Boss fights are core parts in Reborn now. Players really need to know what they are doing or they will suffer, especially if the goal is a no incapacitation + no death run.
Some boss fights are alright like the main goal is boss kill and said boss is a fragile magic unit like a wizard. Usually that means a hit squad and a boss rush strategy should suffice. That squad usually consists of flying units and units that can traverse difficult terrains. An example for such a squad is Canopus, a flying beast unit (to absorb enemy damage and protect the hit squad), a hawkman (with lobber skill like beast tamer), and maybe 2 ninjas (Denam can be one of them). For a quick boss kill this squad should be prepared with full MP heals and appropriate ranged finishing moves. Within 2 to 3 turns the boss should be dead.
Then there are some boss fights that are like Xaebos. All 4 buff cards, surrounded by clerics, rampart knights in front, and most of all, the boss hits hard and won't go down fast. When that happens the main goal is still boss kill but the fight will be dragged on a little. Some enemy peons will need to be killed before hitting on the boss, and for that items that inflict Weaken/Spellspoil are necessary to lower the boss's damage output so the player can earn some time to get rid of enemy attacker units that threaten your team's survival. After enemy's attackers are gone, the player can start to use item that inflict Breached status on the boss to lower defense for easier killing (or reuse Weaken/Spellspoil if it wears off). Then everyone unloads their finishing moves to kill the boss.
The last type of boss fights are duels. There are several duels in game in which Denam himself only can be used (or a few more units). These fights are few but are absolutely brutal, and the strategy/Denam's build should be planned individually. Sometimes there are terrains that can be abused, classes that work better in certain duels, and even the number of bosses/allies can be different. Denam usually needs to be really tanky so the knight class and the phalanx auto skill are recommended. A item that inflicts Weaken status will buy some time so the player can finish the bosses before they kill you. Unfortunately there are luck issues involved like the appearance of buff cards so the duels may take a few tries.
No matter which type of boss fights, I really recommend units to carry at least one full MP heals in their item slots. Finishing moves and healings/exocism/buffs should be used whenever necessary. For magic units, the MP regeneration is slow even with the MP recovery skill. so carrying a MP potion is a must. Mp potions are crafted with red magic herbs, and I find Phorampa Forest dungeon to tbe the earliest steady supply. Have a lookout on enemy cleric and mages and hope they will drop item bags. Usually they carry some magic herbs on them. Craft said magic herbs to full MP heals so players can rush the boss and finish the fight early.
Anyway thank you for the video and topic.

Couple of suggestions, for mid-late game combat.
    1. Healing via clerics tapers off, as in Ch.4 you still only have access to lvl 1 AoE healing, and lvl 3 single target healing only heals about 250hp. I find carrying healing items, which recover % HP, and using my clerics as Boon of Swiftness engines works much better.
    2. Speaking of Boon of Swiftness. Cast it on your White Knights, who should be mandatory once you get them. Quicker WK's means more procs of Velocity Shift which means more turns for everyone. Playing with the turn order makes everyone's lives easier.
    3. Gryphon's have stupidly low RT, native flight, and Dash II adds 3 movement when it pops. I like to use them to run around and grab cards before enemies can. As a monster it's also got tanky HP so give it % healing items and laugh mercilessly as they try to kill your king of the skies.
    4. Rampart Aura Is fun, and enemies are still kind of stupid. I like to run 2 dragons with Rampart, send them out, then pull back 1 square at a time so the enemy drops back into your Rampart aura again. Give ground an inch at a time while your more mobile units take out squishy casters and such.
    5. I noticed in the video you use Charm on your warlock. I too loved charming enemies, until I noticed the diminishing returns. Most enemies have native counterattack, so your charm (which I've only ever seen as high as a 60% chance), lasts one turn and results in a single enemy being dealt maybe 200dmg, then the return counter for negligible amounts. I've switched to Petriburst, so I can temporarily remove enemies from combat by turning them into stone. Though honestly my warlock mostly throws MP at my clerics so everyone can have Boon of Swiftness.
I enjoyed the content of this video on a whole though. I'm really enjoying the flashcards you use to split the sections, I've always been fond of little touches like that.
Congrats on hitting the 5k mark. I'll say it again, you provide solid content with accurate information and are never afraid to admit when you've made a mistake. I look forward to more videos about TO, and possibly seeing what your next project will look like.

All good points, tho we had a pretty spirited debate about the viability of clerics recently on stream. I fall on the side of them still being quite good, but I hear your points. Charm is another one that I think it quite good, as even if enemies have counter, it's not a guarantee that a hit will break charm, and you get free damage out of it.

@@TitaniumLegman Also you can get Major Heal 2 from the battle in Barnicia Castle where u fight Lanselot Tartoros. Its not that hard to get as long as u play not too fast and bring one or 2 Dragons who go to the front lines to drain enemy MP from the mage Templars, while you build up your MP for Finishers for Lanselot. Clerics are staple on my team for POTD and because of them I have little to no trouble keeping my units alive or resurrected. There is no need for Cudgels Weapon Skills on them as they are not needed for DPS. So I run Meditate, Insight (for boosted MP so that Fruit of the Adept does more MP charge on the first turn), Mother's Blessing, Mother's Mercy/Sanctuary depending on the map. I dont understand the need to use my Knights/White Knights or Rune Fencers for healers as that takes away their turn for Offensive stuff that they should be doing anyways. I also hear the argument for using items but to me item healing is only necessary for extreme situations where there is limited choice and bear in Mind that item healing has a very high RT value compared to having a dedicated unit to such healing. Mending Leaves are pratically useless the further you go into the game, and you are gonna be reliant on Mending Seeds and Salves but the high RT can be difference of u going before several enemies basically reduce your health back to the same amount you healed for or killing off your unit anyways because your RT got extremely high. The further you go in POTD the more you are gonna realize how valuable a Cleric can be to your survival. Well, that's just my opinion. Oh also Clerics usually have very low RT so bear that in mind as well. Thanks, Tom for sticking up for my messengers of the cloth you are a great friend to my fellow Sybils🤗😎

Xaebos was a teaching moment for me. Fought him probably 9 times before I started to think in the way your describing. I played LUCT so I was still under the mindset that I could brute force my way to a win. After I figured him out, I haven’t lost a fight to a big boss since. Knowing that just like in SMT, buffs/debuffs are not only good but borderline mandatory AND having in mind the tempo switch granted by resurrecting incap'd allies most boss fight become relatively easy. My Denam always carry the breach and physical atk debuffs items and I have a dedicated beast tamer with blowguns and lobber for boss fights. With a support archer, it can apply status ailment with a 100% chance once done debuffing the boss, allowing sleep / charm strats to cripple enemies formation. The 1-handed silence bow is also excellent to keep boss from deleting you early on.
Later in chp 4 / CODA, it can be replaced by a Fusilier with lob and a dedicated caster for status spells.

So, as a new to srpgs player, while I appreciate the framework (seriously, this was incredibly helpful) my struggle with Xaebos has been the first encounter of him along the narrow 2space bridge. Nobody covers it, and nobody talks about it. This being my first battle where I encountered an enemy team containing 2 terror knight and 2 dragoons, I constantly found my team frightened.

how I beat xaebos was just surrounded him with 2 gryphons 2 chickens or 4 gryphons 4 chickens and just use wizards/rune fencers/beast tamers with ice finishing blows (blowguns),can do same with leonar if not doing the duel, with leonar duel i just make it a point to get winged boots on denam and either use indirect magic to kill (wizard/warlock) or rune fencer with lvl 20 crossbow finishing blow, and you can just sit up on wall and leo cant reach ya :)

I never knew that this game had a community like this. I only ever played in PS1 way back and I basically had the AI clerics fighting each other while I was AFK. Completely ruined the game for myself by being insanely over powered. I'm glad I get to enjoy the game for real this time. I'm at level 65 in the Palace and loving every minute of the game.
I've been running a cleric in the Palace and, damn, they're really good. Mother's Blessing with Major Heal 2 has completed reversed a number of nightmare scenarios involving mages spawned next to me using level 3 area spells while holding crit cards.

Since the release of reborn, I have noticed some have commented that the A.I. has improved.
Just my opinion but I think it's worst.
The A.I. In most cases is just overly aggressive now. This can be exploited. Even when they rarely show caution; you can provoke them easily with a single unit into a full attack.

    • @TitaniumLegman
      @TitaniumLegman  2 года назад +1

I'd argue that the AI is aggressive to put pressure on the player, yes. But it's also good at controlling the terrain and taking cards, which is a big part of gameplay. I do think it's been improved.

The xaebos fight was the first one for me that made me realize that reborn was a LOT harder than let us cling together. I beat it on my second try, but man the Oz and Ozma fight in chapter 3 was tough. Curious to hear how you handled that one, with two very powerful bosses that constantly throw out level 2 AOE spells. I actually beat them on my second try (while managing to recruit the hydra), but it was tough. I’m really enjoying the steeper difficulty curve though, my one complain about the psp version was how it stopped being challenging after a point.

Yeah, I like that the HIGH COMMANDER actually puts up a big fight now, that was a fun surprise for sure. I also pushed with a lobber beast tamer to debuff Oz iirc.
