- The Maid of Llyn y Fan (Morwyn Llyn y Fan) is a one of the traditional Welsh fairy tales. In it we hear how the fey folk (or the tylwyth teg in Wales) are not to me messed with. They are not gauzy winged elfs, but rather creatures to be bargained with, and creatures who hold you to the bargain sworn.

Lovely, my Welsh born friend died 19 months ago, she was born in Bethesda & spoke only Welsh til she went to teacher training college in her teens where she learned to speak English. She married a farmer from Mid Wales & lived here on the farm for the rest of her life with her husband & four children, she became a teacher & then the Head Teacher, in the local school that taught in the Welsh medium but later Welsh/English. She used to tell me the tales of Mabinogion & Taliesin, she’d try me with a smattering of Welsh. She’s very much missed.& this reminded me of her., many thanks 🙏
Where in mid wales was she? I have a hankering to do the Mabinogion in Middle Welsh. Not much of an audience fir that though
@@ClassicGhost We live in a village Foel, still quite a few Welsh speakers in the area & the schools teach in the three mediums, Welsh/ English/ Welsh & English. We’re 18 miles from Welshpool, Barmouth & Machynlleth, we’re not far from Lakes Vyrnwy & Bala, it’s a beautiful place.
Love this story, know it from when I was a child as a slightly different version from German author Helga Gebert (she created a nice rhyme about the bread) and just wrote a new interpretation myself, concerning a special precious healing water loving plant (Eupatorium cannabinum) the 'Wasserfräulein' leaves at the shore for her children after returning to the water. Didn't know the original version had a herbal end too, wunderbar!!

Gripping, enchanting! Marvelous dialect and Welch that positively sings. Heard true Welch many years ago in my grandparents' Wales--Men loading lorries singing in pure harmony. Swallowing tears right now. Remembering.Thank you!

I'm ecstatic!!!!!Welsh folklore is my absolute favorite!!!! I couldn't handle the possibly disturbingly implied sexual subject matter of the Turning of the Screw. It gave me an anxiety attack. This will be much better.
Wales is the only place I've ever been where I couldn't figure out the pronunciation of local place names during the time I was there.
It is actually completely phonetic once you know the system!
Letters are not pronounced as they are in English. For example f is pronounced v and ff is f.

I first came across this old Welsh folktale while watching a fairy documentary. I was particularly interested in this folktale, because it’s one of those old folktales that describes a union between a human and a fairy. There’s another interesting folktale, British I believe. It’s about a midwife and her young maid. The young maid falls in love with a fairy man, and they end up having a baby, and the midwife ends up delivering that baby. I just love these tales. I’m half Russian on my mother’s side, and I was also born and raised in Russia, and Russia also has many old Slavic folktale about an interaction between fairies and humans.

@@ClassicGhost I know that it’s difficult to find authentic sources of information on pre-Christian Slavic tribes, their way of life, mythology, etc… There is some information available, but not as much as I would like.

Delirium inducing music! Oh what pictures come! Like the incantory sound of Welsh, Tony you worked a spell like a great magician. How long did you rehearse that tongue-twister beautiful speech of old- I completely understand why you are 1 individual who intends to preserve the tongue. A good yarn too, not spooky but not meant to be, more aimed at imparting folk wisdom- ? I didn't listen to your talk yet, if I don't, REMIND ME. I have learned SO MUCH, it's a pleasure to have not only a spooky or scary taste of horror or a folk tale AND a short lecture, that's a compliment, Professor- I wanted to be a perennial student- win that lottery, travel EVERYWHERE, write and photograph the world and spend much time studying all I couldn't as an undergrad- there was a course I could never schedule at my university, Religion, Witchcraft, something, Man, Myth, Magic- that defunct magazine was similar in content. Really fascinated by your knowledge of Jung and certain aspects of Freud. The latter applies to Fritz Leiber's or Lang? story too. The femme Fatale reminded me of Edvard Munch's vampiric women- he had issues around his sexuality I think. As a feminist I haven't much use for much of Freud but his writings you source are in my "if I only had some money " wish list. Along with James Merrill, Mark Fisher ( I have his essays on capitalism) and one of your books, Georgina ? and Neil Gaiman. That is the SERIOUS READING. Not the relaxing mysteries and music, always music....Namaste. ( glad you have an attic room of your own! All creative people should) Z.

@@ClassicGhost Typical mix up on my part! I tried in vain to put into a succint few sentences all The Girl with the Hungry Eyes roused in me and couldn't. I have VERY strong opinions about the modeling and advertising industries, I have studied advertising ( curriculum req, LOATHED IT, gave up on Mad Men, too sextet, grrrr, very well written, acted...Been date raped 3x, you DID mention male abusive of women in your fantastically interesting talk after The Girl With The Hungry Eyes. I really did imagine her as Munch did at times but then I saw the vixen "morph" too. The author delves too deep for the average model- I mean as a woman obsessed and eroded by this profession I know alot about its functioning that weren't what Lieber? sorry, you know I am not operating well these last few months- it's full of Cocaine, rape and anorexia for starters and IT FEEDS, IT FEEDS. There is far too much in the story for addled Z. here to go into. I listened to 2 more of his unusual stories on another channel, one about a funny cat and hmm, I was enjoying something in the future but feel asleep. A very, very clever writer with something ORIGINAL TO SAY. Thank you. A nice change from second rate ghost stories set in blizzards- I love the howling winds- I come from the Prairies and also lived in Montreal when it got REALLY cold, I am considered a Canadian traitor! France is the warmest place I could live and NOT in the very south, too hot! Sorry if I offended you. Namaste.

Well. I guess things happen in threes. But the fairy folk were being very much letter of the law here and quite unfair to poor old Gwyn. Gwyn ap Nudd is said to be king of the fairies but that’s probably a coincidence here
