  • The Backun Educator Series presents Michelle Anderson, founder of Clarinet Mentors (www.clarinetmentors.com), in a series of videos designed specifically to help school band teachers to teach clarinet more easily and effectively. Why should your clarinet students swab and clean out their clarinets? Aside from removing their personal inner-clarinet mould garden, swabbing enhances the life of the instrument and prevents some mechanical problems that could make it more difficult for students to play. This video demonstrates how to clean out the clarinet properly after a music class or practice session.

In a public middle school, there’s not a ton of care talked about and you practically have to learn the instrument your self. I was never told not to run the swab through the mouth piece. And was never told I could wash my mouth piece. Thanks so much!

Finally! This video is truly showing the proper way to clean / swab a clarinet. My only wish is that this was a video directed toward students rather than the teacher.

I got a Leblanc Normandy clarinet through a school band program in 1957. It came with a swab that resembled a bottle brush. It got lost over the years, and I have tried to replace it, but no one has anything like it--they even tell me that I'm mistaken, that no manufacturer ever provided such a swab. I really hate the wet hankies and would love to find a replacement for my bottle brush swab.

i think i know what you're trying to describe, but the most similar cleaner i can think of is a pad saver

@@alyssakost2967 I finally found the item I was talking about--it's called (oddly enough) a "clarinet cleaning brush"). It does resemble a bottle brush, or a pad saver with a long handle. It can easily be ordered online once you figure out what to ask for. It seems surprising that so few people know what it is called, or that it even exists.

@@marktracy586 What they're saying is that Melabyshua was running their swab through their mouthpiece when she said in the video not to. It's a joke that they swabbed their mouthpiece, not a contradiction.

As a Saxophone player learning clarinet it was weird to not swab the mouth piece. On sax there is mouthpiece swabs you can buy that are very small. That you normally use after a practice session but since the clarinet mouthpiece is much smaller I can see why you don't swab it.

Try to pull it out the opposite way! If it's very stuck, you may have to take the instrument in to a repair technician. Good luck!

It's okay to swab your mouthpiece AS LONG AS it has cloth or fabric over the weight.
