Dear 50s Kid, I realize you have a disclaimer that says your videos are for entertainment only but I thought you should know that I am very greatful to you. I’m a single mom with a very tight budget (as in ramen daily) type of budget. I have a 2003 BMW 325i which’s getting old just like me and if (sadly) regularly has something go wrong with it. Just last night I drove out to pick up my son and my power steering pump died. Car started shaking when turning the steering wheel, no power steering and I freaked! I watched several videos trying to determine the cause and once I decided it was the pump, I watched this video on its replacement. This morning we walked to the store, picked up the pump, fluid and clamp. A few hours and a terribly sore back later, my car is fixed. Just so you know, this is not the first time your videos have saved my car. 😁😁😁😁😁
@@mronemanband1 Why ? If she can fix the car herself, Focus is NO comparison to an E46. I wouldn't tell you to sell your focus and buy a push bike because it's cheaper.
Just wanted to make it known that you are one of only 3 channels I trust on diy bmw maintenance. Your videos have kept my e46(s) going for years longer than they would have if left to my own devices. Thank you so much.
16:00 VERY IMPORTANT WARNING! make sure the pulley bolts are tight. i replaced the powersteering pump last summer, and mines just flew off last night and the bolts fell off, so please everybody make sure the bolts are secure and if necessary after a few months come back and check the bolts just in case they dont fly off, i learned this the hard way, i posting this so you dont have to go through this and be stranded in the middle of the road.
Mr 50's kid, you have been such a huge help for me over the years and you've saved me a lot of money too so thank you very much all your efforts are a appreciated thank you
Just did this today. I have the LF 20 but the shaft wasn’t broken. I replaced all the hoses and the reservoir as well. I live your videos. Makes it almost idiot proof!
Hey man I just want to say thank you for this video from a guy that never touches his car or does any mechanical s*** to his car I did exactly what you said on this video and my car is perfect. Thank you very much
You can get the tool off amazon for $20 for the BMW quick disconnects, it takes about 2 seconds to get it off. Also, make sure when you fill the fluid, leave the belt off and turn the pump by hand and turn the wheel back and forth before starting the engine.
"I dont know if I will be able to Tap That from this angle" had a flash back to college sorry. Lol But Your great with the e46...Thanks for your insights.
Such a great help. Must admit I was more confident before I watched. A lot of tight spaces there and I've just added an impact driver to the must have tool list! Anyway, thanks man!
Just a heads up for any pre-lci guys. The OG LF20 has a better "sportier" steering feel than the updated LF30 pump. A bonus is not having to change out the line but roll of the dice on the shaft of the LF20.
I just replaced my power steering pump and noticed that the striped bracket bolt you are referring to in your video requires a washer in order for it to fit properly in the bolt housing. If you don't use a washer the (to long) bolt will hit the back of the housing and will strip or fell like its stripped when it pops backward one thread. Where the washer goes during repair is unknown..lol (The repair was successful and made a unbelievable difference LF20 LUK)
Literally have the exact same issue on my car. Changed 3 pulleys and still had rattling. Discovered it was the power steering pump. Gonna get it changed soon
I have a 2002 330xi and there is no room underneath to remove the pump! I had to remove the alternator from above in order to remove the hoses and get to the rear bolt. Otherwise good video.
I have a suggestion for all you DIYers out there. We all have a tendency to loosen bolts then take them the rest of the way out with your nose pickers. Use one of those battery tools to do this and save you finger tips. When you reach your seventies you will still have feeling in the tips!
Great job fixing the pump. Yes, I would suggest that you replace the lines and the reservoir too because of the metal shavings etc. Great job though and thanks for sharing your knowledge 50s kid.
I want to add that if you have the LF20 pump you're going to need a crawfoot extension to get the high pressure line off. Also, it's a hell of a lot easier to get to the banjo bolts from the top if you take off the CAI and surrounding intake boots. Also, if you're doing this job it is recommended you replace the power steering filter/reservoir as well and flush the old power steering fluid out so you don't contaminate your system and for it to last, otherwise you're gonna be running old fluid and you may shorten the life of all that work and money spent. Also, if you're doing this job, please replace the banjo bolt o-rings otherwise you're taking a chance on your system leaking power steering fluid. I should know, I just did this job not long ago after having the same issue as the 50s kid.
Hi, your video is really detailed. I am having a power steering pump problem and I just bought a new pump but the challenge here is my car BMW e90. Can you please make a new video on how to replace a power steering pump. I will really appreciate it
Love your videos, most of the things that you fix in your videos I've been needing to do. I clicked the link for the lf30 power steering pump but it says out of stock, you think you can tell me where I can get that kind of power steering pump ? And thanks for the advice about the fill plug last video finally got it off yesterday, THANKS FOR THE HELP 🙂
Hey there. I really love your videos and I actually watch them when I have spare time even if they are not relevant to my car problems! I will say you have some real balls getting into your transmission and taking the thing off not once but three times!!!!! You rock!! Anyway, in reference to this specific video, I also stripped that stupid little bolt on the power steering pump and I have to do the oil pan gasket change soon. How did you ever fix it? I have looked on Realoem.com and the bolt size is 8mm so the next size is 9mm but impossible to find. Thanks, and keep doin' what you're doin"!
Any chance you have the link to the actual bolt? I am missing this bolt as well and thought it originally was one of the oil filter housing gasket but I have tested all three sizes and they do not fit in properly.
First of all just want to say thanks for all the amazing videos, you truly have helped me immensly and I know lots of others. Couple things I ran into on mine that threw me a bit and I'm not sure if mine was some weird anamoly or due to a bolt head being sheared off. When I got to the step of actually removing the pump I saw only the 13mm bolt head on the left side. There was no bold head on the right side. Looking from the back I could see what appears to be an inverted torx nut? Are some built like this or would that be a way to fix the bolt head being sheared off? Reason I ask is according to a online step by step article you remove the back bracket bolt and then remove the right side of the front bracket bolt from the rear-but it was a regular 13mm bolt head not an inverted torx. Did not have any inverted torx sockets so I just removed the pump by taking out the 3 torx bolts on front, and since the shaft was completely sheared off pump was very easy to get out. I sure hope the shaft on this new pump is more substantial, OEM immer was out of the AE pump that is supposed to be beefier. Also my back bracket was the type with only one bolt on to the pump, is that because mine is an LF 20, back bracket is different on LF 30? I am definitely gonna swap my hydraulic tensioner for the manual one also. Thanks again, it worked out great!
why is it that my power steering pump on my 04 x5 4.4i was the same as the e46? I was watching your tutorial of the power steering pump replacement on the e53 and realized it was completely different
Great video. For rhd cars its eaiser just to buy same pump as already fitted to your car as getting new hose is a nightmare if you don't go dealership. They want £150 for a hose 😵
Mr 50s kid, did you by chance figure out what that bolt was that was missing for the power steering pump on the bottom of the car? I am missing it as well and I bought oil filter housing bolts because I thought it was part of that but now seeing this video I am wrong and unsure of what bolt I need to get
50, can you please tell me if a handling problem could be caused by a steering pump? Almost like a steering hesitation if that makes since. I bought a inexpensive pump off Amazon to save money, worked fine at first except for a small whinnying noise, but now I have a handling problem while going over uneven roads. Sway bar links, control arms, tie rods, and rack and pinion are all changed. The only thing left is the pump from China. What ya think?
I noticed the bracket with the missing bolt is out of align with the bolt hole on my car. Does this mean the pump/pully is out aswell? Gunna look further into it as I'd imagine the rest of the bolts are in there so surely can't be
Hi 50s Kid. After watching your video I started doing the PS pump replacement. Then I noticed a faulty hose where the fluid leaked out, so maybe the pump is good after all. If the shaft holding the pulley is firm does this mean the pump is OK? Thanks for the great video...the best on youtube! You make it look easy!
My steering on my Bmw E46 touring 2001 is really hard, almost non responsive, and i think my steering rack is at fault, but could the power steering pump also be broken?
I bought an old 325i and steering is very stiff? is it becasue its a sport package? and do i always have to replace the pump or can i just change the oil?
I have a 535i xDrive with dynamic drive and the power steering pump is full of power steering oil. I want to pull it out to rebuild it. Manuals say, I should take out the ac-compressor out first. But I do not want to do that, because I do not have the machinery and the experience to empty and recharge the AC-System. Is there a way to take out the pump without pulling the Ac-Compressor? Thank you!
Do you happen to know the part number for the high pressure hose when you switch from the LF20 pump to the LF30 pump? I thought I ordered the different hose, but the one that came was exactly what I took off of the old LF20 pump! Thanks!
Yeah I'm planning on grabbing one from a junkyard before the rebuild. I also need a new driver side engine mount bracket because the hold for the oil dipstick tube is stripped. Could do a helicoil but it's probably cheaper to get new parts.
@ 3:14 my connector on that hose above your hand is broken like yours. How would I replace? Do I need a whole new hose, or can I just get that connector piece? Please respond🙏
Ok I have a quick question. All I need to replace is the pulley (wheel part) itself. The band snapped and broke a piece of it off. Do I need to take all that out or can I just undo the tree bolts and replace the pulley?
Hey brother on my 323i I’m hearing a small hiss sound as well as a slight rattle...almost like a lose bolt or screw inside my car when I turn the wheel. I checked my fluid level and it’s ok but I’m going to flush it and see if it helps. Any suggestions on what you think it may be?
Minute 8:20 where can i find those 2 brackets you transfer to the new and the power steering pump itsef for the same model of BMW? I would appreciate the information please
i plan on tackling this project on my e46 in a few days. Before i get to my pump how could i figure out if i have a LF-20 or an LF-30? i didn't have enough clearance to check which one i had.
Got a question for you 50’s. I replaced my power steering pump, started my car, and it sucked the fluid right down straight away with a lot of air. Btw, I did all the things your supposed to do before starting it. Anyway, created a huge air pocket somewhere in my system and I can’t get rid of it. My power steering isn’t working and there is a lot of tiny air bubbles I can see in the reservoir. It also kinda cherns in the filling tank when the car is started so I know the pump is doing something. How can I go about getting this huge air pocket out of the system?
I'm getting ready to change my pump. In the past with steering pumps that I've changed, we have always started the engine and turn the steering lock to lock to help purge air out of the system. Try that a few times. Good luck!
What size is the long one anyone know? Mines broke off and the piece ended up staying inside the bracket so I got a new bracket but lost the bolt anyone know what size I need to buy? Thanks
Hello 50s amazing videos ,so I own a 330ci bmw 2003 I recently hit a pot hole and my car suddenly stopped turning it is very hard to turn left or right I check the belts seems ok I did notice that the atf reservoir is full and it don't look like it filter or working properly do you think it might be the ps pump. I also notice that my control arm bushing are in bad shape as well I seen a video of yours on how to replace those so I am going to do that soon, but my question for you is do you think the ps pump is gone? Thanks in advance
You probably have the LF20. The shaft shears off on those. If you take your belt off and just try pulling the pulley out from the pump--you will know right away if it's broken off. Don't pull it all the way out or your fluid will leak all over the place.
My power steering on my 323i E46 only works well when the car gets warm. After its been sitting in the cold it is real stiff. Then when it gets warm it works perfect. My fluid was incredibly dirty, it was dark grey. I flushed the system and got it red again. Didn't solve my problem at all. Could it be my pump? What other components could be at play here if its not the pump? I did change my pump about 50,000 miles ago. Thanks.
what is the make and model of that angle drill you were using? It looked like it was a cordless electric one. am I right? I have been looking for one for tight areas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Awesome video!!!! I have learned so much from you. Keep up the great work....
$hiftyZ, there is at least one thread on E46Fanatics.com about your issue, you'll have to search. IIRC they used needle noise plyers to bust out the plastic ring then picked out the metal. Not sure. But you will definitely need a new hose.
So I replaced my PS pump and put in a new reservoir and now I don't have any power steering and there's no circulation. Do you have any idea what happened?
You have to bleed the system properly. To do so, jack the front end of the car up(both front wheels of the ground. Fill reservoir up and then crank your car up. Turn the steering wheel from left to right to get the air out of the system.
For my car, suddenly it was extremely hard to steer and park and on turning it makes a knocking noise(not too loud). Initial 0-25mph pickup makes a louder noise than usual. After removing the belt and jiggling the pump shaft by hand makes a small clicking noise but it doesn't move in or out, so doesn't look like it is broken. Not sure if fluid flow is choked or any other thing to diagnose and how?
I checked more, pump is fine and creates pressure when running. When pump and pressure hose is disconnected all fluid comes out of pump and nothing from the pressure hose. On moving steering some fluid goes back to the reservoir and comes out of pump. Could pressure hose be bad or rack-n-pinion be bad?
+50sKid your my go to for videos, always informative and well done .I have a question so i had my power steering replaced, but since day one the pump has been groaning loud and seems to be harder to steer at times. Its a 2004 330ci ZHP and i want sure if i should put CHF or ATF its not on the cap. I went with a euro approved power steering fluid that is approved for my car because a mechanic told me too.Not sure if he was wrong and its the wrong fluid or i was sold a bad pump.Is there a way to check the only thing i can think of is flush it and try ATF.Ive check online, check manual and called BMW i got no were.Another mechanic said he thought he seen micro flakes in the reservoir tank. Thanks again i just replaced my fuel filter and fuel pump from your videos.
I have a 2000 328i with a lf20 pump. I replaced it a year ago because the shaft sheared off....again same problem! My question to you is... can I upgrade to a lf30 pump and high pressure hose and will I have to make any modifications other than removal and assembly? One more...how do I know if the rack is bad?
+Terry Anderson the rack should be fine. You can replace it with the lf30 for sure you need the different hose like you said. Remember that the pump bracket is different
50sKid thank you! I enjoy watching your videos and working on my own vehicle! When I did the replacement last year, it was really easy and I saved myself about $500 doing it myself! Thanks again
have replaced PS pump a few months ago.. and being a person who wants to know how things work I pulled mine apart ...not that impressed with the workings inside for the load they do.think the vanes could be a but heavier in size and by their size .wear seems to be to one point of the housing making rotation notchy.just looks like a regular service replacement item
I pulled the old one apart. Didn't see any abnormal wear, actually. I've pulled 3 or 4 other pumps apart (different pumps) and noticed about the same size vanes and same wear on the vanes as well.
I love your mind. You inspect the vehicle at junkyards and see what future common repairs will be. Smart. Hey. Tell me why. Why are all the well maintained perfect interior vehicles are always gray in color
Im actually experiencing and vibration and noise while parked, just today when turning steering L to R. I describe it as a force feedback type of noise and vibration. In aviation terms it's like a shaker stick sensation. Is this similar to what you experienced when the pump started to fail?
I too just completed this - LF 20 - replacement, mainly due to overall stiff steering. The OEM shaft was intact, ...maybe the vanes had shared on the previous unit? Unfortunately, after the replacement, the steering is stiff as if it was only partially power-assisted. ' any thoughts?
Hi, my power steering feels hard to turn during reverse and lower speeds below 30kMpH speed especially when you may tight turns in and out of parking. I changed the pump, hoses, refurbished the rack, changed all arms and bushes, changed new tyres, changed pulleys tensioner, belts, changed front absorbers and mountings, almost everything including tie rod inner and outer. It's still hard to turn. I drive a 520i 2.2 liter, 2003 last batch. Need your advise.
Sounds like there may be something in the lines--something blocking them. I would suggest a complete overhaul--pull out every single line including and especially the cooling loop that goes in front of the radiator and blow them out and/or poke the clog out with a wire.
I need to replace the high pressure hose, not sure what pump I'm running I've never had to replace it so I assume it's LF20. Is the hose specific to the pump? as I have seen 2 diff kinds of hoses shaped differently where they connect at the pump
my power steering was just messed up one morning out of the blue. I added little bit of fluid and the steering got better but no where near where it should be, I still have to wrestle the wheel when It comes to parking. what do u think it can be? there isn't a leak after a day of driving weeks of driving around. could it be the pump?
thank you for this. another problem ive had prior to this was that my engine wouldn't turn over normally. it would crank for a few seconds, I turn the key back and then forward kinda like reset my key and then the engine would turn over. some days it would crank longer then some.
I have a noise coming from the pulley but when I tried to replace it, its a different kind of pump (mine just have a Bolt in the middle) do you know if there is a way to replace it?
If your short on funds, it can work. Not sure if I'd trust a pump, but there are a lot of little things I pick up super cheap to have as spares, like external temp sensors for$5 or DISA valves in working condition. I like to go and pick up little things, like those damn wire clamps for the electrical connectors used throughout the car or that tend to fly off into engine compartment, never to be found. Plus various nuts and bolts.

the line that hooks into the cooling loop isn’t part of the powered steering pump right ? that’s like a whole different thing ?
I noticed the bracket with the missing bolt is out of align with the bolt hole on my car. Does this mean the pump/pully is out aswell? Gunna look further into it as I'd imagine the rest of the bolts are in there so surely can't be
Hi 50s Kid. After watching your video I started doing the PS pump replacement. Then I noticed a faulty hose where the fluid leaked out, so maybe the pump is good after all. If the shaft holding the pulley is firm does this mean the pump is OK? Thanks for the great video...the best on youtube! You make it look easy!
Yep
Yo. Do you do a video on a 2004 e83 power steering pump removal . Mine just split in half it seems.. or its the hose tail joint. Cheers
Exelent video. Thanks for share your time and experince doing a great job.
Thanks!
I think you have to fix that back bolt cose pump bibrate without it and that why the inside shaft got bad though!
I sheared off the bolt in the back when I did mine too. I tried but failed at drilling it out, so I ended up buying a new oil filter housing
Yeah I'm planning on grabbing one from a junkyard before the rebuild. I also need a new driver side engine mount bracket because the hold for the oil dipstick tube is stripped. Could do a helicoil but it's probably cheaper to get new parts.
hi 50 skid , I need to replace my Lf20 with Lf30 but my squestion is will the bracket of lf20 will fit lf 30?
@ 3:14 my connector on that hose above your hand is broken like yours. How would I replace? Do I need a whole new hose, or can I just get that connector piece? Please respond🙏
Ok I have a quick question. All I need to replace is the pulley (wheel part) itself. The band snapped and broke a piece of it off. Do I need to take all that out or can I just undo the tree bolts and replace the pulley?
2023 video still very relevant 💪🏿
How many miles are on your 330? how is that thing running now considering you replaced everything? I'm in the process of doing the same.
Happiest e46 in the world
if doing the 20 to 30 pump swap are the mounting brackets interchangable or would i need to source a set of 30 brackets?
Did it solve the vibration issue too?
Good luck!
Will the lf30 fit on my 01 330ci or does it need modification?
Since I’m replacing my power steering rack and pump do u use Atf or chf11?
What size is the long one anyone know? Mines broke off and the piece ended up staying inside the bracket so I got a new bracket but lost the bolt anyone know what size I need to buy? Thanks
So when you have now LF30 does the steering wheel turns easier than LF20?
Thanks.
Weak pump
Does the high pressure hose just slot back into place or does it require some force? I can't seem to pop it back in there
weird...on my 2005 330ci, the long bolt threads on from the rear of the pump and then you cap the front off with a nut.
Can you tell me what brand/type of power steering fluid you use for your E46? Thanks!
Ryan Worthington Most of these older bmws use atf
what is the make and model of that angle drill you were using? It looked like it was a cordless electric one. am I right? I have been looking for one for tight areas. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Awesome video!!!! I have learned so much from you. Keep up the great work....
That is the milwaukee 2457 and you can pick one up in my Amazon store: astore.amazon.com/50skid-20
And they save lots of time, bought mine after watching the kid. I think he has a video on the new model.
Did you take off the fan and shroud
Do you have to pull the fan, I had mine replaced with a salvage pump only 3 months ago, I'm gonna do it myself this time, and should I get a lf30?
Yes you have to pull the pan. If you change pumps you have to change the pressure line as well
Love this guy ❤
What is the part number for the lf30 hardline hose please !
17:04 I snapped my plastic clip completely off, is there any way I'll be able to remove that pipe now? It looks almost impossible to me...
$hiftyZ, there is at least one thread on E46Fanatics.com about your issue, you'll have to search. IIRC they used needle noise plyers to bust out the plastic ring then picked out the metal. Not sure. But you will definitely need a new hose.
I got a 2002 325i theres a big motor fan in the way of the belts i need a special rinch/lock kit do i...
I have a 2002 330ci, should I get an lf20 or lf30?
So I replaced my PS pump and put in a new reservoir and now I don't have any power steering and there's no circulation. Do you have any idea what happened?
You have to bleed the system properly. To do so, jack the front end of the car up(both front wheels of the ground. Fill reservoir up and then crank your car up. Turn the steering wheel from left to right to get the air out of the system.
Didn't have to remove fan clutch?
Does a e46 that seated for 4 months cause having hard steering wheel to turn?
+50sKid your my go to for videos, always informative and well done
.I have a question so i had my power steering replaced, but since day one the pump has been groaning loud and seems to be harder to steer at times.
They take ATF, so just your basic dexron. If someone saw flakes in the reservoir that doesn't sound good for the new pump. It may be damaged.
Thank you so much man🤟🏼
if the reservoir is leaking why did not replace the cap o ring?
I love your mind. You inspect the vehicle at junkyards and see what future common repairs will be. Smart. Hey. Tell me why. Why are all the well maintained perfect interior vehicles are always gray in color
Im actually experiencing and vibration and noise while parked, just today when turning steering L to R. I describe it as a force feedback type of noise and vibration. In aviation terms it's like a shaker stick sensation.
Is this similar to what you experienced when the pump started to fail?
If it happens when you turn the steering wheel, there's basically nothing else it could be besides the power steering pump
Blockage in the lines maybe? You could pull them off and blow them out with compressed air.
Blockage in the lines maybe? You could pull them off and blow them out with compressed air.
I replaced the pump, but the nosie is stay... no air bubles in the fluid, level is on max what cause this problem?
Hunadamxd where and what kinds of noise is it making
What type of ATF should be used?
What kind of ATF fluid did you use?
my power steering was just messed up one morning out of the blue. I added little bit of fluid and the steering got better but no where near where it should be, I still have to wrestle the wheel when It comes to parking. what do u think it can be? there isn't a leak after a day of driving weeks of driving around. could it be the pump?
Yeah probably the pump.
thank you for this. another problem ive had prior to this was that my engine wouldn't turn over normally. it would crank for a few seconds, I turn the key back and then forward kinda like reset my key and then the engine would turn over. some days it would crank longer then some.
I have a noise coming from the pulley but when I tried to replace it, its a different kind of pump (mine just have a Bolt in the middle) do you know if there is a way to replace it?
Are you sure you're not talking about the a/c compressor?
50sKid I am pretty sure it was the steering pump, from a front view is at RH side in the bottom, and when I remove the line hydraulic come from it.
Is it really worth it to get junkyard parts? I feel like it would be impossible to know the condition and reliability of said parts
Probably not :-)
If your short on funds, it can work.
Well I am in need of a temperature sensor… Guess I’ll head to a junkyard and save myself 40 bucks!
