7:53 "If you're not going to use [_______] to create our contrast, ...then how are you?"
7:20 "You get to choose what type of contrast you wanna use in your artwork."
8:33 This is a great list of options to create Emphasis!
9:06 "Contrast is any & all of these things, and you get to pick & choose which ones you want to use." Pointing out the void of empty / uninteresting / opposite contrast type of space around the subject is very helpful!
11:41 This is a great lesson on Hierarchy! (Start with the subject, then ignore that & move to the next most important, and so on - using the same Design Principles to create Emphasis going down in order of greatest importance to least important.)
The SVS guys (Will Terry, Jake Parker, & Lee White) describe this as: 1st read, 2nd read, & 3rd read (What catches your eye first?)
14:06 "Everything on this painting is supporting that focus.”
14:21 “Each time you step down from one target to the next, you’re just lowering the amount of contrast [to lessen the Emphasis].”
15:01 “Even within this shape [of the subject] …there is sort of a gradient of contrast that goes all the way down.” “There are areas that are high contrast and areas that are lower contrast."

Just wanted to thank you. I really like your definition of contrast. I've read/watched a decent amount of color theory/composition, and it hasn't clicked like this before. How you analyze examples- cutting out the images, showing how the theory works, so good. If you have time, I look forward to more. Either way- this has been a huge help.

I've been debating continuing it since, from an analytics standpoint, these are some of my worst performing videos I've done. This series seems to perfectly encapsulate my problems with this platform.
It's not enough to just be educational. I have a hard time balancing the educational info with trying to make a video that hits all the metrics that make a "successful" video in the eyes of RUclips.
It's frustrating for me because my videos make little in ad revenue in any case. This video has...as of now...has made roughly $2-3. Episode 1... Less than $20 in two months. A few folks will click the links in the description and that keeps this channel limping along, but that's why my videos are so spread out. I can't keep hemorrhaging time into them when I'm trying to make a living doing it.
BUT I said all that to say that comments like this are the only thing keeping it going right now. I should probably do a update outside of an episode on this, but I'm probably going to wait until the 3rd episode is out, then I'll see where everything stands.

@@colorwithkurt Understandable of course. I know it must take a lot of energy just to figure out the wording for each video. Makes me happy to hear that the comments help. I said it previously but it's been a while since I've learned something that changed how I approach artwork. I've been doing master studies/general life drawings and kind of feeling like info has been bouncing off me. The idea of contrast (looking for where there is a lot vs a little, making charts for what I'm looking at), feels like I have a direction again. More importantly I'm looking at artwork/world differently, which is exciting.
ps. in ep1, the weaponizing storytelling section- so good. And I found this channel through: "Why can color be so hard? A color theory tutorial on color constancy" hearing how you approach each panel- very useful. Lastly thanks for taking the time to reply :).

Hi! Again a fantastic video that clarifies a lot. Though I have a little question. I am a gamedev trying to get into art to create my own stuff. The thing is, I watch your vids and understand everything but I hit a wall when trying to apply it. Do you know if there are any exercises to learn how to do basic coloring to at least "start"?
I don't know about any exercises actually... This does need a remedy! :)

LMFAO! I am color blind. I literally couldn't see the difference in color. You pointed out the green in the trees then the brown...lol I saw a white background and greenish silhouettes. I am screwed.
It's intentionally hard to see there. But I've taught colorblind students that have done great work. Focus on values and the differences you CAN see. That's what makes art art. Contrast. That's a good place to start.
@@colorwithkurt Been in special effects for 20 years...creature design. I basically put paint kits together with colors that work for particular critters. Alot like those Limited palettes you Talk about. So I just need to use the same method here. Great info. Thanks.
