haha yes Ponya is actually a red panda and she is contextualized as a tourist in the game (presumably from China). Tanuki would be an interesting thing to be added to the game👀
As a sumo fan, 2 little notes: 1. Only the highest ranked Gyoji is allowed to have a dagger. 2. The 6 wrestlers vs 1 is most likely a reference to a the show fight mostly done by yokozuna, where they face muliple wrestlers at once. or The training, where the winner will choose his next opponent, so all other wrestlers will storm the ring to get picked next.
Fun fact, Tanuki are actually canines and one of the few members of the canid family that can climb trees (the other notable member capable of this is the Gray Fox, which is native to North America)
Technically, Tanuki are Canids, not Canines (Canine is reserved specifically for the wolf/dog/coyote/jackal Canis clan in taxonomy). Foxes are also Canids, as are Maned Wolves, Gray Foxes, Bat-Eared Foxes (these latter two are not considered "True" Foxes as their genes are too distant from all other fox species). The Tanuki and Gray Fox are considered basal species of the Canid family (meaning that they are more similar to the shared ancestor of these species than to their modern more specialized and developed cousins).
@@GreyWolfLeaderTW true, but I have seen quite a few cases where the two terms are used interchangeably, usually with dogs and wolves, but I have also seen it used with other member of the canid family in a few places, so the confusion is understandable, the Tanuki is technically classified as a Dog
@@dracone4370 Very true. Much like how Spider-man is a spider like MAN, Racoondogs are a type of dog, not a racoon. In fact, belive it or not, there actually a type of fox No really, they belong to Tribe Vulpini, and along with Bat eared foxes are just one step removed from the genes Vulpes (aka true foxes, aka what everyone thinks of when they say Fox). And there's a good few creatures called foxes that are less related to Vulpes vulpes (Red fox) then the Tanuki, so its no flook. That does give an extra accidental element to the rivalry between Kitsune and Tanuki, dont you think
8:07 - I think I recall there being some Shamusho as well in the Scarlet & Violet's Teal Mask DLC. Specifically the counter location you go to in order to participate in the Ogre Ousting mini-game. Fun detail to see in another game that's HEAVY on the Japanese Cultural inspirations/references
8:37 Well, it looks similar to a boss in one of the Yokai Watch games, (Who I learned was named Wobblewok) and the wiki said, that he could be based off the gourd that Sun Wukong seals two demons in and the Dragon Ball Scene that was inspired by the one in Journey to the West. So, maybe the same inspiration is used here.
I had to work hard to not mention the JttW and DB events every time I see something upgrade or use their gourd in the new Wukong game. (Or other stuff I know- mostly from stuff inspired by JttW or random wiki pages about it I've read as a result of those references)
Fun fact: The colored tassels on the tsuriyane represents the four cardinals directions in Eastern Philosophy (Red = South, White = West, Black = North, Azure = East); with green being a typical stand-in for "azure" which is generally means blue, green, and anything in between.
I'm here for the Heian Period references. I actually remember translating a story and making a video about Abe no Seimei kidnapping another onmyoji's shikigami to teach him a lesson for trying to pull a fast one on Seimei. No mention of paper. Though there's a whole section of stories related to ghosts and demons later in the collection I'm working on and maybe we'll see more about onmyoji and paper there.
Beetle sumo was also believed to be an inspiration for Pokémon battles as well. Not sure if that is the case...but it would make sense as the collecting aspect of Pokémon was believed to be based on the popular hobby of bug collecting in Japan. Heck...there are actually vending machines that dispense bugs for that hobby! (Stay away, Andrew Zimmern...those are definitely NOT snack machines!)
It's a well-known fact for the Pokémon historians. The guy behind the franchise, Satoshi Tajiri, was an avid bug collector. _Jidōhanbaiki_ (vending machines) in Japan are well known for dispensing things that aren't normally dispensed in the west.
I have a new appreciation for Polteageist. That's just a G-max version! That dummy in the sword shop looks like Koro Sense from Assassination Classroom. 😁
i think i saw the onion head reference from Howl's Moving Castle (that prince that was turned into the scarecrow, i forget what veggie his head was) in the blacksmith part, i enjoy these videos :)
Seeing this upload brought me no end of joy. ESPECIALLY since I've recently gotten into sumo and it's been an absolute blast to watch. So, along with getting back into Bo, I'm going to be appreciating things more now. HAKKEYOI!
I have a video idea: How ninja is Conan Edogawa from the long-running Manga and Anime Case Closed / Detective Conan? He kind of fits the description. Gathering information (both when solving crimes and when chasing the main villains), secrecy, deception, spy-gadgets/ninja-tools, wearing the colour blue... The Manga turns 30 this year, so...
I got this game a short time ago and I am loving it so far. I probably wouldn't have heard of it if it weren't for you so thank you! I need to see more Ghibli shows. It has been a while since I have seen one. Because of that my first thought when seeing the shikigami was the anime "The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World" where his magic uses those paper dolls and he uses them to summon ayakashi he had defeated and sealed. It's not a bad show. I mostly like the fact that they tried something different from the mountain of isekais that seem to do pretty much the same thing every time.
Ah, I hadn't expected a second part so soon! I suggested to take some more time so more people could play and/or beat the game for themselves first! Heh, I guess I'm the only patient commenter though :P
If you get the chance, I’d love to see a video about Bakeru. There are probably a lot of angles to take with that one, like Japan’s fairy tale canon or examining the festival aesthetic of the villains.
I thought the smiling practice dummies might be a reference to assassination classroom and Koro sensei. The color and big smile was what gave me that vibe
I''ve been slowly getting more obsessed with Shisa references. Probably started around when I learned about King Caesar's (Godzilla) connection to them. (Not sure if you've ever covered Kaiju.)
Love the video, GG! Can’t wait to see more if you’re up for it! :) I don’t know if you have heard of this but have you seen the film Inu-Oh? I can’t help but draw some similarities with Dororo

I immensely enjoyed the game. I would have never heard about it if it wasn't for your first video. It was really fun! In terms of gameplay, I'd say it's more Ori and the Blind Forest with Hollow Knight mixed in. Regardless, it's definitely worth the low price it's at!

I've currently only got two things left to do in this game (that i know of). The fragile egg gauntlet and the final boss battle. I think i got close on my first attempt, but i have no way of really knowing how many phases he actually has. As for the egg... im not good enough at the platforming to go that distance without getting hit.

Ok, yes, Ponya could VERY MUCH be a red panda. I just saw the name and went, "OMGTANUKIREFERENCE!!!'
Reminded me of Mei Ling of Turning Red!
It's also a gibli reference of the studio gibli film by the name pom poko
If Naruto is named after water, why dose he used wind chakra?

Really happy to see a part 2 to this 😊
The swordsmith named kogi which i assume is short for kogitsunemaru the sword forged by sanjo munechikawith aid of inari
beetle sumo wrestling is also the inspiration for Pokemon, lol.

15:07 They're probably large chunks of rock salt, to turn the salt throwing you describe after this into an attack and a show of strength.
The soot sprites were one Ghibli reference, but so was the practice dummy. It has the same smile as the cursed scarecrow in Howl's Moving Castle.
ohhh that explains why Spiralington Mc Spiral the Spiral Boy's Kamehameha is a Whirpool ball of energy
This video is really reinforcing the idea that Japanese make puns so much, it just becomes a habit and not even as a joke. It happens to be funny lol
15:06 they look like rocks...Rock Salt perhaps?
I feel like I need to be pulling out a notebook and taking notes for this. This is genuinely really fascinating
11:50 It reminds me of the Onikabuto tournament in Genshin Impact

I thought the smiling practice dummies might be a reference to assassination classroom and Koro sensei. The color and big smile was what gave me that vibe
Alright but now we definitely need a part 3!
Ponya is an odd one, despite the pun in her name, she's actually designed to look like a red panda not a tanuki
At 10:05 the straw dummy in front of the swords looks like Korosensei from Assassination Classroom.
5:09 i guess thats what Gaim Kachidoki is based on then cause that form´s shoulder and leg armor is really big
That’s a rhino beetle, not a stag beetle-but both kinds of beetles are awesome, and I love that they made such a cool beetle sumo allusion

Ogre 2: Your good sense of humor

Polteageist from Pokémon I reckon
welp we got part 2, now time for part 3 (:
Very informative

Kensei, Orochi, Aramusha (Ronin), Hitokiri (Executioner), Kyoshin (Yamabushi), & Sohei.
Wonder if the items being thrown near the end were rocks made of salt
