In 1987, I used to sit in my Fiero at night, away from the roommates, and play that cassette over and over. It was impossible to stop the tape knowing the loop would next start playing “Dance with Somebody,” and on it would go for another 45 minutes. The 70s/80s produced the most fantastic talent imaginable. I’m so glad I lived it. Enjoying the production and writing talent of Q Jones, Babyface, Diane Warren, David Foster, Jam/Lewis, Brown Bannister etc and performed by goddesses like Whitney is my era’s legacy.

Depeche Mode, Soft Cell etc.. and Ballads was not so my taste in this Era, i remember well that i was the "strange" Guy in my little village..at this time i wear long white ruffled shirts, neckties, asymetric cutted long hair with tons of hairspray, wide black trousers from the 50ties/60ties and of course sometimes a Hat like Boy George ;) even eyes and face with make up etc. etc... hahahahahahahahha i remember so well of this song because it was my first big big big lovesickness and have cried a lot with this song.... thank you for reacting to this wonderful song and to bringing back my memories of my youth...it's been a long time, that i have heard this song :)
F-in hilarious!! You once again made me howl even though it was a serious song 🎵! I had no idea Whitney’s Mom sang. Who knew this?? Great touching song. Thanks for the video. I loved it!
Many people knew her mom sang 🙂From Elvis to Chaka Khan (who she sang back up for) She was also part of gospel groups and she won two Grammys for her solo work. She is also Dionne Warwick's Aunt and her cousin is Opera Singer Leontyne Price So singing runs in the family. But I am a HUGE Whitney fan so that is why I knew this LOL
There is another version by Barbra Streisand... also somewhere from the 80.. But I agree with you, this one is excellent. And besides the fact of Whitney's tragic life, this is an B&B song, where most of the times we all can be sure that the song itself is of absolute quality! Take care and entertain us with you nice videos... I really like it!
In 1963 Cissy Houston founded a musical group: Sweet Inspirations, who worked as chorists for Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Dusty Springfield, Van Morrison and Jimi Hendrix.
Whitney is my absolute favorite but I prefer the original recording of this song. This version is great. And I knew this version for 7 years before I heard the original
This is an interpretation of the song, in hindsight very apt as you say. But Benny and Bjorn chose the original singers for a reason, they wanted the song to sound like they had written it. Please listen to the original, you will be shocked at the power from both Elaine Paige and Barbara Dickson. 🌹Much love as always.
Hi GivenToe! Finally we heard you sing! You have a good voice, do not be modest and say that you only sing in the shower 😇 Whitney Houston who sucks from the musical Chess (Written by Björn & Benny from ABBA!) Sings divinely❤️ Sad that it would end so tragically with her and also the daughter 🕯️🙏 They God loves he takes first .... Thank you Given Toe for making your excellent programs‼ ️🌹😇🤩
now Giventoe, we've talked about this before - It's OK to fall into a weeping heap on the floor. Everybody does it. By the way the musical was written by Benny and Bjorn (of ABBA fame).
@@GivenToe I have seen all your reactions to the new ABBA album. You were truly amazing and so touching. Instead when I listened the album for the first time, I cried like a baby.
Ever heard of a little British band called STEPS? Track down their version of this song. It’s emotionally devastating. My favorite version of the song is the original London cast recording from Chess. Stunning. The point where this song sits in the story is painful AF. As for the song re: Whitney Houston, it definitely has that intensity, sure. But it was written quite a few years before her death.
@GivenToe >> it occurs to me that even if you’re a fan of STEPS, you might not have heard their covers of Dancing Queen and Lay All Your Love On Me. Definitely worth a listen. They switch up some of the genders in Lay All Your Love.

I remember 1985 new years eve very well. We were listening to Chess and it annoyed me that the Abba dudes were making songs not for Abba. To put an explanation mark behind it all someone rammed the stick of a new years rocket into the flower soil of a plant outdoors not letting the biggest rocket take off, causing it to explode on the balcony instead of 150m above us. Felt like somebody punched me in the face. A piece of the Rocket (Ye-ah) hit me an inch below an eye. Blood everywhere. Went to the hospital with an ambulance cause none of the grownups were sobor. Got stitched up and went back to the party to listen more to Chess, which I never listened to again after that. This Whitney album dominated charts in 87. Oh, wanna dance with somebody, so amotional and others.
