  • During a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, accused Waukesha parade attacker Darrell Brooks requested to represent him in his upcoming trial. "Yes, I do. I would like to represent myself pro per," Brooks answered the judge when she asked him if he wanted to represent himself. "I've already said it on record, to represent myself as a sovereign citizen."

What people who represent themselves don't get is that there is ZERO possibility that they will obtain a better outcome than they would have achieved if they had been legally represented. Either they will get the same outcome (and even then that is HIGHLY unlikely), or a worse outcome, which is almost always the case. but they will NEVER make their situation better.

Not true . Alot of times these court appointed lawyers want to get on the judges good side and be friends with the prosecutor . They work all day together and you think they gonna do what's best for you ? You live in a fantasy land if you think that.

Good luck on the real world yall

@@tuloko16 I think that's why they go to such pains to establish that it is his deliberate intention, competently aware of the risk and ramifications. The court may have recourse if it deems him incompetent, but after that, it is his own right to choose to be incapable. Let's face it, though: if he was a stable, well-adjusted and rational person, he'd know how to not plow a vehicle through a parade.

That's not an absolute. Avenatti represented himself, and engineered a mistrial. Most folks aren't capable, but a small number are. Yeah, I know Avenatti is in jail. There was never any other path for him. He's guilty as sin. Nevertheless he scored a mistrial. A lot of other folks have represented themselves and won.

@@elainejohnson6955 While he has the right, the judge must determine that he can compitently serve as a his defense. thus the questions. Its highly likely that one of two things will happen.
1.) she determines that he can not adequately defend himself and serve as his own council and require the lawyers stay on the case.
2.) Rule that he can adequately defend himself, but find out who has been giving him this false legal advice and then hold that person in contempt or a criminal referral.
Remember, when you represent yourself you are bound to the same rules and duties to the court as any other lawyer appearing before the court. you must follow all procedures and make valid legal motions (to the best of your ability) and most importantly you are bound to give the court full candor.
