    This is such a good looking and thoughtful build. I really appreciate the experience informed packing decisions, such as implimenting multiple dry bags and a harness-based packing system(s), as well as the long-distance comfort-based decisions like the unique handlebar and the 2.6 tires. I am a mountain biker wondering about getting into bikepacking, so i also apprreciate you recommending a couple specific products.

    Lots of good ideas here. Thank you. I love all your bikepacking videos. From my learning, on my own bikepacking setup, I think your advice on where to pack different items is the best part of your videos. I have a second bottle cage on the non-drive-side of my rear stays, and your comment in the video about it making it harder when you lay the bike down really rings true to me. I may even remove mine.

    I am glad I saw this video because in another one I suggested you guys to get oval chainring but it looks like you beat me to the punch. Nice set up for the bike. The only thing I would personally try to add or change is the fork. You can choose one with no more than 120mm and one you can lock for the times you don’t need it. Also, try the WTB saddles, they are great and come in a wide variety of ways to make the ride more comfortable to you. 🤙

    I just picked up a Breezer Thunder a couple months ago. Checks off most of the similar attributes that this Salsa Fargo has. Couldn't pass up the deal as the whole bike was cheaper than a Fargo frame. For now i'll just accumulate gear and enjoy the adventures. I like the idea of a small bungee to secure the top of the water bottle.

    You have made a good choice. I have a Salsa Fargo from 2011. Quick release wheels and no frame link for fitting a drive belt. I transferred parts from a 2008 MTB onto the Fargo frame. My frame has the same advantages you speak of. Ability to run wide tyres gives a real go-anywhere capability.
    Things that are different: 3x9 drivetrain gives bigger range and faster downshifting. And the front derailleur is one of few parts never replaced. Hydraulic disk brakes are the way to go. Better performance, extremely reliable and low maintenance. And in extremis you have two of them and they are easy to replace. (Compare that with a gearbox). Flat bars are better for control and simplicity. Schrader valves are more robust and simpler that presta.

    Henry, I enjoyed this. I have the Fargo with the wood chipper bars and have found the Salsa dry bag (version pre bleed valve) is too large and too difficult to compress to fit between the bars to my liking. A compression sack with a garbage bag linner has worked best. This is to ask if you feel the sea to summit Big River bag is waterproof and a good option over compression sack + garbage bag liner I have been using? Much appreciated

    • @HenryMerk
      @HenryMerk  2 года назад +1

      I never weighted the bike to be honest, I only know that it's heavy to lift when fully loaded.
      On that note, I think every kilo makes a noticeable difference on hikeabikes and such... in my view there are two sides of luxury: bringing more things (like a chair for example) for comfort and so on, that's luxury...or bringing less items to have it easier while cycling in the mountains or hikeabikes or in the general handling, that's also luxury... I prefer the latter

    Schöne Vorstellung deines Rads :) Wie empfindest du die Geometrie in Verbindung mit einem flatbar? Das Fargo ist ja eigentlich als dropbar Rad konzipiert...
    Spannend finde ich die Möglichkeit, einen Riemen zu verbauen und die optionalen Rohloff spezifischen Ausfallenden was es ja möglich macht einen sehr wartungsarmen Antriebsstrang zu haben. Gerade auch zum Ganzjahrespendeln finde ich das eine spannende Option.
    Denkst du, das Rad wäre auch geeignet als Pendel- UND Tourenrad mit etwas weniger aggressiven Reifen? Breite Reifen sind immer gut. Oder zumindest die Option dazu.

    • @HenryMerk
      @HenryMerk  2 года назад

      Die Geometrie ist für mich sehr angenehm, ich konnte auf jedem Untergrund fahren und dabei noch die Landschaft genießen ohne körperliche Beschwerden gehabt zu haben.
      Das Rad kommt ja sogar aus dem Geschäft mit 2.2 breiten Reifen, das geht schon. Schmaler würde ich jedoch nicht gehen, da verliert das Fahrrad seinen Charakter.
