I like my R40. Bought it for it's throwing ability and long runtimes. I rotate two batteries between a D4 charger and the supplied base.

I asked nitecore about leaving the R40 on the charger. And well here is there reply.
    Dear Jaydies,
Thanks for the inquiry. It shouldn't be an issue leaving the light on the charger for extended periods of time. The charging cradles are actually designed for that purpose so that the light will be charged and ready to go whenever you need it.

When I asked them they said no.
I think it is fine if you leave it on the cradle, but only if the cradle is unplugged, otherwise it does not shut off and all the power is dissipated as heat.

correct me, if I'm wrong but as far as I remember from my education (it's been a while), there is a reason why it shouldn't be kept on the base (and also why there might be no external power button): Inductive charging goes both ways so to speak. So you will leak charge when you leave it on the inductive charger, even if you cut the power. That's the nature of the inductive circuitry. Hence the instructions from the manufacturer to remove it from the base after charging.

Yup, the base doesn't know when the flashlight is done charging, so it just keeps pumping power even if the flashlight has cut off the battery because it is full. All that energy gets dissipated as heat instead, so basically wasting power and heating up the flashlight which isn't too good for long periods of time.

Yes, but that wasn't my point. My point is, that even IF the power is disconnected from the charging station, the charging circuit is (most likely) designed in a way, that charge will be leaked from the flashlight to the charger. So keeping it on the charger will discharge the flashlight slowly. Preventing that is not only not an easy task but also more expensive cost and room wise.

If the charging station is disconnected, then the coil in it is not a complete circuit and it's as if it doesn't exist, so the coil in the flashlight cannot transfer any energy to it.

What happens if we use a simple 26650 battery?

Another gimmick... same as all base chargers like Olight, etc.

What do you prefer? USB cable charging that you just plug in? Or charging batteries with an external charger?

Both have their advantages, to be honest I'm selling my base charging lights because I found that I preferred to to externally charge my batteries... batteries will last longer and are charged faster on an external charger in general, but base chargers are convenient though.

Yup, I can understand that, flashlight enthusiasts with many flashlights and batteries prefer to charge them all on a dedicated external charger :) Quickly swapping batteries is great too.
