaf accent

That's amazing

Daphne just blew my mind.
This show is the reason im learning ASL XD
Manuel Valencia Also same 😂
Manuel Valencia same :P
sameeee :)
Manuel Valencia same
Manuel Valencia me too
It's so weird hearing daphney's real voice! What a great actor
Faking a deaf accent is actually pretty offensive.
@@FutureBereaAlumn get over it
My question is why they didn't ask the Deaf actors of the show since it is their language. I'm disappointed. :(
Katie is deaf
Ashley Keller These were the only actors working on the day I was on set to shoot this video.
@caz no, Katie is hearing not hard of hearing nor deaf too.
Ashley Keller Okay. I understand how you felt about that however it's so great that they learn American Sign language. They shared how they feel about their experience of ASL. That's why Danielle Turchiano recorded this video.
+Ashley Keller Emmet is actually deaf and I'm pretty sure that his mother is too.
Vanessa Marano learned sign language just for her role? That's some dedication man.
Jasmina Malowanyj daphne too

I think he is really def
+Valeria Sanchez Ochoa and?...
+Sami Johnson It's kind of different to ask what your 'favorite words' are in a language you're learning versus your first language.
He needs an interpreter to be interviewed so sometimes he might not be able to have a interpreter. Or he might not want to.
I love Bay so much.
I love how she's so cute and funny in real life as well as the show.
She has a bit of sass and sarcasm and it's super cute.
"Right, right?"
I love her facial expressions and just overall she was my favorite character from the start.
Who was the girl in the red shirt? :)
Same
This show really made me want to restart sign language learning!! I took a class like 25 years ago but I was able to recognize some of it from watching!!
My favorite sign right now is winter. As far as I know, you make the letter "w" with both hands and sort of shiver your hands. It looks adorable.
I just randomly clicked on this show and I thought it was AMAZING
I still think that they should teach a few words in the end of every episode, the same way that the show Criminal Minds says those incredible quotes.
Criminal Minds 😫🙌🏻

I love this. I find it so awesome that I used to watch this and be so intrigued. Now I'm an ASL interpreting student and it's so interesting to see.
I love it when Bay says "ok"
I adore bay, she is so cute
Switched at Birth is such an inspiring show. And everyone is an amazing actor!
People will literally dislike ANYTHING, won't they?
they are robots
bay was my fav in this vid :) she is actually herself even the way she looks around shes basically not acting. she seems so sweet
Man these people basically play themselves (personality wise). I love these actors
I had an ear infection was deaf in one ear for a few weeks. Honest to god it was great! I could tune out the world sometimes. I'm just finishing season 3 on netflix! Thanks made me wanna actually learn to sign.

Bay's actress referenced the "learning the sign for love scene"! All the feels! #Bemmett
Who did NOT know Katie Leclerc WASN'T deaf?
She's sort-of-deaf... I'm Pretty Good Signing ASL like The 'Switched at Birth' castmates and Oscar Winning Deaf Girl Marlee Matlin even in Movie Theatre Concession Stands
I want more movie switched at birth i miss them love it good..
I think that it is so cool that they have to learn ASL for this show it is one of my favorite tv shows.

im currently watching this series and once i found out that i could learn it pn ykutune thats all i could do im pretty good sonce ive only been doing it for 2 days some of my knowledge of asl from the show and others from youtube but its fun and a beautiful way to speak and its amazing
I've learned a lot of ASL language, But I loved this video how "Switched at Birth" shared some of this..
Destiny cool buy how youtabe
I have always wanted a deaf friend so I get to know the language and I'm so happy I met her
well, I m hard of hearing but grew up in deaf family so buillgual language is my advantage but what disadvantage about hard of people is they may speak really well and some with accent (deaf people will view us "hearing" while hearing people will wonder hard of hearing people speak so well and expect us to understand every words they are saying which is not true, I m better with one at a time conversation.
I REALLY love this Series I miss it
Loved it! Thanks for sharing! One of my favorite shows!
They should make more seasons of switched at birth please i love it
the show ended sadly, it won't have anymore seasons
I love Katies story at the end! lol She's so much fun!
I love this show it got me really interested in signing
I love this show it encouraged me to learn sign language
I don’t watch the He shown but some of the clips help me better understand the language. I’ve been learning for two years
I see that in the comments a lot of people use the lowercase version of the word "deaf" it is actually used with a upper case when you are referring to a Deaf individual or the community as well as the culture.
The show is the reason I started to Learn ASL
I love to sign "with" because I love the sound it makes xD
omg. some of the first things I learned in sight language (I have a friend who's family is deaf and they sign english and another signs asl so I learned and learning both) were "I can't talk" "thank you " "your welcome" and alot of random words that u can throw into sentences
I AM WATCHING SWITCHED AT BIRTH I LOVE THIS SHOW!!!!!
There is something about Katie's voice that sounds so soothing :)
I love all the cast they're amazing.
hearing kate talk like that is scaring me slightly. I'm not used to it and NEVER expected it
okay but the actual actors seem so sweet wow awe 😭
Omg Katie's ending story was everythinggggg
I'm in love with swiched at birth
Same
I'm addicted
I love ASL. I know very few words, but I'm slowly practicing and learning.
me to
I didn't know that Vanessa and Laura are sisters!
@@AshesFeu Omg! I didn't know that 😂
Emmett's mom is deaf in real life fun fact
so is Emmett
So is Daphne. And Travis
+Koala Farts well, Katie Leclerc and Ryan Lane
Daphne is hard of hearing not actually deaf
So is emmett...
I know that this show aired the same time I was taking asl 1 and 2 so it was great for reference points in hs.
My only problem in asl was always reading asl from others.
Her laugh at the end though. Love it
ASL is a little bit different in different parts of America.
I have Texas style
I never thought about that. Of course, I developed a sizable vocabulary before I ever did.
This is why me and my friends got into ASL now me and my friend always talk in class
Constance seems like the sweetest person!!
I REALLY NED TO LEARN MORE
yeah it would really come in HANDY if you NEDED it
Leigh Daniels lol
I love her sentence she made about the hot summer night
I don't see how Katie fakes the deaf accent so well!
she has a device for her mouth that helps
plus she has deaf family members
What type of device is this? :)
Pop is one of the most fun words to sign
This was the best show
2:18-2:25-- lol *giggles* ...so funny! :D
I love Katie so much!
What really inspired me was when Daphne was in the hospital and there was a patient (Daphnes friend) who was deaf, but there wasnt a translator in that night. If Daphne wasnt there the nurse would have given her medicine that would have killed her.
Katie has such a pretty voice omggg
I love Switch at Birth Show!!!
I really want to learn sign language. It would be a really experience for me.
Oh my gracious they’re all adorable.
You could also put the rounded fingers of the "f" sign on your hand then smack you hand for mosquito
I love all of u guys and Bay I can see why u choose Emmett he is cute😘. Pls make more episodes I want to know what happens next with Bay taking the blame for Daphne
Love it! All of you are great!
I love this show sm
This show encouraged me to want to learn sign language
Wonderful opportunity for you to have to make this video, however... I am looking for the Deaf actors though? You know... the native signers? The ones who haven't just learned from an ASL coach on the set and actually know ASL instead of the PSE code they are producing here... yeah... just saying.
Katie Leclerc is fluent in sign language, and did not learn it on the set, you can guess that quite easily in the video.
Angharad Frost Definately, and she mimics a good Deaf accent as well.
Susan W. Katie is hard of hearing, with hard of hearing family, so she has been studying ASL for a long time :)
Emmett in switched at birth
she's a CODA. Do you know anything ?^^^^^^^
im actually learning sign language because of this show
