    A really good hack for putting the belt back on is to do the smooth pulley last. It slips on easily requiring less muscle required.

    Once again another fine video. At the end, I appreciate how u double check that alternator is charging. Saw the 14 and with a low battery. Recently had a 2013 Accord come in with a dead battery. Almost 3 years old. Replaced battery, checked voltage. It read 12. Suspected bad alternator. Sent the car to the dealer. The Hondas have a dual charging strategy. Light electrical loads, approx 12'volts. Heavy electrical loads 14+. Bought one of the Milwaukee 3/8 electric ratchets. Very happy with it. No air hose!! Maybe u can do a tool review on that. Keep up great work!! And thank u for the extra time and aggravation to keep all in the loop

    Eventually he told me to go ahead when cabs were down from broken, smokin' and squealing belts we had recently replaced.
    I wonder how many places actually take the time to go as far as you do though?

    Those tensioners fail in odd ways too. I've had a few that initially seemed okay but when you took the belt off and ran them thru their stroke you could feel they weren't working smoothly right in the range where they'd be with the belt on. Probably could lube them and work them enough to get back right but in my case it was easier to replace and be done with it.

    For the belt.............get several thin gauge long bungee cords (the kind with cloth outer, not the heavy solid black rubber type). Start the belt around the crank and maybe one more easy to get to pulley, then use the bungee to gently pull the belt off to the side of the vehicle, and hook the bungee to the bottom lip of a fender, or to the lift, etc.If you have used light enough gauge bungees (in series), you can place it onto one pulley or tensioner at a time, and it will stay in place.Your mileage may vary.

    I've had really bad luck with aftermarket reman alternators. I'm at the point now where if I have to do it, I will ask them to pull it out of the box and spin it on the test bench for me. Even though they come with the "tested" tag on them, I've had two different ones with bearings that made noise right out of the box. Not to mention the ones that failed after a few months, etc. I also laughed out loud at your comment about working on vans. That's the truth.

      I bought an AZ Duralast reman alternator 2 years ago and it died after a year and a half. The 2nd one died 8 months later very suddenly and left me stranded before I got to an AZ and had to push it there and do a parking lot replacement (fortunately, it's a Toyota so it's easy) and I'm on my 3rd one now! I'm kicking myself for not buying OEM but I needed one and that's all they carried. Are the Duralast Gold (new) alternators from AZ any better than their remans in your experience? If it goes out again, I want to pay the extra $40 and upgrade. Eric O or anybody else who knows...By the way, I've checked all my grounds and my battery is brand new.

    When those belts go bad and the heat is applied to the pulleys that causes lose of lubricant inside of the pulley i.e. the lubricant boils out according to the manufacturer of the pulley system. They would recommend putting lubricant back into the pulley or could stop turning and cause the loss of other pulleys are even damage the engine.

    The older B vans you mentioned had the engines further back into the cab so you had to remove the doghouse to do alot of stuff. They didn't have tensioners back then either, had to hold a crowbar while tightening.. I stil have one, eventually I have to get into it and replace some of the vacuum lines.. vents/defrost isn't redirecting air from the blower.. Not looking forward to it! Great video though!

    • @geobus3307
      @geobus3307 10 месяцев назад

      Here's a bit of trivia from the three decade production run of one of the B-series van, one of the American auto industries' iconic vehicles. In 1997, the B-series engine/doghouse position was indeed moved slightly forward to expand the interior clearance behind the doghouse. This significantly improved the access to the main compartment for the driver and passenger. However, this seemingly minor modification to the steering geometry resulted in what many owners felt to be a reduction in the overall handling characteristics. From personal experience, I can attest to the fact that my 1995 extended, turtle topped B 3500 drives more like a sedan than some cars I have owned. It also can be somewhat inconvenient to move about the cabin. But, after 28 years and 224,00 miles, I won't quibble either way with the decisions of the Chrysler engineers.

Now i am back watching your video to learn how to replace the alternator, now my problem is to order one just like it and where to get the ratchet tool to remove those bolts, maybe Auto Zone Has it and i wonder if i have to bring the alternator to Auto Zone to make sure i get the exact replacement? please am i going on the right direction?

    • @CubasAutomotive

      There are 2 bearings in an alternator. 1 just behind the pulley the other in the rear. They BOTH have to be replaced in order to fix the seized condition. To gain access to the rear bearing, the alternator needs to be broken down. In this case the pulley is bolted on and does not have bearings of its own. Changing the pulley would fix nothing.

Ever since then, the belt will not stop squealing. Took it back and they said we can put a new belt on for you. I told them the problem came after you did the alternator/pulley. SIGH. Hey, my Dodge B250 van is leaking coolant and accelerating poorly upon starting with whitish exhaust and excessive fan noise, then normalizing after a minute or 2. Also recently my serpentine belt snapped. However, oil color is fine and no bubbles in radiator at idle. Can anyone make sense of this? haven't gotten any answers from garages. Is it possible coolant is getting into the cylinders, without mixing with oil and the lack of bubbles in the radiator? Thanks!

    • @SouthMainAuto

      IanTx003 Bub If coolant was getting into the cylinders then exhaust gas would be getting into the radiator . If that is the case you can test for that. Check out this ruclips.net/video/U0DdVQoBu4U/видео.html

Yea, I may get one of those to know for sure…was hoping the lack of bubbles in the radiator ruled out head gasket but I didn't rev it / let it warm up due to snapped belt. Just found out my alternator is also seized up…the cause of the snapped belt I'm sure. Weird though cuz the battery is fine.

    Aftermarket reman parts=JUNK
    replaced cv axles on my car and was left with a nasty vibration on acceleration, after some thought I bitched to the supplier and they replaced. (after telling me they never have problems like that) Problem fixed, 6 months later in the middle of winter the boot ripped and the joint was again junk soon after...
    It's getting harder to find any reliable after market companies, some stuff is really good, even had OEM packaging on the odd thing. Then you buy from the same company again and it's JUNK. My favorite part about ur video's is how u don't hesitate to call it like it is, DORMANs JUNK has pee'd me off more then once. "love working on vans, like nobody said ever" lol

    NAPA new alternators are lucky to last 3, maybe 5 years max. At least they are free replacement for life. I guess they figure by the time you buy it the car isn't long for the world anyway.

    Got to love the haters. Everyone on RUclips which has a good channel always has the one thumbs down from a certain Debby Downer. Shallow minded shady tree mechanics I guess. I like the method of removing the debris from the crankshaft pulley. Keep on teaching.

    I never use those cheap Mexican rebuilds! I buy factory part rebuild kits for the starter, alternator and make damn sure the voltage regulator matches the PCM control signal. The PCM expects to see a certain voltage and waveform. If it doesn't. It goes crazy and triggers faults out the wazoo!
    I might add. GM alternator bracket bolts. Go right into the water passage. Seen many a leak from not using sealant on the bolts there.

    • @bobweiss8682
      @bobweiss8682 7 лет назад +4

      That isn't a Slant 6. It's a 3.9L V6, which was only used in trucks and vans. Essentially a Mopar smallblock V8 with 2 cylinders chopped off. www.allpar.com/mopar/39.html
