Here's a little factoid that I don't think a lot of people know: Steve Cropper, who is playing guitar in the background for The Blues Brothers, was also the guitar player on the original recorded version by Sam & Dave.
Yep, and either Sam or Dave shouts “Play it, Steve!” in the original version just like John Belushi does here. I’ve always wondered why they weren’t able to get Booker T. Jones to join their band. If Al Jackson Jr. (the M.G.s’ drummer) hadn’t died in 1975, I’m betting they probably would’ve been able to get him.
Near as I can tell this is the only time they did this song, yet it's, arguably their best known song. I believe that's because this was their first national coverage, they'd been touring and playing clubs but this was their first national audience.
Actually, this was a one time skit on Saturday Night (Live) from 1978 that was the cold opening to the Week's Episode, and the genesis for everything that followed; the film, the Album, and the Tour.
I loved this band. I was at the show at Universal Amphitheatre when this album was recorded, actually at one of the two shows where the album was recorded. What a killer show!!! I of course recognized John and Dan though they introduced themselves as Jake and Elwood. They had not yet debuted the group so nobody had ever heard of them yet. I can't say enough about the band, absolutely outstanding!! One of my friends worked for Universal and asked me if I wanted to go to a concert. I asked "Who's Playing," she said you wouldn't know them if I told you but it is going to be a killer show, so I said yes and am I ever glad I did. Thank you for reacting to this.
The backup band with Steve Cropper on guitar and Duck Dunn on bass were part of the MG’s - the house band over at Stax records in Memphis. You’ve gotta watch the Blues Brothers movie- a complete homage to the best blues and soul singers.
LOL they were actually actors, not singers but one of the funniest SNL skits....EVer seen the movie? Freaking hillarious. Look it up..."Blues Brothers." You won't regret. Seriously, Aretha Franklin, James Brown....wish I could name them all....Lots of stars.
I was 10 or 11 when I first saw them sing this song. The way Belushi sang and performed it I thought he was singing "I am so mad," instead of "I'm a soul man." Thanks for recognizing an awesome performance.
Let's not forget some band members who laid down the sound: Matt "Guitar" Murphy; Steve "The Colonel" Cropper, Guitar; Donald "Duck" Dunn, Guitar (Bass); Tom "Bones" Malone, Sax (Baritone), Sax (Tenor), Trombone, Trumpet; Alan "Mr. Fabulous" Rubin, Trumpet; Steve Jordan, Drums; "Blue" Lou Marini, Sax (Tenor); Tom "Triple Scale" Scott, Sax (Tenor); and of course, Paul "The Shiv" Shaffer {The Late Show w/ David Letterman}, Hammond B3, Keyboards.
As you can see they were a major part of Saturday Night Live....they later made a Blues Brother movie and Minnie the mocher was a fun song in the movie.
The guy on the keyboards is none other than Paul Shaffer, who was the sidekick/bandleader to David Letterman in late night TV for 33 years. He was originally supposed to be involved in the film, but he had a scheduling conflict at the time of filming.
I think I almost saw a reaction.... Sam and Dave did Soul Man first and Steve Cropper played on the original and with the Blues Brothers. When John says "Play it Steve" it is something that happens on the original as well. John loved the fact that he was saying it to the actual Steve that was on the original release.
I love your reactions John. Is always fun to stop at your RUclips channel. I've seen all of your videos and will be waiting for the next one. Have a great day!
John Gibson Music glad you’ve seen it, is now a classic movie with so many famous musicians, from Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, James Brown and others. Chicagoans especially knows ever scene, funny to see years later and cameos of people who became famous later (like Steven Spielberg).
JOHN BULISHI WAS A ROCK STAR....IT WAS EVIDENT WHEN HE DID THE BLUES BROTHERS AS A JOKE....YOU CAN TELL HIS ROCK STARNESS WAS JUST OOZING OUT.....SOME PEOPLE ARE BORN ROCK STARS!
The original Nancy Sinatra "These Boots Were Made For Walking" video would be a fun one to react to if you ever want to try something little different.
@@johngibsonmusic Cool just be sure not to pick the Velvet 99 remix by VJ Carlos 21 because it's not Nancy Sinatra singing. Its some sound-alike singer with what sounds very much like possibly an Australian accent, put to the original video. Which of course, Nancy did not have, lol. The video labeled, Nancy Sinatra,These Boots Are Made for Walkin' (1966).HD is the real video and audio.
Back when Saturday Night Live was great! I miss John Belushi
Heidi Brinkley I miss John too! Great guy.

Yees!!!
@@johngibsonmusic Also Donald "Duck" Dunn played bass on the original and the Blues Brothers version.
Yeah knew that as he played with booker T and the MGs

RIP, John Belushi. Such talent.
🙏❤️
John is on a Mission from God!! ❤️🔥

Wow that's amazing Sherry!! 🙏 Thanks for sharing your story.
This is what I called America's music from the old days

I love the movie! ❤️
THE ORIGINAL MEN IN BLACK!!!!
LOL they were actually actors, not singers but one of the funniest SNL skits....EVer seen the movie? Freaking hillarious. Look it up..."Blues Brothers." You won't regret. Seriously, Aretha Franklin, James Brown....wish I could name them all....Lots of stars.
Love this! ❤️
All I can say is that was entertaining as hell lol. Awesome
They had a band so powerful it could turn goat (bleep) into gasoline
They got some legends behind them as well!
Wow I'm impressed you knew about the band behind them!
Yes! One if the finest musicians that were around at that time. Love them all 😊
There was a time when SNL was fun. Crazy but fun. I was a big fan in these days and seen it when it first was aired.
I was 10 or 11 when I first saw them sing this song. The way Belushi sang and performed it I thought he was singing "I am so mad," instead of "I'm a soul man." Thanks for recognizing an awesome performance.
Thank you very much for watching!
You thought he was singing I am so mad what you can't understand the English language he was obviously singing I'm a soul man what an idiot

This is when singers and entertainers who performed on SNL were GOOD and had TALENT!
As you can see they were a major part of Saturday Night Live....they later made a Blues Brother movie and Minnie the mocher was a fun song in the movie.
Yes they were! Love the movie!
You understand this was a comedy act from SNL, and a movie. The lead guitar is Steve Cropper, one of the best from his time.
The guy on the keyboards is none other than Paul Shaffer, who was the sidekick/bandleader to David Letterman in late night TV for 33 years. He was originally supposed to be involved in the film, but he had a scheduling conflict at the time of filming.
Great Information!

lennonscat Yeah that’s awesome! Love Steve Cropper. Great guy & guitar player.
Originally a Sam & Dave song brought back by the Blues Bros on Sat Night Live
I love your reactions John. Is always fun to stop at your RUclips channel. I've seen all of your videos and will be waiting for the next one. Have a great day!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it. Have a great day too!
Thanks for not jumping in through the video as others do!
😊🙏
You have to watch the orignal Blues Brothers movie
Already watched it. One of my fav movies ever!

I totally agree with you!
I agree Steve Jordan wonderful drummer all Stax studio musicians from Memphis some of the band played on the Sam and Dave version as well
Angel Yes! Love the fact that some of the guys played with Sam&Dave too! Steve Jordan is my fav drummer. His groove is so deep. Thanks for watching.
How about some luv for Dan's dancing. Big man gots some moves.
Yes!!
Actors and comedians and then this awesome. Too bad John Belushi OD.
They were so great! It so sad yes...
The Eagles are and have always be wonderful.
You resemble the famous actor and singer, Ricky Nelson.
Micheal Jackson stole many of their dance moves ;)
Can you please react to Karen Carpenter. She has the best female voice ever
Karen had an incredible voice!
The original Nancy Sinatra "These Boots Were Made For Walking" video would be a fun one to react to if you ever want to try something little different.
Thank you! I‘ll check it out for sure.
