Released in 1986, "The Final Countdown" became an enormous international hit for the band Europe, reaching number one in 25 countries around the world.
In this The Final Countdown guitar lesson series, I will show you how to play all of guitarist John Norum's guitar parts note-for-note, including that killer guitar solo.
Obviously, most of "The Final Countdown" is dominated by that infectious keyboard melody with the guitar relegated to a backing role. There are some cool little riffs going on there though so make sure you check them out. All of the chords and riffs will be taught in the first video lesson.
In the second video lesson I will take you through John Norum's guitar solo note-for-note. There are some really great licks in this solo that can be turned into some nice technique exercises if you wish.
The fast arpeggios that open the solo requires smooth legato and sweep picking. Those two techniques combine to create a very fluid sound. I will show you exactly how to pick this section and the great thing is, once you get the first arpeggio down, the entire sequence is played the same way.
The rest of the solo includes fast alternate picking, whammy bar dips, unison and oblique bends and more. It really is a great 80's era guitar solo in that it contains lots of flashy guitar licks, but the entire solo can still pretty much be hummed throughout. Creating musically yet technically demanding solos was the challenge of many great guitarists back in the 80's shred era, the solo for "The Final Countdown" certainly doesn't disappoint!
Hope you guys enjoy this one! It is really fun to play once you get it all together.

This solo is so timeless, it has zero fat on it, just pure melodic bliss by mr. Norum
This is one of the best solos of all time, in my opinion. I also love the Round and Round guitar solo by Ratt. You’re the best teacher on RUclips.
❤p❤u
Really had to argue with that
@@darrenc8776 I said "one of the best" - my listening list is long and full of great guitar solos: 22 Acacia Avenue, The Prisoner, Wasted Years, Alexander the Great, Hallowed be Thy Name, and The Trooper, all Maiden songs.
Add Freewheel Burning, Screaming for Vengeance by Priest; Balls to the Wall, Fast As A Shark by Accept; Bark at the Moon, Crazy Train, Miracle Man, and Mama, all by Ozzy. So Europe is somewhere in there, amongst these and not necessarily at the top of the list.
I really had to add that in there. It's just a partial list. I didn't include Annihilator, Megadeth, Overkill, WASP, AC/DC or the outro solo on Metallica's Fade to Black, and Kill'em All has a few as well.
😂 brilliant love all those. There are so many unbelievable solos to choose from. I think the solos on Priests pain killer are fantastic.

Tornado of souls
Best guitar solo ever improvised, period. Easy W no diff hands down no further arguments with that.
Its surprisingly easy for how "shreddy" it sounds.
I just came off trying to play EVH's Beat it solo for MJ...and that sounds similarly shreddy...but is waaaaay harder!
Im having trouble with it. Im not very good
This solo is proof that melody is more important than technicality, but if you’re EVH, it’s technically melodic
Interestingly enough, the hardest part, as usual, is the less flashy-more bluesy part. The one at 4:48. That will fuck up your day
lol no kidding! Really struggle to get the timing on it :-D
That's a beautiful tone.
I'll just stick to 7 nation army
I am also learning that one!
😂
People think the hardest part is the sweep picking, he hardest part of the solo is actually the bluesy lick that comes after the first sweep picking stuff...
I really love the way you teach every single step of the solo keep it up
Carl you are Awesome. From Pantera's solos to this epic solo. Just fantastic
That pentatonic rundown in the middle is absolutely magnificent. I've heard it 100's of times and it still gives me the shivers.
Definitely! It's very bluesey. Somewhat reminds me of slash his style.
excelente aula, ninguem ate hoje ensinou tão bem quanto voce! adorei a aula..muito simples vendo voce
Hi ! Carl, just want to say hi ! and thanks so much for all your guitar lessons here in RUclips...Been a fan since (even though I never subscribed to your channel) and been watching some of my favorite songs and solos that you taught like Something by The Beatles, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, etc...I have actually learned and mastered them because of you...I just thought that you're one of the most under appreciated guitar teacher here in youtube...In my own honest opinion, I think that you're better than Marty Schwartz, and everyone else because your tone and licks are more accurate, sounds like the original recording of these songs that you teach...keep up the great work ! Thanks a lot again from the bottom of my heart...
Do you like Marty Schwartz?
Man your the man i tried searching all tabs of this song yours are the easiest to learn great thank you
I was really hoping you had a video for this one so I searched it up anyway and had a big smile to see it there. Thx for the great videos I use them a lot
Awesome!
Everything it rocks.
Love those unison bends.
Sounds kiiiillller!
Very good lesson! You make everything look so easy.
Holy crap, fun way for me to finally learn how to start sweep picking! Thank you!🤘🏼
I think the 2 down picks are correct but what is essential imo is the ever so slight pause after the very 1st downward pluck which allows for that 'gallop'. Secondly imo there should be a flick -action down on the 1st string which allows for a definite hammer on on the 1st string.
Totally correct. Imagine you are picking every note. Which you’re not but this will help the phrase. B B D D F# D . Which gives it that gallop . So John is playing:
single B
single D
F# pull off to D
And it’s tricky to get out of the mode that you’re doing.. good luck
You help me so much, im even learning english
One the most helpful guitar videos I've watched.
You're rock man! Thanks for sharing this tutorial
Quick tip on the arpeggios at the beginning, when he hammers on 10, on the E, DONT, just pick it THEN pull off. It will save you frustration and it sounds just as good
what should i do instead?
Hey guys, for those of you who mastered this solo, I've got a question. I am wondering how did you manage to play it as fast as it should be cuz i've been practicing for a week non stop and my finger placement is perfect however i don't seem to be picking fast enough to achieve the awesome sound, you guys have any tips on how i can improve my speed? thanks.
Those who have the same problem feel free to say so!
+VaporProject first of all ...disappear from here :) this lesson's complete waste of time....all wrong...i mean the arpeggios.not acurate(easier than original i'm afraid).get the guitar pro i suggest and start from the beggining.its pretty easy up to 80% of speed....or even 85(which sound fuckin hilarious anyway)....yeah but the rest (like 15-20%) its your hard work...i'd say good few weeks 45 mins a day:( .but u know ...some people got talent...i dont know you :).i'm on 90% now after over 20 years guitar playing ...it's still tough mate...i'll post it soon ...i know that ...hellllllllll of a solo !.take care
Look up David Escobar's video. The tabs are slightly different from what he plays in his video, but the technique is flawless.
You can alternate pick, or down pick. I prefer down picking, because it is easier for me. But your choice.
I'd also recommend watching Ben eller, he did an in depth picking lesson on it :)
after you can play technical difficulties you will find it easy
This is the kind of pace i like! Great work 👏
Thank you so much. It was really clear teaching. So cool.
You are so good with your teaching steps 👍❤
I love you from Yemen
Bravo man.its so easy to understand how to play..🤘🤘👍👍👍
fantastica Lesson ....Thank you very much
Thank you sir, you are my favourite guitar teacher
excellent lesson, wish i could still play. This sounds great!
You always have fantastic videos!
Great lesson, thanks, Carl!
incredibly simple, so beautiful
Thanks for all the time, I really appreciate ❤🙏
Fantastic Carl many thanks.
Thank u so much Carl, greetings from Colombia!
fantastic teaching tecnique...thanks
Lessons are awesome, the best on youtube. It's be great if you would comment on what key and what scale these solos go over.
Nicely done, Carl!
It's definitely not pure semiquavers (16th notes) in the arpeggiated lick. The original pulloffs are demisemiquavers (32nd notes). Not to take anything away from your actual playing...
So true! Just spent 2 hours on getting the flow for that part. That 32 note really makes a huge difference.
Thank you! I learned it! :D
great lesson 👍👍
Well look at this awesome gem hidden way. Damn! May not be “Liberty” however, it’s an absolute almost do. Thanks so much Carl.
Nice video brother... thanks...from Brazil...🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Awesome dude! BTW, what kind of middle ware do you use for this tone ? I mean stuff like overdrive, distortion, compressor etc
Love your videos. I've been through quite a few and yours seem to be the most detailed and sound the best but just wondering if you would take requests? I've been learning 'The ballad of John Henry' by Joe Bonamassa in standard tuning but I can't figure out the solo from the record or find tabs.
EDIT: This is definitely a great tutorial, thank you for creating great content)
I was wondering that, instead of hammer on 14th fret, why not let the up stroke movement naturally hit the E string after the mini sweep pick? The motion feels natural to me. 2x 16th note sweep, then 2x 32th note with up pick motion + pull off.
Totally right, you have the opening phrasing wrong. Let’s imagine you’re picking every note just for the time values.
It would be like this:
B B D D F# D
John plays
single B
single D
F# pulls off to D
It’s tricky up to speed. But you’ll get there
excellent class thank you very much
This was nice to watch amigo.
great gonna be our latest cover, great tutorial carl
Great vid. Thanks
Muito bom, bem explicado
Thank you buddy rockers shall never die🤘
How do i get the same tone on my line 6 spider IV 15
Love you man
WOW!!! I just hit the like button and it turns into 10K!!!
great one Carl
Hello, how do you know John picks the solo with the two down strokes? I have seen different videos doing the picking differently. The way you do it makes sense so just wondering how John does it. Thanks!
Awesome!!
my pinky went numb after getting the sweeps up to speed.thanks for the great lesson though carl!
Hi Carlos,my name's Carlos from spain,i discovered your channel one year ago,i have to say i love it,you lesson are really easy to learn, any chance to do some songs of Europe like yearsterday's new a súper rock song or devil sings the blues, thanks
Awesome job! Thanks!
In the initial lick, I've found easier to hummer on the 14th, then play that note and pull-off to 10 again (something like 10h14 14p10 instead of just 10h14p10). Yeah, I know it should be easier to play the lick with two pickings instead of three, but I can't get enough speed with the sweep picking. Is that wrong?
You are good teacher.....easy to learn...keep going man....
From Malaysia
Byen Hokage aku pun dari malaysia..selalu tengok video dia ni 😅😅😅
Terbaik nieeeee
Great lesson, could you make a tutorial on powerslave or dominate by morbid angel

Thanks a lot friend 🤗😊
Best tutorial💯🎸🎸🤘
Well explained 👍
4:48 are the hard part hahaha
ikr I expected to spend more time on the intro bits :P But this has me slowed down!
@@esscee96 LMAO i can't get the intro everything else is so easy.. those sweep things are so confusing to me. :D
@@peterdimitrov6214 it's okay it'll come with time and practice :D keep at it. After finally learning it I managed: ruclips.net/video/e5P0C-RLY7I/видео.html
@@peterdimitrov6214 its actually with alternate. John does it and did it that way.
@@madden7732 Not exactly alternate picking but John picks 3 notes then pulls off 1, picks 3 notes then pulls off 1. It's fine to do a 2 string sweep for the first 2 notes because sweeping is actually picking. But it has to be followed with an up-pick because one of the coolest thing about these arpeggios and the overall solo is that staccato/percussive feel. In this video, he's picking just 2 notes and then plays 2 legato notes which removes some of the coolness and uniqueness of the sound.
Also John ends each arpeggio on the B-string note, except for the last G-arpeggio. Here he's not playing any of these last notes. Another way to put it is that each arpeggio shape, John plays the note on the B-string 6 times, here he's playing this note only 5 times and omitting the last note each time.
The trickiest thing about this arpeggio lick is the timing.... It's polyrhythmic and has a 5/4 feel. So the placement of the notes are unintuitive. The B-string note never falls on the beat except for the very first note of each new arpeggio/chord.
Cool man thanks👍
youre the best teacher
Yees you did best tutorial…..❤
Thank you sooo much ☺
Thanks Carl!!
Really Helpful... 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you for that 👍
All-time GREAT solo... did you ever hear his version of Flight Of The Bumblebee? it was on a live concert.
At 4:49 the string in slow motion are pulled down, down, down and pull off but fast you play down, down, up, down. So which is right?
Live the song thank you
สุดยอดครับ ชอบมากครับ
Thank you master
It looks easy but so hard to do that Carl. I have to try harder. Thanks.
I struggled with this solo for a loong ass time
The best lesson on you tube !!!!!!!!!!
Oh, perfect. What amp do you use for this sweet tone?
Nice axe❤
Nice one tutorial master
Wow great.
