As a mother of a murdered daughter, I find it selfishly thoughtless and no regard for Sherry's life and loved ones from his mother and wife pleading for his life, stating Sherry was already dead and no point killing him too. This monster thought nothing of raping, choking, and stabbing her and then begged to let himself live. How ironic, he had no mercy for her pleas but begged for mercy for himself.

@Dogmom…these killers are at heart, inherently cowards. They’ve got the cojones to murder their victims but will be the first one pissing their pants when they hear that they’ve been sentenced to death. They deserve the same mercy as they showed the person they murdered…NONE!!

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Dogmom, I can't even imagine what it's like to lose a child in such a way.
When the mother and father of the killer minimised Sherry's heinous murder in their closing pleas for clemency, I thought to myself it's no wonder he had grown into the narcissist he clearly was. Psychopaths can be made through abuse and neglect, combined with genetic predisposition, but there's evidence that families who idolise one child to the point where he believes the world revolves around him (the golden child), you can get a similar narcissistic personality disorder/sociopathy. It seems they held him in very high regard, so much so that his killing of an innocent woman was brushed a side as a simple mistake that anyone could have made if they were having a bad day. Despicable.

I was shot 16 years ago by an ex-boyfriend. It was a hostage standoff situation. He committed suicide in front of me, the bullet went through him and it went through me. Sherry did so well getting the 'Help Me' sign written in lipstick, and visible, out of the trunk of the moving vehicle. Bless her courageous heart, if only it had worked. She was in the dark, tied up and must have been scared out of her wits. If one of the witnesses had the presence of mind to follow the car and stay with it, she might just have been saved. No cell phones then to call police, but another man could have been a hero, intervened and rescued Sherry.
It is staggering that initially, police just blindly accepted Brewer's story about that being a prank, at face value! Who plays a dumb prank like that? He was not a teenager!
Poor Sherry walked into a sex predator's trap. Brewer clearly spent a long time plotting it and setting it up, to rape and murder her. He knew she trusted him as a' family friend', and used the story of him and his wife wanting to meet her to celebrate their (fictitious) pregnancy, to make it sound innocent. Such an evil betrayal, and from what we heard about him I think her widower was right - raping Sherry was all about Brewer's ego. He couldn't stand the fact she wasn't interested in him sexually, but adored her husband. Brewer is a classic narcissist, and though I don't support the death penalty I was glad to hear he got it - and after all those agonising years fighting to live, with the Sword of Damocles hanging over him!
Hopefully his death also brought closure to his wife. It's astonishing she stood by him after such an horrific crime. That too indicates he's a narcissistic abuser, so controlling he was still able to dominate his wife from behind bars, after he'd raped and murdered another woman!
You can absolutely see what kind of arrogant creep Brewer was ALL his life. I wonder if his adoring parents ever looked in the mirror and regretted molly coddling him?

So the police initially believed that a hitchhiking woman happily got into the trunk of a car of a stranger to prank motorists? Yeah, if I got into a strange man's car and he suggested I get in the trunk I'd be leaping out of a moving vehicle to escape, not happily playing along. No sane woman (or man) would get into the trunk of a car in that scenario. AND they knew a woman was missing but didn't manage to put two and two together? These stories highlight the inadequacy of some police units, don't they? They often seem sloppy at best, completely clueless at worst (having said that, sometimes they are complicit in criminal activity, so that is probably rock bottom policing). Such a sad case. I expect Sherry had some hope when she managed to scrawl the note in lipstick, sadly help never came for her.

This was a horrific case and not one I will forget the details to ; it is bad enough when someone has so much promise for a bright future and they do not live to see the fruition of it.... but to have it all stolen in a fit of anger at anyone's hands is truly depraved . My prayers go out to Sherry's widowed husband and her understandably broken family .
In Sherry's case I do believe that justice was served but in all.... the widower of Sherry and her family are correct.... the death of anyone even responsible for murder will not bring back the loved one of another . I agree with the father of the victim in that it seems better to just argue for a "whole life sentence" with no possibility of parole rather than death since the latter involves so many appeals and publicity and pain. To me, being trapped in a concrete box for decades is not a pleasant fate - and my religious beliefs favor that an offender be given as much time as possible to repent and possibly seek redemption as long as they are locked away so they can't hurt anyone else.
The murderer's family makes me sick. Given his background and what the victim's father said about his "exploits" in college, I'll bet everyone around him encouraged his entitled behavior and let him get away with all sorts of mischief leading up to this dark act. Then they all continued to insist he was such a "good boy" and that he shouldn't be punished for one "mistake." Disgusting.

I definitely think he got what he deserved and should have just been grateful to escape the chair. Sherry sounds like an amazing person, and even though she wasn't able to escape she was able to send the police to the right person. Who knows, he may have gotten away with it if Sherry hadn't had the tenacity to get her note out of the trunk. Having lost my brother in 2006 I agree - time doesn't heal wounds; it just scars them over enough for you to get by. You learn how to live your new normal and that's about it.

Why in the world would the police officer not open the trunk immediately, and threaten the husband of the missing woman with arrest, if he opened his the trunk of his wife's (and also probably his) car? I don't get that at all. What if she was still alive in there but was injured and dying? How is not opening the trunk at that point helping the situation in any way. If anything it would just possibly make it worse.

One of the reasons I'm in favor
of the death penalty is that there is no greater psychological torture than knowing you ARE going to die.
    It's even better knowing WHEN
you are going to die. Let the murderers experience the same thing they put their victims through. Also, I'd rather the murderers die than live on to

Then I have to scramble. But I've been disabled for years now and strangely for more than 30 years the schedules are what kept me alive and on point. Able to be a single parent and even have a team leader position in a tough factory on the floor. I was literally a bear for detail and on time delivery and always being at work. The minute I knew I could not go back that was it. The bottom fell out. I took after my dear late Father all those years and now I feel like a failure. Scary too. Very unlikely that the police would have been able to save Sherry Byrne.
Even with reports coming in there was next to nothing in video surveillance or CCTV and no mobile/cell phones.
I've no idea how many reports came in, or how much time passed between the sightings and the reports being passed along, but the police would have always been one, two or three steps behind Brewer.
It would have come down to luck for the police to actually spot the car while Sherry was still alive.
Regarding the "prank" story Brewer concocted...yes, that's awful police work, but sadly Sherry was already dead by that point.
I'm not one for defending the police, but there was very little they could have done to save Sherry.

@@theshamanarchist5441 Yes, an awful story...in every regard.
Like you I was wondering why no-one tried stopping the vehicle, (assuming that no-one did make an attempt) but it'd be a hell of a predicament to be in - frightening for sure and certainly not something that any of us could imagine happening.
There would be a lot of things to consider - the likelihood of it being a prank...or not - what kind of person are you going to be dealing with...are they armed?
      Are they deranged?
Lots of people don't want to get involved, (though I understand that the 'bystander effect' has been largely debunked) as they assume others will act.
Some people are just naturally fearful or cautious.
Some of the witnesses might have felt that they couldn't deliberately ram another vehicle - some might have be driving a compact car, thinking that it might not be enough....who knows?
Some might think that they wouldn't even know how to ram another vehicle, without causing injury to the person in the trunk.
I suppose we've got to think, "realistically, could I do it? Would I do it?"
A very difficult decision for sure - I'd like to think that I would act, but I couldn't say with any degree of certainty
      (A) Ram another car off the road and then find out it's a prank - who's at fault?
How do the police deal with it?
How do your insurers deal with it?
How does your husband/wife feel about you smashing up the car?
      OR
      (B) You don't act, beyond calling the police, and later find out that it was genuine.
I am actually quite impulsive, and it's unlikely that I'd be driving a car that I'm precious about, so maybe I would...I think.
