I feel like Lady Danbury in this scene was amazing as well. The look she gave George when she realized how he cared for Charlotte broke my heart. Also Brimsley piping up about the blood loss to the king took courage and showed his love for his lady. :)
Yes. Lady speaking up was amazing, but Brimsley speaking up could have had big repercussions. I think both the King and Queen could tell these two people cared deeply for their Queen.
Yes and Brimsley usually doesn't talk much. So for him to pipe up meant he was very alarmed at the kind of care Charlotte was receiving from the doctor.
Because only a woman could relate to another woman's experience Having a medical degree doesn't mean you really understand the physical and emotional toll it takes to give life.
Most of the doctors also didn't have much experience with childbirth. There's actually a theory that childbirth for royal women was more dangerous because they were almost exclusively treated by high-status male doctors without much experience in delivering babies and not seasoned midwifes. It was not "socially acceptable" for a royal princess or queen to be treated by a lowly midwife.
You can tell that Brimsley has a strong relationship with Queen Charlotte at this point because he can't even stand to see or hear her in pain but refuses to leave her side all the same even though no man is supposed to be present unless they are a appointed physician. I love this relationship.
The scene where Charlotte is walking down a corridor, and she is trying so hard not to cry, not fall apart in all her loneliness. He is 5 steps behind her. He pauses, watches, and extends his hand out to hold her without touching her...touching just the air between them. That scene alone is beautiful. Fifteen times...she went through this type of pain FIFTEEN times. I couldnt imagine even going through it once! All the same, watching George support her through labor is amazing.
And without any pain meds I'm sure... Or if there were any, probably not as effective as an epidural. I recently just gave birth and when i saw this scene I totally felt those labor pains again that she was going through! And my nurse was telling me that back then, women would die during the labor and delivery process alone because of the amount of pain they were in. So God bless Charlotte for doing this 15x!!! 😮
Or not. Some women have pleasurable births, some don't really feel more than the uncomfort of being pregnant, and some are in such excruciating pain they don't know what to do. There was a video of a woman that gave birth to her fourth child technically at the hospital, but by herself really, without meds. It was very quick too, and it didn't seem to hurt at all.
