What a nightmare! Sounds more like a penal colony than a settlement.

If you want a more harrowing read there Heather.? May I suggest 'Island of The Lost'. Two crews shipwrecked down there. They had a way worse.

You should visit the Shetland Islands and not run them down. Nice place with great people. there were many Shetlies that moved to New Zealand.
Svalbard has always been on my tourist map there Ben.
