Our church choir had a tradition of singing this every year for the Christmas program. But not this year, because of Covid. Listening to it is beautiful, but bittersweet. Here's hoping the choirs can sing again next year.
I first heard this years ago. I was so dumbstruck I stopped dead in my tracks. Truly one of the most stunning pieces of Christmas choral music ever done.
Christmas of 2023 is going to be a little bit bittersweet for me on this point. I lost my brother only a few days ago from the 10th of December. This carol is going to have special significance for me!
British Choral music is a phenomenon, in itself, in that there is such an ongoing cache of young, strong Youth voices to sing the soprano and alto parts. In this piece by John Rutter, he uses the beauty of treble voices to a high degree. Brings tears to one's eyes ... the pure, perfect pitch, and God-given gift of outstanding tone. Superb.
I agree with what you say, but The Cambridge Singers are all adults. However the sopranos produce a very pure sound which can easily be mistaken for trebles.
It's the British college chapel system. They train them well, and consistently. We in the US have nothing like it - with the exception of St Thomas Church, NYC and a couple of other churches. It's a pity.
One of my absolute favorite Christmas songs. We sang this in my high school women's choir and we always struggled to keep it together singing it bc it's so beautiful. Our choir director used to cry on stage conducting us. Miss that man! Good memories. Merry Christmas all.
This song has been playing In my head the last 2 days! In college our choir sand this for a candle light service. I keep thinking of it so I had to come listen to it again!
The Disney choir performs this song during the Candlelight Processional and I had never heard it before I joined the choir. It's now my favourite Christmas carol.
Like all the songs in this collection, this selection evokes all the quiet reverence of that awesome event that happened so long ago: God enfleshes Himself and enters His creation. Glory to God!
I had the very good fortune to have sung many Rutter choral works over the years! His Christmas carols bring such heartwarming feelings and strike the right chords for welcoming another season of Joy.
This is such a special song to me and my family. Like Mary Murphy commented below, it moves me to tears. This song has become a Christmas tradition in my family. My sisters and I, along with several cousins, attended the same high school (Mountain View High School in Mesa, Arizona) where this song has been sung by all choirs every year for the past few decades. We loved it so much that we carried on the tradition in our own family where we sing it together, sisters and cousins, every Christmas Eve. It is the highlight of the night (well, besides Santa's visit).
How do you capture the wind on the water? How do you count all the stars in the sky? How can you measure the love of a mother Or how can you write down a baby's first cry? Candlelight, angel light, firelight and star-glow Shine on his cradle till breaking of dawn Silent night, holy night, all is calm and all is bright Angels are singing; the Christ child is born Shepherds and wise men will kneel and adore him Seraphim round him their vigil will keep Nations proclaim him their Lord and their Saviour But Mary will hold him and sing him to sleep Candlelight, angel light, firelight and star-glow Shine on his cradle till breaking of dawn Silent night, holy night, all is calm and all is bright Angels are singing; the Christ child is born
Thank you, expect the line is “Gloria, Gloria, in excelsis deo, Angels are singing: the Christ child is born”. It’s okay, I thought it was silent night at first too
Find Him at Bethlehem, laid in a manger; Christ our Redeemer, asleep in the hay. Godhead incarnate and hope of salvation, A Child with his Mother that first Christmas Day.
I start tearing up just at the mention of this song, before the first notes are played. Not sure how one can write a song like this without being a believer, but Rutter does it every time. What a talent.
This is one of the most beauuutiful Christmas songs I have ever heard! It moved my heart to tears. My husband and I just heard it for the first time sung by Neil Diamond on the Christmas channel while we had dinner, and we had to stop and just listen. This version is even more amazing! We are cantors for our Church, and can hardly wait to sing it there! Thank you, John Rutter.
This was commissioned by my childhood parish, The Church of the Assumption, Pittsburgh, PA. Unfortunately I was never allowed to sing in the church growing up, it was a boys and men choir only back then. But this piece became a regular at my new parish after moving away from PA. It always brought a tear to read the dedication to the church of the Assumption every time had the opportunity to sing it.

Lagu Natal yang sangaat indah... Setiap tahun paduan suara gereja kami selalu menyanyikannya dan Natal jadi terasa syahdu dan terasa damai dalam hati.... Terima kasih, Pak John Rutter.
This song is really beautiful! My choir sang it during one of our last performances. Part of the arrangment is original. Write this in the search. You're going to love it for sure! Corale Novarmonia - Candlelight Carol (J. Rutter)
First time I heard this was while performing with the Mira Costa College Symphony Orchestra. We only had one rehearsal with the choir before the concert proper, and there was no bassoon part, either, so I was just listening to the strings in front of me and the choir directly behind me; I was totally unprepared. As an aside, it was an interesting experience to play under a choir director. We didn't speak *quite* the same language. I remember that we also played the theme from Home Alone, and the director kept telling the orchestra that we needed "more syrup". Never did fully understand what she meant by that.
Very pretty, as Rutter’s carols are, but if you know his other ones it’s so predictable. Almost every musical phrase can be found in one or other of them.Still, for someone new to his music it’s a good introduction, and a good sing.
Whadda twit! There's always at least one. I know what you mean, this bittersweetness, when you long so much to sing in your choir. Best wishes from Germany.
I'm sorry you didn't get to sing. :( That sucks. Hopefully you do this year.
Lol same, except we sang it anyway, did you sing it this year?
Just make sure y'all wear a mask while singing, you'll be fine! 😷🗣️🎶🦠👎🏼
Did you ever re-start the grand tradition?
I first heard this years ago. I was so dumbstruck I stopped dead in my tracks. Truly one of the most stunning pieces of Christmas choral music ever done.
I felt the same way..I asked our organist immediately who the composer was as I had not such a melody before.
Christmas of 2023 is going to be a little bit bittersweet for me on this point. I lost my brother only a few days ago from the 10th of December. This carol is going to have special significance for me!
My condolences. I only have one brother left.
I heard this for the first time today. It is stunning.

@@patriciayeiser6405 you should hear our choir in San Luis Obispo, CA. We may be small but we are mighty!
I agree, very moving. Missing my choir days since all this nonsense started.

Ein wunderbares Werk des Meisters Rutter! Ich liebe seine Stücke sehr. Sie sind so warm und harmonisch. Balsam für die Seele.
A wonderful work by the master Rutter. I really love his pieces. They are so warm and harmonious. Salve for the soul.
Beautifully said, Sabine.

Finally singing this gorgeous piece this Christmas as part of our choral concerts. After a year of nothing....it's so wonderful!! :-)

Heavenly, FAR better worship music than today's noise and youth 'entertainment' .
Yes. There is no need for vulgar noise, but people seem to revel in it :(
Singing this song in a concert sounds so good!
