Thanks so much for watching! I haven't stopped thinking about Better Call Saul since I finished watching it-so, of course, I had to compare it to my other favourite prequel!
Besides maybe The Godfather Part II, I'm not sure it gets much better than these. But prove me wrong-what are your favourite prequels?

There's also a special edition Banshee created by West Coast Customs for Rockstar back when GTA V was released that very briefly appears in the beginning of the season five episode Bagman. And then, of course, there's the fact that Steven Ogg (Trevor in GTA V) appears in both seasons one and five, so there are actually a few more connections between BCS and Rockstar's games. What I love about the two cliff scenes in RDR 1 and 2 is how people can interpret them in so many ways.
You could see it as Dutch saying the same dialogue in both scenes because this is his last wirds that he’s rehearsed for years. Informing his performative and two-faced nature. In this interpretation, Dutch is never genuine with anyone, even his gang members, because he’s trying to feed his own ego and pride. He wants to die a ‘hero’s death’ and just says what he thinks is the best words for that moment, not because he’s genuinely introspective.
You could also see it in the way that you interpretted in the video. He’s calling back to that moment because he’s up against a wall and is maybe regretting the decisions that led to Arthur’s death, the gangs disollution, and the carnage that followed afterwards.
I interpret it as an eternal truth that Dutch learned long before either of the games. Dutch probably had ambitions when he was younger (possibly when he first met Hosea) of being a Robin Hood type hero, stealin from the rich and giving to the poor. But because of him facing failure time and time again with his gang, the constant losses of friends along the way, and the further entrapment that he feels within America with its bureacracy and greed and grip on his personhood; he has become nihilistic. I see the story of RDR2 of his final descent into total detachment from the cause he claims to fight for and his regard for the people around him. By the end of RDR2 he doesnt actually believe that he can rally the gang together in one final job to escape America, he just wants to cause noise. He just wants to rage against the society that made him a monster. Nothing else matters.
He might tell himself that he’s doing justifiable things but he’s just lying to himself. And I think his character is the epitomy of “if you can lie to yourself, you can lie to anyone.”
The thing I love is that any interpretation is valid because he’s such a complicated and well-written character and I love how you explore that in this video.
Your work is just top notch man. You make me filled with passion for story telling and art in every video. Cant wait to see more and hope youre doin well. 👊🏻

      Well said.
My thoughts on it was always that he had said it many a time when his back was against the wall but always half-assing it. Maybe he read it in an Evelyn Miller book.
But I think when he says it to John at the end he really comes to understand it. He knows it REALLY is the end now and these words finally make sense to him.
This is just based on delivery and an incredible performance, and of course is just my interpretation

    • @JohnnyFilmsy-Boi
      @JohnnyFilmsy-Boi 2 года назад +11

@@ChardeeMacDennis96 That makes sense, I like that interpretation. I think Dutch repeating the same line almost word for word in RDR1 speaks to his insincerity. He knows he's speaking his last words to a man he raised who clearly saw as his father, and all he cares to do is make some big speech reliving a time he felt smart. Nothing personal about the life he's lived, no reflecting on what he did to John, it's all about power and ego for him.

On a character to character level, there is so much to consider for the subtly but masterfully implied character development for those lucky characters who get to appear in both games. I am always amazed to consider the following, that only Jack Marston and Edgar Ross appear in all 4 points of time: 1899, 1907, 1911, and 1914, that, together, interstingly, goes from a Frontier Western (Red Dead II) into a Spaghetti Western (Red Dead I,) bizarrely out of order.
If you listen to Reverend Swanson's opening monologue in the cabin in chapter 1, where he reads Ezekiel, and interpret Reverend Swanson as our ears into Rockstar's intentions, it becomes easy to understand the verse as Rockstar's explanation as to why the timelines are as they are. Feel free to look up that camp dialogue, the cabin in Colter is so rich with it but most players miss it just hustling the missions.

Beautiful video essay man. You nailed it. Now I’m jonesing to go replay red dead 1& especially 2. I rewatched BCS & BB twice this year so I’ll let that feeling simmer for a bit. We’re lucky to have experienced both of these works of art as it was released. With all the shit hurdled at us in modern times, we at the very least have art like this to make it all worthwhile.

Red dead 2 is by far my favourite game of all time, I’ve played it at least 10 times now, and every time at the end of Arthur’s part, I always get emotional, the performance and sensational and the downfall of the gang is such a heartthrob to experience, especially given what happened in the first game. I honestly doubt there will ever be another game that comes close to it for me.

You should seriously play the first one then. It's a little hard to get into at first, since the second one is superior graphically and mechanics wise. But playing it for the story is more than worth it. John is a straight badass in the first one, way more so than in 2. I wish R* would smarten up and remake it, so people would be more inclined to play it.

John the SOB gets tricked by Pinkerton's to go arrest or kill all his previous gang members in exchange for his wife and his son. Like a little dumb hoe he does that, and then the Pinkerton obviously murder the shit out of him.

I still can't believe that John when out to hunt down the Mexican guy from his previous gang, the same guy who in rdr2 went out in the snowstorm to find his injured ass and bring him back to his hoe wife. John is the worst.

Honestly to my friends it is not a secret that Better Call Saul is my favourite show and that Breaking Bad is all the way up there aswell.
When it comes to games I think that it is also well known that Red Dead Redemption 2 is my favourite game; with BCS and RDR2 this video perfectly explains my vision and passion for these kinds stories.

The parallels between these two works have been in my mind for quite some time. And I agree that in their own right they are as close to perfect as they can get. What bums me out is the disconnection that I feel between the original and the prequel in both cases, although I have to say that in the case of BB and BCS they were able to resolve it intelligently through narrative devices such as ellipsis, despite some retcons being damn near unfixable. In the case of RDR1 and RDR2, however, the more I think of them as independent works instead of a continuous narrative, the better. It's not just that John doesn't mention Arthur 12 years later, it's that the whole premise of the first game, John ditching the gang after they left him for dead, it's not fleshed out as carefully as Jimmy's Transition into Saul. I think that RDR2 should have put more of a spotlight in John's disillussion with the gang, while also taking its time to make Arthur find it in him to forgive his friend. That hat transfer at the end would have been so much more powerful if John had been able to say sorry for leaving. Also, Javier in RDR2 is way too likeable (I can't hate on anyone who gets me to love "Cielito Lindo" more than I do), even in the end when he turns, but refuses to point his gun at Arthur and John; he is certainly not the trash human being that John finds in Mexico all those years later. Anyway, in comparison to everything they do right, these are just nit picks, and they don't hinder my enjoyment of these two beautifully crafted universes.
