One thing that wasn't mentioned but is actually really important at end-game is countering. Paladin has the best counters in the game. Holy Sword can be used from long range and can be used early because it ticks multiple times, with each tick able to apply counter. Executors Sword can also be used from mid-long range and is nearly instant cast. Artist's main counter, Upward Stroke, on the other hand is low-mid range, but at least it's fast and provides push immunity. Artist can also flex in a 2nd counter with One Stroke, which has long range but a slow animation unless you give up its meter-gen tripod for swifter cast speed. Bard's main counter, Prelude of Storm is low range and doubles as their highest meter-gen skill, so unless you can predict when a counter will happen, this skill should always be used off cooldown. Bard can flex in a 2nd counter with Rhythm Buckshot, which is a mid range counter, but the tradeoff comes at the cost sacrificing a better utility or meter-gen skill. Nice overall comparison Myca. My favorite is Paladin 👼
I really agree with you. Countering is so important as a support. Like you said, Bard has the worst counter of the 3 supports. Very long animation, immobile + main source of identity gain so she has to use it constantly and most of the time you don't have it when the boss can be countered. Pala is really good at countering and Artist is 2nd.
Awesome timing. Mained bard when I played last year, life got it the way of dailies/weeklies and I fell behind. Fresh started and kinda have my heart set on artist
This was really well done and gives a great overview of all 3 supports for anyone that is not sure about supports. Even if you aren't playing a support yourself, it is still helpful to learn about them so you can understand the strengths/weaknesses of the support in your raid. Personally, I always duo with a support (my BF plays 3 Bards and 2 Artists) or play support myself (I have a paladin). As a dps, there are pros and cons to each support depending on your character. One of the best combinations we have is a Blue Gunlancer and Artist. Artist provides a lot of mobility that the Gunlancer is lacking, and the Gunlancer can greatly assist with shields and damage reduction. Basically means that any 2 dps that we get paired with are going to be able to greed for a lot more damage without fear of dying and the Artist gets to basically spam damage buff. With that said, even as a DPS remember to take into account what support you have and try to adjust your play to make their life easier too. When their life is easier you get more buffs and better placed heals if you need them.
2:41 This finally got changed in the last balance patch. You can fill up your meter bar with your Ultimate, to increase the duration of your Holy Aura (:
Good guide with nice information and pros and cons. I'd just like to add as a bard main that most likely based on KR and Western feedback the Bard will get a rework as her kit is a bit outdated compared to other two supports.
Paladin, best support ever. You can stand in everything, you dont take damage, you have chonky shield, your attack buffs rotate perfectly with eachother and your whole rotation is like 3 buttons :D
for me, artist is the best support. It just does everything. But it's mostly because of the inmensely strong uptime on the 10% buff, with 1750+swift and lv7 gems you can do up to 2 or 3 casts of the z buff in a row, it's just insane how much mechs you can push with it and how easy is to get noble support with it
As of the latest balance patch, Paladin awakening refills 80% of meter on activation (without needing to hit, although you still get some meter from hit), and refills meter even if you have blessed aura active.
I came back to the game and rolled an artist on the jump start servers. It's a lot of fun but it can also be incredibly frustrating to watch clueless pugs either straight up ignore your healing orbs and portals or use them randomly when they are already close to full hp or not in need of a cleanse / repositioning. Same thing with having to run after them to apply your shields because they refuse to stack up... I think if you don't have a static group to run with, Paladin would be an easier choice.
It's great to hear you talking about supports so excitingly haha. I just was having the thought of picking up a support for a bit now and wasn't sure which one. I really like bard just for being a mage class and that way it's way more fun dressing her than a paladin or a little girl but I wonder how bad the consumables consumption really is that you mentioned for Akkan and such?
Great video for new players. But, the only thing I disagree in this video is how highly you rank and seem to value Pally's heal. I've also heard you mentioned that on stream that his heals are great. I'm not a pally main, but I play two of them and an artist as alts and I'd argue he has the worst healing capabilities compared two the other 2 supports. One reason, is that the heal (BA) is slow because it ticks small rather then applies a surge heal and because of that, it puts your party members low of health already (assuming they're out of potions or it's on CD) at a higher risk of dying. Another reason is that your party has to be within the blessed aura to take advantage of the heal and we know a lot of junk goes on throughout raids so you're bleeding out heals when members aren't within range. Not only that, but the BA buff drop off instantly when you move out of it. At best, both the BA and holy protection (HP for short) are decent for chip damage party members take, but damage taken overall at different intervals by party members makes the healing capability of BA poor. Of course, NO one should be popping BA strictly for heals, that's a given fact. HP's heal is so minimal, that it's really only good to heal a hit or two of chip damage. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that you shouldn't play pally at all, but it's important to understand HOW his heals work and understand that he is not a healer in the slightest compared to the insane and huge heals artist and bards can throw out. Although I do agree that pally is the easiest to play of the 3 supports and easiest to pick up and learn, I'd say he's probably the worst of the 3 to be "effectively" used in a PUG (or semi pug) party. Pally shines when his party can minimize damage on their own (while being backed up with the smol shields and Godsent the pally offers) while maintaining, consistent, high damage because of how frequent BA can be cast. He also has great damage reduction (not shield) as you had mentioned with the DR buff thrown in BA, Godsent, and Holy Aura (if you run this). So, although he can't heal great and his shielding is on and off, in between, a good pally can minimize damage through his DR skills. The worst part about playing pally is partying with pugs that have a hard time minimizing damage while I, literally cannot throw a big heal at them. You literally just watch them slowly die or be on death's edge. Tldr pally is 1) Easy to play and learn 2) Average at best when in a pug/random party, but extremely good in a party that you are familiar playing with 3) Provides, great, consistent damage buff and damage reduction
Thinking of coming back to the game. Artist looks like the most fun support out of the 3. I just hope a new male support comes out ( i enjoy my eye candy while playing lmao ).
Pls note that Paladin gets much more harder and getting the highest ceiling if you play magic stream. All good endgame players prefer it over Drops of Ether.
I usually dont write comments but as of now I must thank you from the depths of my heart. As a new / returning (but forgot everything) player I really enjoy playing support classes and this helped me a lot to choose you described them perfectly and you gave a nice showcase of their visual playstyle. You definetly convinced me to start over as a Bard since I love challenges and her music showcase is hella cute. Thank you again I wish tou the best ❤ Ps: Maybe a little [best build for bard ] in the future ? :D
I was playing all three, but bard and artist felt too much spammy and didn't feel impactful. Paladins has his two buffs as gauge skills, has a very good identity and even for chaos dungeon the Z feels nicer than in comparison. Also he has an awesome learning curve when mastering the use of godsent law to help with greed and nukes. I wish pally had a better marking (light of judgment could be a marking and gauge skill) so that I could slot punishment or holy area.
ever tried to heal greeders with a paladin. . it doesnt happen. i feel like paladin healing are far less impactful than the other 2, so their shields are what defines them. even thought they have 2 heals they dont do very much. i think paladins are heavily more reliant on how good their party members are compare to an artist or bard because regardless whether they need to choose, they can full heal somebody when a paladin cannot in rough situations. i only play paladin but im more hesitant to greed dps with a paladin than i am with an artist or a bard because the only way im getting hp back is a pot.
I think you should reword the healing part a bit since it's a little bit misleading. For starter, Paladin heal is heal over time base, so it may not be best for immediate heal, so the style lean toward healing party early on. Bard heal is burst heal, heal the whole party almost to full in a very short duration, so the best playstyle is use it when the pt demands it (like during harsh mech or whole pt low health) Artist heal is more interesting since the it's more like leaving their for anyone who needs, making the dps decide when to heal, so it's like heal and forget type of playstyle. If you just rank how much they heal it's pointless cuz they all heal about the same amount factoring duration, it's just what type of healing.
If you watch the video, I do explain all of those things in detail for each class! I don't just rank how much they heal, the graphics are just another visual aid to gauge performance.
According to DPS meters, a really good support who brand/atk power buff 90%+ and damage buff often actually contributes the same amount of dps as the dps in your party.
@@Balyente exactly that, their buffs increase DPS but they don't actually deal good DPS on their own so let's say if your entire party wipes except for one person I would rather have it be a DPS because they actually can solo bosses.

I disagree with Paladin having a lot of heals. Although the Bard and Artist loses the ability to give the extra dmg buff if they decide to heal (due to cost of their class gage), but Paladin's heal feels significantly less than those 2.. It may just feel this way due to pally's heal is constant while artist and bard's heals are more instant and give a lot more. Other than I enjoyed ur video and always thanks for the content! P.s: Pally's Godsent Law only reduces -70% dmg if the first hit of the skill hits your ally. So you have to be pretty on point with the timing of your Godsent Law and requires the Pally user to know the boss mech's very well and always be on the look out for your dps.
Paladin actually does the most healing-- even though it isn't bursty like Bard and Artist. He gets to ALWAYS heal when he uses identity, where the other two need to pick--and that adds up to a lot, even if it doesn't feel as bursty. I'm glad you liked the video, thanks for your feedback too! Hope you're enjoying supporting in LA! :D
