    I believe the squeal comes from the wheel flanges rubbing against the side of the rail as they go around corners. If the rails are wet, they might not squeal as the friction will be reduced. Also with the new ties, the spikes are holding the rail really well now, so there is less likely any movement in the rail as the cars put lateral load on the rail causing them too move and the flanges to rub. The low crunching noises comes from the ties compressing and rubbing against what little ballast that might be there as they settle in.

    I was surprised that the squeal was gone thinking it had more to do with the radius of the curve. Maybe not. Glad to see green Freddy again. Thanks for sharing, 👍

    Thanks for the update but sadly another tense moment with the trackage. Who knows how much the switch to Alter may be beyond a simple fix but rather a replacement. It shouldn't surprise one if the next time they go there they will have to use idler cars. Since the derailment on the Curve some factors have come into play such as the actual guage of the rail has been somewhat tightened along with new spikes to hold them in place. So rather than a high-pitched squeal today it almost sounds like driving a flat tire on a rim down the street. As long as the track safely stays in place we can record it as a success. Note the entire group of gondolas is CN family and Shortline cars again while the batch that went to Alter today is mostly from leasing firms. Even this is falling out of any regular cycle. Also a mere five cars for loading @ LP so hopefully they don't run out

    I'm not so sure the squeal is gone; it's usually caused by the solid axels with the inside wheel turning faster than the outside wheel when rounding a significant bend in the rails. It was very quiet today, but the rails are damp and that may have allowed the wheels to slip while going through the S curve. On the next sunny day with a northbound train, we can check it out! Like you said, I hope it's gone too.

    • @erie910

    • @erie910

      That might be an excuse for one crossing. Engineers can be light on the blowing. But not blowing is a safety issue for many, especially when there are no 4-quadrant gates.

    Hey Jason....
    Does that Railroad (ELS) ever do any proactive maintenance on their rails ? I see a lot of reactive efforts (after derailments) but never see any ballast tamping, etc. Just wondering !!!

    • @glennoconnor2980
      @glennoconnor2980 Месяц назад +1

      Probably any VHF FM analog capable scanner would work. There could be some digital radio activity but would the extra expense be justified. Digital radio traffic could also be encrypted. FW yard(s) are mainly, what, BNSF with some UP or CSX activity? Consult RadioReference for you local rail frequencies.

    I've asked this question on other videos of a similar nature, but can anybody tell me of the history of this line. Did the railroad come first and the town gradually developed around it or was the area developed first and the line was built through it? I have a fascination for railroad archeology and how the landscape is altered through the years because of the railroad. I'm also surprised that roadside barriers haven't been installed.

    • @littlewingpsc27
      @littlewingpsc27 Месяц назад +3

      Usually the railroad comes first and the town grows up around it. Otherwise lots of buildings would have to be removed and infrastructure rerouted to get a clean run through town like that.

    • @Joe-d7m6k
      @Joe-d7m6k Месяц назад

      Yes--- and some fresh ballast would not hurt.

    • @Maine_Railfan
      @Maine_Railfan Месяц назад

      Because it’s winter and it’s likely frozen. Come spring time they will likely do a small tie job on that curve and put down a small amount of ballast.

    @vernonslone8627 Месяц назад +3

    I always wondered why trains don't have more trouble in turns because cars have solid axles with no differential action like automobiles do...

    • @littlewingpsc27
      @littlewingpsc27 Месяц назад +5

      They don't have issues because of the shape of the wheel. It isn't just a flat profile it is more cone shaped which allows the wheel to effectively move within the spacing of the rail so going around corners isn't so big a deal. The squeal you hear is usually the wheel flanges rubbing against the side of the rail.

  • @jeanavis1489
    @jeanavis1489 Месяц назад +1

    Maybe the rails still have some type of coating on them from being fixed and once that wears off the squeal will be back.

    Good grief, it doesn’t take that long to repair even those ancient flashers.

    • @erie910
      @erie910 Месяц назад +1

      The flashers themselves haven't changed in decades, except for the use of LED instead of incandescent lighting. There have been substantial improvements to signal control. The ELS might not move to LED signals because of unreliability in cold weather. LED or incandescent--drivers won't pay attention to either!

    • @garydreamweaver
      @garydreamweaver Месяц назад

      @ i never worked or supervised any line that had those amber flashers or the, ‘No Turn On Red,’ in my entire life. Yeah, the LED were a huge improvement, and those came at the end of my tenure. I wasn’t a signal man, so you probably know far more than I, but I did asked to be briefed, when upgrades were happening. I was referring to the changes from the old battery, bond wire systems, to the electronic diode systems, that from my perspective, seemed to be a huge improvement. I remember those batteries dying, which automatically activated the lights and gates, or bond wires breaking, especially in bad weather, which also did the same thing,as a safety precaution. Even crossings, that just had bells, used those old set ups. They too, had to be flagged,when they malfunctioned. Even in the worst weather conditions, it seemed like our crews could get even them back up the same day, or one or two, not weeks.
