I did /not/ expect them to illustrate that in the published version TTATT I had to take a moment for that scene tbh. but also the casual death of Gongyi Xiao (?) and the other disciples by snake nephew was also mildly traumatic. Although I agree with Stitch that Meatbun's casual approach to like severe horror is haunting but SVSSS has more of the "fridge horror" where you read the scene, and then realisation hits after. particularly of how much SQQ like downplays, compartmentalises, or just forgets and moves on for these like horrifying things! Like he died! and was like "oh well. Anyways!"
One thing that stuck out to me and that I just cant forget is how horrifying SVSSS ends. LBH in the current timeline is not much better than the original one and SQQ is in constant fear of upsetting him. He has to offer himself and his body to the guy who became his abuser, else he goes on a rampage. He gets raped and it hurts and it bleeds and it will never ever stop. Sure, LBH will get better at sex, but he will never accept a 'no'. Even tho he did like LBH at one point, SQQ did not love him in a sexual way or even in a romantic way. He just started to accept that this will be his life from now on, because there is no way he can escape LBHs obsession. In his narration he paints the picture as if its just a bit inconvenient and his disciple is just like a cute little puppy who doesnt know how sharp its teeth are, but that is just minimizing the trauma.

In avoiding becoming a human stick, SQQ wipes out the harem and becomes the only thing LBH wants. Thing, not person, or LBH would not have declared he'd leave the sect alone if SQQ came to him. Looking at what we were told of PIDW, that LBH was tame in comparison, he got SJ throught the trial that happened the same way, everything else is typical of the wuxia genre.

The rain was pouring down and blood was flowing. The mother had eaten the child's intestines. The boy was far away. ] I can't even imagine what's going on in Meatbun's head to write something like this, she's a genius.
If you like it you should definitely try to read Kaleidoscope of Death! Between people skinning young girls alive to turn their flesh into drums, a mother using her daughters and random people to cook a birthday cake and other messed up things, i guarantee you some very good night sleep! 😌🥲

While I think the scene with Xie Lian getting stabbed endlessly, was brutal for sure, I personally thought the scene sometime after where he goes to the battle field and asks the spirits “Do you hate?” was absolutely chilling.
actually after the XL stabbing scene, most of it are chilling, like when they saw Lang Ying and there are growing faces and limbs on his body, then Wu Ming chopped him to pieces
I think shi mei’s backstory in erha was absolutely nauseating. Watching your own father eat your mother alive in front of you as a child, and your mother screaming for you to run before your father does the same to you…yeah I’d be fucked up too lmao
The ending scenes of the black water arc just haunt me for some reason, personally. Something about the way 'you called for the wrong person' is said just chills me to the bone. Also the bit where Mei Nianqing discovers what happened to his friends is just horrific and devastating because you can feel his shock and despair.

I feel like in TGCF, the intro to The Fetus Spirit is scary. Like XL has been on missions with others, but this mission was a solo mission until HC showed up. It gave you a feeling that you had to watch your back or you'll be killed.
I think Little Mushroom was the scariest because it's so plausible and MDZS was the saddest. I recommend Psychic by Feng Liu Shu Dai, it's heartbreaking and terrifying.
You guys casually mentioning all the traumatic stuff that made me cry for days🥲 On a personal pain level, Yi City arc out of everything made me cry for a week straight I could not move on until I grieved and processed that part of mdzs 😭 I kept going over and over in my head “why” and cursing at mxtx😭 I loved all the characters so much that TO THIS DAY I still haven’t seen those episodes 🫠 For the second place, 2ha is just pain 🥲 That scene left me with such an impression?? It was hard to swallow tbh Meatbun really set the stage with that for the rest of the novel.
I think another scene in tgcf thats not directly scary but still so horrifying and sad is, when white no face scares him out of the bathtub and he clings to his mama and cries that a ghost is following him
I have one scene that broke me: In "How to Survive as a Villain" we have a character that goes crazy after war, and is the scene of him trying to find the body of his beloved in a battle field, crying because he couldn't save him and his country covered in blood. That scene feels like horror of war. (Sorry for any grammatical mistake, English is not my first language.)

The most bone-chilling scene I read recently was from a Korean martial arts novel called "doctor's Rebirth", the scene was about how the MC's teacher basically mapped out or studied his heart most creepily, and knows his worst fears and weaknesses and knows exactly how to use them so he can have the MC by his side always and place him in a garden where not even a single strand of his hair can get injured. His genuine obsession over MC with his cold-hearted reason just sends chills over my spins.

Honestly I think on a horror level though it matters which book was your first danmei. Since mdzs was my first, it really stayed with me for ages. I read erha right after tho so by the time I finally got to tgcf it was heartbreaking but not as impactful on a personal level 🙈
I haven't read "the guardian," but I read some other books like "fantasy farm" and "part-time daoist" and it can get spooky. I do like scenes where they are spooky but funny at the same time.
I just had a horrible horrible thought. In an extra in MDZS we see Xue Yang make tea from someone's tongue 👅 He lived with Xiao Xingchen for years and presumably did some of the cooking... 😱
SPOILER: Something scary and sad is a Wei Wuxian's thought. I think it's only a sentence, but the fact that that thought crossed his mind, well, is terrifying actually! It happened after Wen Ning killed Zin Zixuan and Wei Wuxian can finally move his body again. He rushed out of the cave (Wen Ning & Wen Qing allready gone) and he runs towards.... where? He can't do anything, some days have allready passed, he can't change the past, he can't change the fact that his sister's husband is dead, he can't save the Wen siblings, all is in vain. He suffered a lot, he cut off from his family, he lived in barren land, everyone hates him or is scared of him and at the end, he didn't succeded in keeping anyone safe! Never mind other people, even the Wen siblings are now dead. And then, a thought crossed his mind: GOOD! He felt relieved!!! After that, he felt quilty for his weakness. Like, what a person he has become? What that means for him, to feel free from the burden and responsibility that he had until now? He felt relieved and he hated himself emmediately, but the change was there, he was a different person after that littl, momentarily thought!! I found that really scary, how sercumstances are able to change the morality of people!!!!

Random thoughts to comments, A little late, I read a comment saying that it depends on which work you read first and it's true. I read HOB first, and one of the scenes that stayed with me for a long time and that left me feeling bad was the one of the father with the son on his back and being thrown from the wall and then the mother seeing how the bodies were against the ground (which had been described), she hit her own head until it broke because of the horror she had just witnessed. Then I read the part in ERHA about the mother and the baby, but the part about HOB seemed more tangible to me and I was already prepared, so, from scratch, I don't know how that scene in ERHA would have affected me, since it impacted me a lot HOB's. Also, I felt that the gore or more horror is toned down in the official English version of HOB, as a horror fan I noticed it right away, a scene that I expected was the one with the bride in the forest (Xuan JI), but when I read it I was a bit disappointed because it was simple when she grabbed the man. I don't know if it's because that's how the official English version will be or if it's already the final Chinese version. But even though, I'm glad that we finally have an official translation of all these books. [ERHA Spoiler] I did not finish ERHA, but there are also so many scenes that are also so good, like that valley or gorge with the feathered tribe on the wooden "boards", I read it quite a while ago, I don't remember accurately everything. And also the scene of the men in the tree in the lake, where if I remember correctly, he was suffering for several things but he was bathed in lava or molten iron? I really like fantasy, like, a lot, and those scenes were just like pure FANTASY. [HOB spoiler] In HOB is the first time that I felt scared while reading, like my heart was pounding and I was scared, was the scene with Shi Qingxuan and his brother being pursued by the other (just in case I don't say anymore), like, I could feel the horror and bad feelings and the situation through SQX, and because we are also very fond to him, I could feel terror in me for him, because WE know that he couldn't escape and the "bad guy" was playing, ufff, all the pursuing thing in that space was just chef kiss, so well done, and the horror lived trough SQX lived in me and left a print in my mind. I mean the final pursue, the before was a warm-up, and also because of that, the "bad guy" was just playing. And that just adds a cherry on this build up, because he was terrorizing SQX in purpose for his final piece... But I feel like this scene is better to read it in your space and in the mode of reading, so I don't mind if it is not commented by people, and also because of how much of a spoiler it is.
(MDZS spoilers ahead; also mentions of sexual abuse) I'm new to danmei and my first one was Mo Dao Zu Shi. One scene that messed me up even on the donghua (where most of it isn't shown, just hinted at) is Jin Guangshan's murder. Sure, he was a nasty man, but being gang raped to death is a fate that I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy. And the fact that he was helpless when it happened... *Yikes.* Edit: wrote guangyao instead of guangshan lmao🤦♂️
@@hanaribooru Basically Jin Guangshan is a horrible father and husband. He fathered so many bastards and one of his bastards (Jin Guangyao) came to seek fatherly love after his mother died. Instead he got kicked down the 100+ stairs. He later was recognized because he became a useful cultivator. Jin Guangyao never forgot how his mother was abandoned and died from illness. That she has gotten from her night job to feed her son. And other stuff. So basically he hired like 20+ women from the house his mother worked from. To basically ya know Jin Guangshan to death. He later killed those women to hide his crime.
one of the scariest and most shocking danmei scenes for me was how Chang Geng got the bone of impurity curse. When he was just born his aunt kidnapped him and then killed his cousin who was also a baby and literally fed the altered flesh of that baby to Chang Geng so that he would be a reincarnation of the evil god Wu Er Gu. Chang Geng suffered terrible nightmares and realistic hallucinations all his life and it only got worse as he grew up. he had to suppress his emotions, even the positive ones, to keep the curse under control.
I would have love to see some SVSSS scenes here too. Svsss has some body -horror parts. Even though it is true that Shen Qingqiu just face it in a very bravely way, but is still creepy
in Guardian the grandma's case was really sad. Like its scary bcuz it could happen to anyone like stitch said. And the psychological effect on the granddaughter can hardly be helped tgcf Book 4 surely made me cover my mouth bcuz its painful to read how helpless the characters were Ad 2ha yes that one is a nightmare...meatbun takes the crown when it comes to gore. You guys went easy on us with this scene atleast... Mdzs just lands a psychological blow with yi city. The gaslighting of xue yang is on another level. The mental breakdown of xiao xingchen was just too painful to read. Little mushroom was actually gory than i thought. And the idea of inevitable end, the numbered days it just builds up tension... You guys are not much familiar with svsss i remember. Buuut i wanna say in the extras the scene where shen jiu's severed legs are sent to his xiong qi ge...that was too much. Like the emotional pain, the manipulation on bingge's part, its underrated.

@@Adamaris_the_Witch Kaleidoscope of Death is about a guy who lives in a world where people receive the strange task of completing the "12 Doors of Life" that can appear randomly in front of you. Behind every door is a horrific dimension where the prisoners have to find the key to escape this scenery. I have a mid tolerance to horror and gore and the disturbing descriptions are very specific and highly detailed, i couldn't even finish the book... But i think if you are stronger than me (which isn't hard ngl), it can be super enjoyable!! Plus the MC and ML are very funny (we love cross-dressing here and there👁👄👁)
I have not read the books yet but Xue Yang in the untamed was one of my fave characters. At first I had thought he was played a bit over the top but I guess he wasn't! heh
Book four of TGCF was and is 100% my absolute favorite book of the series. Learning these parts of Xie Lian's back story was absolutely what made the series worth the read for me. I STRUGGLED through book three, but book four saved the whole thing for me.

I haven't read "the guardian," but I read some other books like "fantasy farm" and "part-time daoist" and it can get spooky. I do like scenes where they are spooky but funny at the same time.
I just had a horrible horrible thought. In an extra in MDZS we see Xue Yang make tea from someone's tongue 👅 He lived with Xiao Xingchen for years and presumably did some of the cooking... 😱

Something scary and sad is a Wei Wuxian's thought. I think it's only a sentence, but the fact that that thought crossed his mind, well, is terrifying actually! It happened after Wen Ning killed Zin Zixuan and Wei Wuxian can finally move his body again. He rushed out of the cave (Wen Ning & Wen Qing allready gone) and he runs towards.... where? He can't do anything, some days have allready passed, he can't change the past, he can't change the fact that his sister's husband is dead, he can't save the Wen siblings, all is in vain. He suffered a lot, he cut off from his family, he lived in barren land, everyone hates him or is scared of him and at the end, he didn't succeded in keeping anyone safe! Never mind other people, even the Wen siblings are now dead. And then, a thought crossed his mind: GOOD! He felt relieved!!! After that, he felt quilty for his weakness. Like, what a person he has become? What that means for him, to feel free from the burden and responsibility that he had until now? He felt relieved and he hated himself emmediately, but the change was there, he was a different person after that littl, momentarily thought!!
I found that really scary, how sercumstances are able to change the morality of people!!!!

Random thoughts to comments,
A little late, I read a comment saying that it depends on which work you read first and it's true. I read HOB first, and one of the scenes that stayed with me for a long time and that left me feeling bad was the one of the father with the son on his back and being thrown from the wall and then the mother seeing how the bodies were against the ground (which had been described), she hit her own head until it broke because of the horror she had just witnessed. Then I read the part in ERHA about the mother and the baby, but the part about HOB seemed more tangible to me and I was already prepared, so, from scratch, I don't know how that scene in ERHA would have affected me, since it impacted me a lot HOB's.
Also, I felt that the gore or more horror is toned down in the official English version of HOB, as a horror fan I noticed it right away, a scene that I expected was the one with the bride in the forest (Xuan JI), but when I read it I was a bit disappointed because it was simple when she grabbed the man.
I don't know if it's because that's how the official English version will be or if it's already the final Chinese version. But even though, I'm glad that we finally have an official translation of all these books.

I did not finish ERHA, but there are also so many scenes that are also so good, like that valley or gorge with the feathered tribe on the wooden "boards", I read it quite a while ago, I don't remember accurately everything. And also the scene of the men in the tree in the lake, where if I remember correctly, he was suffering for several things but he was bathed in lava or molten iron?
I really like fantasy, like, a lot, and those scenes were just like pure FANTASY.

In HOB is the first time that I felt scared while reading, like my heart was pounding and I was scared, was the scene with Shi Qingxuan and his brother being pursued by the other (just in case I don't say anymore), like, I could feel the horror and bad feelings and the situation through SQX, and because we are also very fond to him, I could feel terror in me for him, because WE know that he couldn't escape and the "bad guy" was playing, ufff, all the pursuing thing in that space was just chef kiss, so well done, and the horror lived trough SQX lived in me and left a print in my mind.
I mean the final pursue, the before was a warm-up, and also because of that, the "bad guy" was just playing. And that just adds a cherry on this build up, because he was terrorizing SQX in purpose for his final piece...
But I feel like this scene is better to read it in your space and in the mode of reading, so I don't mind if it is not commented by people, and also because of how much of a spoiler it is.

I'm new to danmei and my first one was Mo Dao Zu Shi. One scene that messed me up even on the donghua (where most of it isn't shown, just hinted at) is Jin Guangshan's murder. Sure, he was a nasty man, but being gang raped to death is a fate that I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy. And the fact that he was helpless when it happened... *Yikes.*

Basically Jin Guangshan is a horrible father and husband. He fathered so many bastards and one of his bastards (Jin Guangyao) came to seek fatherly love after his mother died.
Instead he got kicked down the 100+ stairs. He later was recognized because he became a useful cultivator.
Jin Guangyao never forgot how his mother was abandoned and died from illness. That she has gotten from her night job to feed her son. And other stuff.
So basically he hired like 20+ women from the house his mother worked from. To basically ya know Jin Guangshan to death. He later killed those women to hide his crime.
one of the scariest and most shocking danmei scenes for me was how Chang Geng got the bone of impurity curse. When he was just born his aunt kidnapped him and then killed his cousin who was also a baby and literally fed the altered flesh of that baby to Chang Geng so that he would be a reincarnation of the evil god Wu Er Gu. Chang Geng suffered terrible nightmares and realistic hallucinations all his life and it only got worse as he grew up. he had to suppress his emotions, even the positive ones, to keep the curse under control.
I like watching Stitch telling stories while you reacting to it hahaha

I would have love to see some SVSSS scenes here too. Svsss has some body -horror parts. Even though it is true that Shen Qingqiu just face it in a very bravely way, but is still creepy
in Guardian the grandma's case was really sad. Like its scary bcuz it could happen to anyone like stitch said. And the psychological effect on the granddaughter can hardly be helped

Mdzs just lands a psychological blow with yi city. The gaslighting of xue yang is on another level. The mental breakdown of xiao xingchen was just too painful to read.
Little mushroom was actually gory than i thought. And the idea of inevitable end, the numbered days it just builds up tension...
You guys are not much familiar with svsss i remember. Buuut i wanna say in the extras the scene where shen jiu's severed legs are sent to his xiong qi ge...that was too much. Like the emotional pain, the manipulation on bingge's part, its underrated.

I have a mid tolerance to horror and gore and the disturbing descriptions are very specific and highly detailed, i couldn't even finish the book... But i think if you are stronger than me (which isn't hard ngl), it can be super enjoyable!! Plus the MC and ML are very funny (we love cross-dressing here and there👁👄👁)

Book four of TGCF was and is 100% my absolute favorite book of the series. Learning these parts of Xie Lian's back story was absolutely what made the series worth the read for me. I STRUGGLED through book three, but book four saved the whole thing for me.
