To echo many of the comments here, I think it's difficult to be truly objective about this music, songs that have been the soundtrack to our lives. Personally, I have been both the "Many Too Many" guy, and also had someone invite me back for (literally in her words) _"Something special after if I liked"..._ (You know who you are - and I'll *never* forget it!)

The band made a conscious decision to shorten songs, which is fine, but I do feel that some songs lack musical depth, as you mentioned ballad of big, and scenes from a night's dream, but both lady lies, Joe and down and out could do with a more progressive arrangements. Highlights for me are Undertow, Motherlode, Burning rope and follow you, follow me, the rest is a bit bland tbh....

I don't think one should try and be objective at all, Lee. Taste is subjective and might get close to objectiveness ONLY IF YOU START FROM YER OWN SELF. No way out, no intellectual effort to 'criticise' songs, it leads nowhere. Instinct will never lie nor fail.

I am in the minority on this one. This is not only my favorite Genesis album, it is my favorite album PERIOD! My desert island album. It has a different sound. There is almost a "drone" sound in many of the songs. All of the tunes are perfect to me. The bass pedals, guitars, keyboard, everything AND vocals of course! It has a genuine magic and "aura" to it. HOWEVER, there's always "Seconds Out"! I saw them for the first time in concert for this album in Houston. It was the last show in the states of the tour and was recorded for the King Biscuit Flower Hour.

It seems that for many of us this is a deeply personal album. I’m no exception. In 1978 I was 14 and had been uprooted from my hometown on Long Island to the completely foreign LA San Fernando Valley. Genesis was my third parent throughout my teens, and this album was a cold, wintery dreamscape that accompanied my sadness and longing for my home, all of my friends, and even the comforts of New York winters when warm fires, hot cocoa, my now distant relatives, and lots of blankets during sleepover dates with friends that were all gone.
I think that through the almost five decades that have passed this album still comforts me while also acknowledging winter’s chill, and the sadness that often returns through life’s seasons.
I’m not saying anything negative about this beautiful album. It brings me many happy and bouncy feeling too. I suppose there are many layers to what this music means to me, and does to me.
Many too many of you know just what I mean.

Difficult really, given how the band evolved so much. It's almost like asking the same question in relation to Fleetwood Mac. Plus if I'm being honest, And Then There were Three was the first Genesis album that I bought and that often ads bias. I also really like A Trick of The Tail too. So it's probably fair to say I favour post Gabriel Genesis.

"Say It's Alright Joe" is, in my opinion, the most underrated Genesis song ever. It's beautifully structured, with the sad, meterless verses sharply contrasting with the exasperating choruses, not to mention the lovely atmospheric fade-out. Phil really gets inside the lyric, and the stage act he did was one of the few times Genesis used theatrics after Gabriel left. Yet, many fans say this song is boring and that it's one they always skip.

The intro and outro of Down and Out are extraordinary. It was the first track on And then There Were Three. Tony always saved his best ideas for Genesis.
I'm a big Hackett fan. As a guitarist myself, Hackett had a vivid imagination for memorable ornamentation that enhanced every track in Genesis' output. With Steve gone, I was sceptical of Mike's ability to play lead guitar lines.
I think Mike did pretty well. However, i was initially unimpressed by the album. I liked Down And Out because of Tony. I also appreciated Mike's guitar parts. Phil's vocals showed him to be growing into his lead singing Roll too. His drumming was, as usual, wonderful.
I loved Deep In The Motherload. My second favorite track. Many Too Many is classic Tony Banks. My choice for 3rd favorite track on the album. There are no bad songs on And Then There Were Three, but it was not as good as what came before. It seemed they were trying too hard to prove that they had not lost their touch. I felt it was a bit too labored. However, I thought the same about the second half of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Eventually, I realized that "Three" was truly the first Genesis record of true transition. Abacab would be the second. Both albums ushered in the Genesis that became known the world over. At that point, my criticism as a fan became irrelevant. They had miraculously become a 'people's band's, growing more popular than I could have imagined, as a 70's prog curmudgeon.
So, in short, I salute Tony, Mike and Phil. Chester and Darryl delivered in concert to massive acclaim. It may not have been the classic 70's lineup, but their success proved that Genesis was a truly enduring band. They delivered quality music throughout their time as a 'vital' band. For that alone, I will always be a proud Genesis fan.

I think this is one of the band's best - the perfect intersection of the Gabriel-era's sound with the latter Phil Collins era and follow-up DUKE... just the best blend of fantastical story-driven prog and a more rock/pop edge.

This album by Genesis was my first and only purchase, I have it on CD, & I think that out of conflict can come brilliant ideas, I also bought Peter Gabriel’s first solo LP, I was amazed by how much Phil Collins sounded like Peter, I feel confident that the Band continued on with Phil on lead vocals was a brilliant idea.
I still listen to and enjoy Then there were Three, a great LP title as well, Follow you Follow me, a Hit in the US put Genesis in the spot light. I also Love the Hackett & Squire LPs. I never got to see Genesis live, I am sure that they were Fantastic. YES on the other hand I have seen about 20 concerts, and thru many line ups, but the music still seems to be very ahead of its time even today. Bravo 👏 the 70s.

I did not know much about Genesis, but a friend of a friend came up with this album, it must have been around 1980 and I was 15. Fantastic album and I still love it very much. After ATTWT I went on to Wind and Wuthering, another fantastic album, and then Seconds Out, a third fantastic album!!! These three albums are to this day my favorite Genesis-albums!!!

Then there three is my all time favourite album. But one song, Undertow, I only ever play at Christmas. I'd just bought the record and I took it round to a girl l knew who lived nearby. Her dad had died of a sudden heart attack, then a few months later her mum was diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of cancer. So at agreed 18 or 19 she was like sole carer of her older mentally handicapped sister.
I put the record on and she told me she was struggling with trying to sell the family home to provide an income for the two of them. She then told me she'd been diagnosed with the same kind of cancer as her mother. She said this was the worst Christmas of her young life.
The words "If this was the worst day of your life, my friend,
Tell me, what do you think you would do then........"
She was wrong about one thing, that wasn't the worst Christmas of her life. She died a year later on Christmas day. There was no-one in the family to take care of the sister so she went into local authority care. The house was sold and she disappeared from my life.
She did lie down on the ground and let the tears run from her. But, she also stood up to the blow that fate had struck upon her, and for a year fought like Hell, but in the end it was all too much.

In researching these comments I have stumbled upon similar comments as this. I would say that Genesis (along with perhaps only a handful of bands) manages to tap into the emotional core of our lives. Some of their lyrics resonate with me in similar ways - for better and worse. Thanks for sharing this,

So in March 1978 a friend named Steve called and said “you have such horrible taste in music, I want to help you. So will you go to San Diego with me to see Genesis in concert?” Weird way to ask someone on a date 😂I was a senior in high school and I fell in love that night - not with the guy who took me, but with Mike, Phil and Tony and Genesis altogether. Which still lasts to this date. I’ve seen them multiple times in concert since then but I’ll always remember that night in San Diego. So thanks, Steve - wherever you are !

The strange thing for me about this record is when it actually came out I really didn't like it, and like many fans the departure of Steve left this record lacking something. However, 45 years later I have gone 360 on this and as the years have gone by I appreciate it much more. There are some brilliant songs on here notably Down And Out, Burning Rope and my fave Depp In The Motherlode. The band also over the years seemed to have little love for this record as apart from the 78 and 80 tour, they hardly played anything live from it apart from Follow You Follow Me. Great vid thanks very much for posting.

My own journey as a Genesis fan began in 1981 with Abacab, Duke, and then Three Sides Live. After that, I caught up on the Gabriel years, plus Trick and Wind. I came to this album last up to that point in their discography, and it struck me as though the band hadn't yet figured out how to write as a three piece. There are some very good moments here, but like you I found it disjointed, uneven, and confused, perhaps reflecting a bit of a power struggle for writing dominance.
As a Banksian and vintage keyboard aficionado, it is pleasing to hear Tony's Hammond Organ, Mellotron, and ARP Pro-Soloist make a few final appearances, along with the first use of the Yamaha CP-70, Roland VP-03, Polymoog and ARP 2600.

"Down and Out" was played more than "a few times". It looks to have been played consistently from late March until the end of May. "Ballad of Big" replaced it but "Down and Out" would return sporadically in June and July. 30+ times out of 95 concerts on the tour.
I believe that in a 1983 interview for Keyboard magazine, Banks said that "Burning Rope" was originally about 10 minutes long but was pared down to keep it from becoming too much of a rehash of "One For the Vine".
    Thanks for another fun commentary.

45 years later, I can see how this album has merits if examined all on its own. But 45 years ago, it wasn't released in a vacuum. Having been a fan since Trespass was released, TTW3 confirmed what was suspected with W&W...that Tony was indeed exerting himself as the One True Artist of the band, who would tolerate Rutherford as long as he remained a staunch ally of his (for right or for wrong.) And of course, this is exactly what history proved. His description of Collins and Hackett as "junior members", the utter refusal to allow the touring members to do anything that wouldn't be done with a backing track today, and ultimately the failure to see that what makes great music great is the people, not the genius. Banks always shone brightly when there was a collaborator, even though collaboration was usually forced upon him. Many geniuses need a No Man, not people who pander to them.
This album ended my love affair with the band. Yes, Duke had hope, but it also had too much hollow pop (whose popularity was due to promotion more than anything.) Subsequent albums had fewer and fewer truly bright spots, until it all just became drudge. Or to put it another way, became Banks solo albums with a big brand name.
It's remarkable that all these years later, Hackett is able to perform so many of Banks' compositions with fire, energy, and originality, largely due to his ability to let his band shine as well, while Banks insists that he's unable to understand why anyone would want to hear "old" music. Tony, it's not old in their hands; it's new and fresh with every show. Pay attention.
The story of Rock is one of collaboration and ego. Greatness comes from the former, irrelevance and oblivion come from the latter. Ultimately, Genesis achieved oblivion, in spite of so much greatness in their music.

    • @krob5375
      @krob5375 Месяц назад +1

I agree with much of what you said. Tony's arrogance is a bit frustrating to listen to in interviews at times. Always viewing his songs as the best on any album and has sparse praise to the others contributions. But to be fair, without him Genesis would have ceased to be because as you say, he is a musical genius. I do however like a lot of the songs on and past this album. Genesis is in my top 5 fav albums of their's and the Brazilian is probably my fav instrumental song. But Steve brought a depth and quality to their music that they never got back. Darryl is a good guitarist in his own right, but he is very different from Steve. Steve's playing was atmospheric, complementary of, but also strengthening the music. The fact that all of Steve's parts were played by Darryl but all future guitar parts were played only by Mike speaks volumes of the weird dynamic created when Steve left.

This is one of my favorite Genesis albums. It's a keyboard album. It's a Tony Banks album. And the songs never go on too long. And The Lady Lies is one of my all time favorite songs - topped only by Many too Many. When I first heard this album my parents were in the middle of a nasty divorce, and Many too Many just spoke to me. That, and Please Don't Ask became anthems for me. Then again, Say its Alright Joe is one of my least favorite, as is Follow you Follow me. So this album has huge ups and downs

Been a Genesis fan since the early 70’s. Have every album and been to every concert. Back then the fear was when Gabriel left the band would fail. On the contrary, they have become my most favorite band and I believe it was a good move from the stage costumes to what they have become. Chester might be Phil’s drum equal. At least before his “injury “ where he could not drum for the last domino tour.

Rael, you’ve done it again! Another belter!
You’ve got so much insight and information you need here to create a brilliant documentary about Genesis. Let’s hope some TV people will see and recognise your work.
I love this album so much as for me its one of their best. I suppose because it was the first Genesis one I heard. Nevertheless, its really powerful and full of magic and story telling. It’s opener, Down and out, Phil’s drumming is colossal, mixed with Tony’s synths. And then the amazing Undertow. If only Tony’s long Rachmaninov like intro that made it only onto his solo album got Married together it’s a masterpiece along side the sublime lyrics.
The whole album is brilliant, though I know many opinions differ. Even the album cover that Storm Thorgerson said was a bit of a mish mash conjures up for me a melancholic magic, an almost otherworldliness with the night sky and light play. Thank you for doing this. I’ll send you a few wine tokens.

I always found the production a bit blurry and dense, which gave it a mesmerizing eerie quality. You touched on it too “fuzzy and metallic”. There are some truly beautiful moments here, but you do get a sense of a band trying to feel their way around. I still listen to it quite a bit.
