    Many farmers, including my grandfather, who were actively using their WD for field work back in their day put the WD45 engine kit in them.
    4 inch stroke = stock WD engine, 4.5 inch stroke = WD45 engine kit installed. You can measure the piston stroke with a piece of wire inserted through a spark plug hole while turning the engine by hand.
    My Dad said the WD45 engine kit made a big difference in usable power for field work, especially on hills.
    I still own and use this same tractor. It is now retired from field work, but still useful as a utility tractor with a front-end loader and rear blade. It has plenty of power for its size.

      AC bought Buda engine company in 1953 . The WD 45 diesel had a 6 cylinder Buda Engine. When I was in high school I spent many hours on a WD 45 Diesel plowing. We pulled a mounted 3 bottom plow but in certain soils the WD 45 could pull 4 bottoms.

    I have (I think) a WD. but it has the Power Crater motor. So I kinda wonder if it might not be a WD45. It's not currently on my property or I'd go out and check the plate or lack there of.

    • @bluegrallis
      @bluegrallis 8 лет назад

      How do you KNOW it has a "Power Crater" engine? Anybody can put a sticker on the block. The power crater name came from the shape of the top of the piston. If you put those pistons in a WD engine with a 4 inch stroke, you would have less power than with standard flat top pistons.
      It could also have a 4.5 inch stroke crank from a 45 and use the power crater pistons making it very close in power to a "real" 45

  • @bluegrallis
    @bluegrallis 8 лет назад +1

    brokenwrench1 The late WD did NOT use the WD45 block. They did put the constant mesh transmission in the WD, with a curved shifter in 1952. WD's started with the 'so called' 45 transmission ( with curved shifter ) in 1952 at serial WD127007. The 45 with the 226 cu in engine (4.5 inch stroke) started at WD146607.

      i lived a couple miles from my AC dealer that had a AC tractor collection . i worked for the dealership as a mechanic. the owner showed me the last WD the dealership got in and the owner showed me that it was a rare WD that had the WD45 block in it he also had a rare wd45 that came out with a 6cyl gas engine used in the A gleaner combines . in my area there were 6 or seven of these in the county and they were experimental models and would handle a 4-14 plow. they were never put into production as the d17 came out the next year. AC put a few test tractors in my area because of the sticky river bottom gumbo soil took more HP to pull the same plow.

    • @bluegrallis
      @bluegrallis 8 лет назад

      There is nothing RARE about a WD with a 45 block in it. Hundreds of them have had the original engine replaced with a 45. The ONLY 6 cylinder Allis put in a WD45 was a diesel and many of them have been changed to a 6 cylinder gas. Nothing rare there either, just NOT factory.
      As for you comment about the transmissions, No W series tractors had synchronized gears. The WD till late 1952 had a straight cut spur gear tranny that actually moved the gears to shift and the late 52 WD had helical cut gears with a curved shifter tranny . Collars slid to "shift" gears and the gear itself stayed engaged at all times, hence the constant mesh name. Neither transmission was synchronized.
      There are REAL knowledgeable people at allischalmers.com that you could learn from if you were so inclined. There are also a few that "heard" from so and so that their WD came from the factory with a Snap Couple hitch. That never happened either. Many were converted at the dealerships though before being sold "new".
      Repeating misinformation does not make it fact

    Easiest way to identify styled w series tractors is the shifter stick. Wc is a long shifter WD it's straight and the 45 is curved.

  • @brokenwrench1
    @brokenwrench1 11 лет назад +1

    this is not true about the last year production wd in 52 or 53 the wd used the same block and transmission. you could take a wc or a wd and put the wd45 crankshaft in it with the piston set then change the intake and carb and you would have a wd45 in a wd block
    the wd had a non syncronized gear set in the trans with a straight gear shift until 53 the wd and wd45 had a curved gear shift with the heavier gears the wd was 36 hp the wd45 was 45-47 hp with standard pistons

    What's the difference between a WD and WC?

    • @deanmeyer1815
      @deanmeyer1815 Год назад +1

      We had hand brakes and long,thin shifter that came out of the transmission right behind the bell housing and had no factory hydraulics. Also, the throttle was horizontal and the lever engaged notches.
      WDs had straight shifters that came up near the steering wheel support, had vertical quadrants behind the steering wheel for throttle on right and hydraulic lever on left. Most WDs were sliding gear transmissions, while late WDs and 45s were constant mesh transmissions with curved shifter in the same location.
      They also had traction booster,but 45s had snap coupler factory installed.
