Antiques are a like lot art. I see a lot of art and antiquities I think are awesome, but experience has taught me over the years- unless I know exactly where I am going to put it before I buy it, I have to pass. I've purchased too many things that I personally loved and ended up sitting in a holding place for years because I never found a proper home for it.
People dont have the money to spend on objects that serve no function other than decoration. Nowadays, those with cash to spare only buy high-end stuff that will gain in value. Everything is viewed as an investment nowadays and very few average folks have money to invest. It's a sign of the times.
Pete.... the future awaits you up in Door County. I would study the area intimately, there's a need for something up there. Otherwise I would apply for a dispensary license, at least be one of the first to submit your application. Worry about the money later. Maybe a Headshop, or a Hot Dog stand.
When you mentioned Milo I had to think to myself that how lucky are you to have Milo who was a sweetheart and then get Honey who may be even sweeter. The disposition of the two cats… amazing!
We're in the middle of a cost of living crisis. People can't afford to buy special plates. Putting food on the table and paying bills are peoples priority at the moment.
Speaking as an antiques dealer, most of my friends who are storefront must work on a different profit margin. Where I am happy with a 100% profit flip within 30 days, my friends work on 700% in their store to make up costs. We make deals between ourselves on what we buy. I let him buy a deal, and he let's me have one. Cool to watch this video, I just bought of those massage seats for my back, 100 CAD new. In your antique room, you have a wheelchair like the one in my project room, and you have a big trunk, like the one I am currently working on. Finding a buyer for those will take me a year. I changed to buying things others want, more than what catches my eye or interest. I buy some things for my interest only now, whereas everything had a price before. It has changed in the past 10 years. Love your channel.
Your number plates were issued in the UK between August 1st 1970 and July 31st 1971. A lot of SUVs such as Land Rovers etc still use a square plate on the rear. HGVs can also have square number plates on their trailers. Our plates are still white on the front and yellow on the back.
The number plates Pete are white on the front and yellow on the rear gb plates are still the same, not necessarily square in the rear lots of them are same shape on front and back all depends on what car they came off, those plates became legal in gb in 1973 before that they where black and silver.
Very interesting about the license plates. I did not know about this before. Great find and a good number too, to my eye - more interesting/appealing than other possible combinations. 👍 oh wow what a spectacular gift for Ruby and Honey got some treats too. And even you guys too. Wow What a beautiful gift!So kind. 💕👍
UK plates are white at the front and yellow at the rear and this colour scheme was introduced in 1973, before then they were black with white or silver letters, however this is an old style suffix J plate was from 1970 so the plate isn't correct for the period. I expect someone had a Japanese imported Honda CRX from the 1980s, bought this numberplate from the DVLA and and stuck it on the car, UK cars don't have the square format, square rear plates are a Japanese or Asian thing. The other possibility is a motorbike but only very early bikes had front number plates fitted vertically on their front mudguard but and they were stopped due to them being dangerous, there were not this car style, they were typically rounded to fit the profile of the mudguard.
Over the years of watching your videos its amazing how many people appear to wander off just as you are trying to negotiate, you can almost predict that as soon as you ask certain questions about an item or price they walk off and wont even look at you.....people are so funny :)
That back room has a lot of potential. For example: - It could showcase cool midcentury modern design (furniture, lamps, pictures, knickknacks, etc.) - It could display certain eras in chronological order from the 20's to the 60's or 70's (So, a 20's Art Deco area, a World War II era section, a 50's section, etc.). - It could display man cave/media room items or antiques (old film projectors, film cannisters/reels, movie posters, old theatre seating, vintage stereo equipment, VCR's, DVD players/Blu-ray players, various automotive or pop culture signs or specific signs related to movie theatres or home theatres, etc. - One could even rotate usage of the space by season, so if for example, it was summer and camping season, why not put all of the camping/fishing/hunting gear in one place? Or Christmas items all together for the winter or grouping large collections together that relate to each other in some logical way, etc. The possibilities are endless, so good luck, Peter. :)
When you own a retail store you wsnt to make as much per sqft as possible. If they've been there that long I'd get rid of then for pennies over what I paid and get something in that will sell and turnover.
Things aren't moving in the back room, so the solution is to forget about trying to sell anything there and just fill it with weird interesting stuff. Maybe change the sign to Trading Post and Museum?
You should build a cage in the window so rubie can go outside and maybe start buying old motorcycle and car related items thats were the money is nowadays
Have you thought about doing Whatnot?. You can start an item higher. They usually start at $1.00 or higher. People would to come to that auction. Just a thought.
Expand your record department. Everyone loves music. Be the place to go in your area for vinyl and CD’s. It just may surprise you. Specialize and focus one item in that room that will make you $$$. Take the leap.

Hey Pete, seems like the “Hater’s” are still out there. As with folks who want to run your shop when they don’t have, or had a failed attempt themselves. Full of BS & only opinions(just like a$$holes & everybody’s got one). You have in mind what you want to do, just got to make it work. Glad you’re doing the post cards… People want to see if theirs are there & the different types. You should rig up a quick toggle switch to make Seymour to drop while you’re standing. Just random thoughts from a loyal fan. Keep up your great content & screw the HATER’S!
My parents are from Holland. My Father came to Canada in the late 1950's and his pen pail at the time was my Mother who came to Canada in the early 1960's. I was born in Canada in 1969. I have been searching for a Netherlands 1969 Automotive License plate. They are not easy to come by in good shape. I just mentioned this as Pete was showing off the front and rear plates from England. The Colman stove and light brings back a lot of memories. When I was a wee lad we used to go camping all the time. Many meals were made on the Colman Stove.
That was a neat trumpet, if I was I was in your store I could of played note or 2 for you. I still have my old trumpet from when I was in school. I haven't played a trumpet in years, though. Over time a trumpet player has to develop the muscles around the lips to play it properly. My trumpet is about 50 years old now. 😊
