  • Watching a Jeremy Saulnier thriller is a unique experience. Each film offers an interesting yet differing take and viewpoint, all while chilling the audience to the bone. Blue Ruin explores revenge by way of a mysterious, unfurling plotline; Green Room is the best horror film about the Neo-Nazi punk rock scene ever made, ultimately curling back into subtle (hair-raising) satire, and Hold The Dark explores animalistic mythos and portrays Alaska as it’s never been seen on film before. In his new thriller Rebel Ridge, director Saulnier teams up with rising star Aaron Pierre (Foe, Mufasa: The Lion King) to explore themes of law and corruption sure to keep the audience in maddening, spell-binding suspense from beginning to end.
Rebel Ridge is set in the town of Shelby Springs. After Pierre’s level-headed Terry Richmond tries to post bail for his cousin, his savings are unjustly seized by corrupt local police Chief Sandy Burnne, played by Miami Vice's Don Johnson. With the help of court clerk Summer McBride (AnnaSophia Robb), Terry unearths a widespread conspiracy within Shelby Springs and sets to get his money back by any means necessary.
From sprinting through pyrotechnics to politely asking for a twelfth take in the sweltering heat, Collider’s Steven Weintraub discusses all things Rebel Ridge with Saulnier and Pierre.

Pierre is a fucking star. Its a real shame this isnt getting a theatrical release, because I bet it absolutely rips with a crowd. The "But then I was like, nah" moment had me cheering. For those unfamiliar with Saulnier, definitely check out his other films. Dude knows how to create tension. Blue Ruin is a special little movie.

I worked on Rebel Ridge and the director Jeremy isn’t lying either because he is someone that knows what he wants and doesn’t care how many takes it will take to get what his vision is. Great director. Awesome crew from top to bottom. Grateful to be apart of this film. Glad to see it come to life after 3 years of ups and downs. Great movie!

I can't even begin to describe the impact this movie had on me. Firstly, I was skeptical and i'll admit, entrenched in bias against what I perceived to be another simplistic, obvious good vs obvious bad movie. Black guy, wrongfully persecuted. "oh he's probably a vet, and w/ a little girl, and he's handsome, AND he'll take revenge." Oh... boy.... Was. I. Wrong. Within the first MINUTE, all of my gripping bias that made my skip over this film on netflix for few days was washed away. The first scene felt so natural. So pieced together perfectly, I was hooked. The struggle of a brotha trying to save his brother while being unfairly persecuted was crazy relatable as a black man myself. His acting was Spot..Frickin'...ON. I could almost FEEL myself as him at points in the film. This movie inspired me. His moral structure inspires and I was blown away every step of the way. Probably will be my only comment I ever make on youtube but Dang... was this a fantastic film. I could write so much more. I wish it was longer.

Loved this write-up dude! You should write movie reviews on Letterboxd, I'd read em. Please let me know if you're on that platform or if you decide to join. Im glad you enjoyed it, I highly suggest going back to.some of Saulniers other films, especially Blue Ruin. You'll dig it.

Truth is, they're receiving more exposure from streaming services and audience. I think they made a strategic move. Because now people want this film in theaters.
