A lot of you saying this was a backhanded compliment, but I think you have to remember that most actors struggle with mental health issues. Empathy is what makes you a good actor, but it also tends to cause anxiety and depression. And these issues are ESPECIALLY bad in those that start so young. What I see here is a woman admiring another woman who she knows has most likely struggled emotionally, but has kept it together in spite of those struggles. She is speaking from experience. Yes, it might be a little weird being that emotionally vulnerable with someone you hardly know. But guess what-that’s what actors do every single day. I do not envy them.
Wasn’t backhanded at all people just don’t understand that Australian and UK tone can land differently, Zendaya knows this because she is with Tom and always in UK, so you can tell she sees it as a genuine and real moment
I honestly thought Zendaya was trying to be sarcastic when she said "seem" (implying she's good a faking perfection but behind closed doors is probably a struggle). Some people can't tell when others are depressed because they hide it so well. It looks like Nicole is actually giving her a compliment but Zendaya is like "ma'am you must not know me very well". That's what I got. The people thinking this is back handed are just insecure.
Yeah it felt like Nicole saw something she had to learn the hard way being done naturally and immediately encouraged it. It positive reinforcement. Like a therapist sitting down with you and knowing exactly when to build you up. I think Nicole was admiring Zendaya for creating safe space where she’s at and not just where she has to go in order to find it. She was offering wisdom through admiration of a good habit.
Plus they’ve both been in the industry long enough to see people lose or have under developed identity and sense of self/self worth. High pressure job with people telling you how to act not just in work but in real life. A cycle of rejection with having to validate yourself to people. It’s no wonder why you see actors with major low self esteem and or get into addictions.
Nicole Kidman had been through SO much with surviving Tom Cruise and Scientology and having her own kids turned against her. She's evidently a caring, motherly person who's got the backs of younger folks in her industry
Who ever confirmed that her kids turned against her? Or was that just always a rumor? They’re never spoken abt their personal lives w their kids, tom nor nicole..

Also, the photo of her on a driveway, happy and relieved, that was used to spread the story that she leaving her lawyers office and oficialising her divorce from Tom Cruise was also debunked by herself, saying that it was taken from a different context. I appreciate Nicole for saying “keep the blankie until 85” and “there’s no reward” forgiving up things that comfort us. Like why does adulthood look like suffering and being uncomfortable for so many people? Do what brings you sanity in the crazy world.
Learning to cope with chaos and uncertainty is important. There will be a moment that life "takes your blankie" - you have to already know how to deal with that moment.
I think when we’re young we tend to brush off older people and their unsolicited advice but as we mature we realize that what they said can be very helpful and came from a good place
Those are great and meaningful words from Nicole Kidman! She genuinely cares and truly admires Zendaya as an ambitious, successful young woman. And every young person should hear her message. Support is crucial, you can't do it alone. Rest is a requirement, not a reward.
This is why you need to cultivate friendships with older people who share your experiences. Nicole is saying ‘hey you are taking care of yourself and that’s vital, don’t let anyone shame you for this good thing you’re doing’
I don't think she's one of the best young actresses, but there is no question Zendaya is the biggest star of her generation. And Nicole is right in that she is doing stardom and managing her career perfectly. Zendaya never says the wrong thing, treats everyone around her well, and is just overall beloved. The way she carries herself is quite admirable.
She’s basically saying keep good company and friends and support system around u till the end! Even if that support system is a blankey because everyone is not here for your highest good so be wise with who u allow into your circle
I always admired about Zendaya that she’s in that industry but instead of working for it she makes it work for her. She doesn’t let the system toss her around but clearly defines her boundaries and makes sure to keep those. She also seems to have very good people backing her up and like she’d check every contract thrice and like she wouldn’t ever sign anything she’s not fully aware of and fine with. It takes a lot of effort to really stand your ground like that.
I love this idea. I'm having the same realisation about mental health stuff. Like, if you need 3 meditations a day with breathing exercises and yoga regularly and a therapist to feel normally healthy - that's completely fine. It's you feeling good in a healthy is what matters❤️ no shame needed
It’s such an appropriate commentary from Nicole especially considering challengers is supposed to be an ‘adult’ film but is really the film for people who think they are adults- where physical developed, emotionally immature ‘adults’ do grown things in the most juvenile way possible. It’s the comedy for women and the drama girls film 💗🥂🎀
Interesting to see so many people struck by Zendaya's reaction and any perceived ungraciousness on her part. I read it as humility, but I am reminded that a compliment is only a compliment if the recipient perceives it as one. A good compliment stems from consistently observable actions, from knowing and/or being known. There's a difference between definitively saying someone is a certain thing (i.e., "you are") verses saying that they carry that illusion (i.e., "you seem"). That is no slight to Nicole because her intentions "seem" pure, but (like the aforementioned) these types of compliments are no more than meritless assumptions or time-filling rhetoric, which some people read as "backhanded". I dont think that was Nicole's intention, though.
Watching this clip out of context I actually think Zendaya was too gracious. How bizarre to be interviewing someone and then point out that although they seem stable there's an emotional support animal or service dog nearby outside of the frame. And then compare her to a kid with a blankie? It really did come off as backhanded and extremely condescending from my perspective. But maybe it's in the middle of a longer conversation about mental health where Zendaya voluntarily brought it up.
Also Zendaya is so cute, she was struggling to accept the compliment bc she knows she’s got a lot (like the rest of us) but Nicole sees she’s on the right path and is lovely to hear wiser ppl just say it like it is.
@AviusL I think Z was uncomfortable with the compliment and tried to deflect with something self deprecating. Zendaya does that quite a bit in interviews I've noticed. And it's very common to see in introvert generally. Z would've known the type of interview she was getting into when she agreed to it, Actors on Actors has been going a decade and has had some very famous people on it. Its become quite the thing for award nominees to do as press as it's less scary to have an extended interview with another actor. Since they moved into showing clips on various socials it's got a whole new audience. I highly recommend watching
What's giving you that vibe? Zendaya seemed very sincere to me. Her reaction is most people's when they are complimented. Slightly embarrassed but touched.
I had a stuffed animal from the age of 5-22. I gave it up during a big transition in life because I thought I needed to “grow up” and be “stronger.” Now at 25 I got myself another stuffed animal as replacement because I am actually stronger and mature enough to realise that finding comfort in something doesn’t make me a child... it makes me human.
Zendaya completely at a loss for what to say... She was monosyllabic the whole time. People can come up with a variety of excuses for their behavior ... At certain moments she gives off an air of arrogance.
Definitely! Nicole knows how rough life can be in the industry because she's been there and gone through it. It's so obvious that she was paying her a compliment and Zendaya took it as anything but.
