Possibly one of the best ballads ever sung by a much underrated singer. The time has surely come for a re-evaluation of Kathy as one of this country's best ever singers

This love song sang particularly by Kathy Kirby was very popular in my country, Philippines in the 1960's. Whenever I hear this beautiful song, I always stop what I was doing and just enjoy listening and admiring her beautiful voice and rendition of this song. Thanks God, I found it here today and it will be like reminiscing again my wonderful youthful years.
This was Kathy Kirby's very best performance has things not gone so terribly wrong for her she would have had an amazing career as a concert performer she was up there with the best
Thank you for posting this song and the excellent research notes. Kathy was a brilliant and under-rated singer, one of many in the Sixties that, too often, fell below the radar and we only ever got to hear their one or two biggest songs (as judged by the DJ's, too often!) - at least that's how it seemed to be down here (Australia). A very moving song, with a lot of feeling and depth - and great orchestrals backing it. One listens to a song like this - recorded half-a-century ago and wonder where popular music has gone since then.
".....(as judged by the DJ's, too often!)...." You are overlooking the fact that the record companies themselves were also equally responsible for what was promoted and what wasn't.
I had this on 45 RPM when I was a tween in the Los Angeles suburbs. It got a lot of airplay and I’m surprised to see it did not chart very high. Even at that young age I liked her exceptional voice and the big orchestral backing. Never knew she was so nice to look at! Thanks for posting.
Beautiful - Che's version was a few years later I think. Love the truly epic orchestration. I know each generation thinks their music was the best but comparing this sort of thing with what is around today - Adele for eg - no comparison. When one thinks what a huge star Kathy was its amazing that she been completely forgotten - cept by us.
I always thought this song was older than Cher's version. It had a familiar sound to it like a song from the 60's with somebody like Dusty Springfield singing. Kind of a big production "you don't have to say you love me, I will understand" vibe to it. Not that it sounds like that song, it just sounds like that style from that era.
Cher's version on the Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves album is amazing. Stephanie J. Block's rendition of that version for The Cher Show: A New Musical is incredible too
Kathy's version came out about the same time as Cher's, and in LA, was given about equal playtime on the radio. Both are great but different. Kathy's impression is a bit more earnest, less showy, less of a big Hollywood sort of way...and simpler in the very best way. We had no idea she was British, her interpretation seems very 'American' if that makes any sense at all.
I think DALIDA also excelled in the french version, especially in the second half of the song ruclips.net/video/wxFfyvXyrh0/видео.htmlsi=_fREMyxw3kH6Jwqi
Oddly, in Philly on WIBG's chart it got as high as #13 in September 1965, enough to get it to #91 for the year. Didn't really chart big anywhere else and I don't remember WMCA or WABC in New York ever playing this version.
True. People don't like to give Cher credit for things like that because they like to think everything she did sounded like "Do you believe?". But this song, as well as "Bang Bang", "Train of Thought" and "Gypsies ... " brought out her talent.
I cannot believe this did not chart at all in the U.K. I played it to death when I was just 13 years old in 1965..if only it had charted higher in the USA it could have been a game changer but she had a jealous manager who didn’t want her to be successful there
I think DALIDA also excelled in the french version, especially in the second half of the song ruclips.net/video/wxFfyvXyrh0/видео.htmlsi=_fREMyxw3kH6Jwqi
It just occurred to me..who is the person in this song singing it to? In the middle of the verse it says " But what will YOU do, when HE sets you free, just the way that YOU said goodby to ME".. So who is YOU and who is ME? HE is obviously a man, so YOU and ME could only be females? Is it a song about two lesbians? It would have made more sense if the last line was "just the way that HE said goodby to ME" .. I'm trying to figure out if this song could be sung by a male and still make sense.

@@jmmmnliberal8274 yes, from what I've studied, a French man composed the song, & a male singer released the record in France. The lyrics suggest a man singing to his ex-gf whom he loved, but she jilted him. He warns her that the same could happen to her. Old story. Singles have choices available to them. They reject a sure thing to chase something more exotic & glamorous, then end up rejected themselves. I've been on both ends of that.
@@claudeabraham2347 thank you for that explanation. I was a professional singer for 20 years and I had always wanted to do this song, but wasn't sure about the lyrics. In fact at one point I thought about changing the lyric from boy to someone.. "when you meet someone". I've long since retired from show business, but I would have liked the chance to record that.
Kirby, Carr, Cher, Bassey, all different approaches to this song and all good in their own right. However, in my opinion, Bassey owns this song from the first note to the last.
I had to look it up. I'm copying/pasting what I learned: The Stillman/Dieval tune was originally a British hit for Kathy Kirby, and both Cher and Kirby drove the song right by the censors. The song is either about a woman expressing her love for another woman, or a woman saying au revoir to a gay male she loved-in either case this is not a mother to daughter heart-to-heart: "What will you do/When he sets you free/Just the way that you/Said good-bye to me."

Peter Noone played this on his xm show tonight and I fell in love with it

Cher version was in 1971
@@latinvinyl8414 yeah they said it was released a few years later
This is not the first version tho. young Ronnie James Dio covered this in 1964 with his band The Prophets
Just beautiful... A mother giving advice to her daughter about love..
A rare lesbian song that made the charts in the early sixties
Could be a dumped guy telling the woman as she leaves him, "Careful, if you fall for a man he could leave you too, honey".
We were amazed in the sixties by her..oó

May I please introduce you to Ronnie James Dio?
she had such a beautiful voice...
Big record on WIBG,Philadelphia in the summer of `65.
Kathy Kirby was a big singer like Judy Garland in the US and Edith Piaf in France. She deserves better recognition.

The song was originally sung my a male singer. It makes sense as written. A female singer should have changed the lyrics -
"When you meet girl, ---"

Had to be Phil Spector behind arranging....oó
A matter of taste but Bassey is the winner out of the three.

There are at least four ladies who recorded it, and Johnny Mathis too.
