This is a good topic, and a dilemma I've been struggling with. I love collecting toys, but I'm realizing that my collection is getting out of hand.
But for every five toys I buy, I'm selling off an older one now. Not great, but better than I was before. And I only buy what I'm interested in.
I know I'm filling a void in my life, and I am trying to work on scaling back my collection.

    • @dgray3771
      @dgray3771 4 года назад

Problem is not that you get multiple toys of the same line or lets say 3 reflectors. But if you buy 30 sharkticons you basically take too many.I got 3 sharkies could go with 5 but not more than that.
Also, Scalping, another issue, is a really bad thing. Buying rare items a lot to then sell it for profit. Selling for profit isn't bad, but if you do so at the cost of collectors on and around release date that is a sad practice. Especially for those who don't have that much money, love to hunt toys and then to see the self emptied and finding that same item for insane prices on ebay a day later.

Here's my 2 cents. This doesn't happen in toys collecting alone and I'm against hoarding and all don't get me wrong but hey it is what it is, everyone has their own reasons, welcome to the real world... But what really grinds my gears is when this scalper as*holes are trying to sell the items for a ridiculous inhumane price!

Great clip! Very true about hoarding. There is a fine line. I refrain A LOT from buying TF. I bought 2 at Toys R Us this week and this was the conversation I had in my head. :
    1. I am buying because I love TF, they make me happy,
    2. I love Toys R Us and want to support my local toy stores.
(Too many toy stores close their doors and I think that is really sad.)
    3. I want to support the brand and makers.
    4. I am not selling any of my TF (yet) because I enjoy having them in my house. I know that at the end of the day they are just things. But Life is short. Do what makes you happy, but don't let that be the only reason for your existence. You must care and not care at the same time.
    5. They bring me back to when I was young, my family, my friends.
So long live the toys and brands that bring joy in our lives!!!

Living in the south, far from GH and Mega and all I can rely on are the TKs and TRUs in the nearby malls, you really can't explain the disappointment to see that the cases that arrived contains only the figures that you don't intend to get, after going back and forth to their stores almost every day to check.

I’m glad you’re discussing this. It can be an issue at times. I am like that with DVDs, Blu-rays, action figures/toys. I used to be like that with records, and music and most of all in comics. It wasn’t for scalping. I just loved comics and like an alcoholic - I couldn’t stop! *nervous laugh* So comics got (for me) really crap. So it was easy to burn out on it all and say, “Ok I don’t need to buy these any more.” So that’s good.
For army building - I don’t bother with dioramas. So I would only get say 5 Daleks, and one or two Stormtroopers.

Going through your archives Chefatron and came across this. Great PSA for us collectors our there! The key word is 'hobby'. There are too many abusing their advantages and it's definitely hurting the community across the globe. With all the retail exclusives, we should be helping each other and not gouge or rip each other off. This is the main reason why this hobby is hitting sky high prices and if we were to help each other out instead of hoard, I bet we'd see much more favourable price points. Thanks for the discussion my man!

For me my hoarding comes from not having the things as a child, that I have as an adult. I'm a family guy with a decent job and after tending to my household , I have to reach out to my inner child. Having the means to make the purchase or waiting on that preorder is a rush. It's like gambling the thrill of winning or losing it all. Once I have anything in storage, I loose interest and want some more. But the reduction in scale and quality in transformers has me on the fence about future collecting. I wonder if theirs somebody out there feeling me or maybe I'm just weird like that. Thanks Chef!

So, now that I'm a single, childless engineer and can afford it, it's become my thing, my 'Adult Toy Collection '. Funny thing about it is that the ladies I meet don't much mind lol. The one that surprised me the most (because army-building and reselling at sinful high prices I can understand) is the one where you want a toy, finally find it, but then keep buying it again...
I have toys I really want and may not be very easy to find. But, once I get them, that's it. Buying it again when I only wanted one would not bring me any good feeling. It is sad if people really need to get their highs from repeat buying a toy they do not need/want in the same way they did when they did not have it.

I have to disagree with the application of the ‘hoarding’ tag in conjunction with scalping, because the purpose of scalping is to winnow for a profit. The entire point of the purchase is resell it. That said, if they cannot sell it well, and end up buying more than they sell, that applies fully; this in my opinion, is the true face of hoarding. The lack of any ability to choose NOT to accumulate.

i agree with you about fake altruism. But I am also a fan of the free market. If i WERE hasbro running a business to make money I should not care that much about who bought the items just that I can make high sales. If it's a scalper coming in before the regular customer, and it means I get the money earlier and faster, then I guess you could say it's not my problem. But I think what has to happen is toy retailers should ask the suppliers for some kind of exclusive contract to get the figure in earlier than their rival if they pay a little bit extra or make a deal where they keep the toys longer on shelves to help the toy company. Space is limited in stores so toy company needs to look at the competitor toy makers as muscling in on their marketshare when their toys fill up the shelves and push their own toy off the shelf. So the toy company need to discuss to the retailer what ways they can help them out in a competitive market. Transformers are one of those action figure lines that appeal to wide range of ages. The best ones are the masterpiece collection but the big ticket items and newer figures seem to be adults who remeber the comic book and tv show from the 80s. So the system needs to change if you don't want people to miss out on a character they want. How about direct order of the toy from the retailer before its out and this help save space because when the item comes in the customer can take it off the shelf immediately and save the shop space? Things like this are how to make both customer happy and the toy company and the retailer.

I don't see why people hoard. I was collecting partially for the high but that feeling is completely gone. Now I only get things that catch my eye. No hunts or anything. I'll buy less than 10 figures this year. Most likely 4. I tend to burn out on things. I may be done collecting altogether by next year.

Would the custom\modding be considered hoarding as well? Just thinking about the recent seekers the Rain Makers and how that could be used to create a indirect form of hording. A customiser\modder may want to buy multiple packs of the Rain Maker sets to create different variants of seekers seen or not seen in all series. Or even multiple Optimus Primes to make Nemesis Prime or Dark Mirror Optimus Prime. Even multiple collecting a figure to make a custom that was never done to it before, just to make a variety of different custom characters. Kind of like taking the Prowl mold and making your own Blue Streak, Smokescreen or generic Autobot soldier.

Scalpers are the plague of this hobby. Those crooked bastards buy up all of a particular figure, and sell it at an exorbitant price. I say collect because you genuinely love the hobby and help other collectors whenever you can in their collecting endeavors. That’s the true joy of all this. And for real for real, I only need to collect what I like. Some things I’m going to miss out on and I’m not gonna stress over that.

The thing I hoard is Harlan Ellison (legendary story writer) works, which includes his anthologies, comics, and his DVD. I have a collection of 38 pieces of his works and it took 10 years to find the first piece, which was I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. Btw here is a joke about wanting to take your earthly things with you after death... A rich man wants to take all his money with him to heaven, so he buys it all in gold bars and gets buried with it. He then walks up to the gates of heaven with all the gold bars and an angel says, "Oh great, you brought some pavers for the road". ;)

Another thing: I kinda dropped out of the macross toy collecting scene after the toys became obscenely hard to obtain. I just said one day "screw this crap I am going to sink my money into gaming" and I feel a lot of stress has been lifted from it. Bandai deliberately makes it hard for people to get by as a method to icrease demand and save on the risk of unsold stock so it causes scalpers and "army builders" to go and buy more than their share which only compaounds the problem for the normal people who just want 1 of the thing. I feel like whoever is scalping or hoarding you are the problem for fans of the toys who get angry that they can't find anything. You are not heroes saving the world. If you want to save something and help you might be better off donating to the poor or helping people in the community not buying up all the optimus prime figures and making me cry because it's so hard to find. Oh BTW I never once saw a Siege Springer figure in my local retailers and that was the one I really wanted. I had to rely on some random guy to buy it for me on amazon and then it was only because he was on the way to my house when I sold a older transformer. (it was convenient because he was already getting stuff there) Now imagine if this random guy didn't want to assist in "the hunt" and I couldn't get the figure? You would have deprived me of the toy and I would eventually at some point give up altogether and miss out. So although you don't need therapy (it's a free market you can do what you feel) don't think that buying up everything is helping. The random guy who doesn't have time to search every store will eventually spend all his money elsewhere and then hasbro will lose customers in the long run once those guys abandon trying to find the figures. Now we do live in the age of the internet so it's easy to get them online but the retailer suffers and when they don't stock anymore toys due to perceived lack of interest, it will hurt you too when you go to the retail because they have limited space and will only stock what sells the best in order to stay afloat. (space is limited so things that sell bad have less space devoted to them)
My solution is customers need to pressure retail to have preordering system for specific things and then pay a little bit more than a regular customer for the service of garuanteeing the character they want. This way it eliminates risk. And the regular customer never has to worry about the scalper buying it all up before they get there. I think if retailers knew more about their customers that would also help. Some are still stuck in a 1990s mindset.

I don't really understand this video. You are seemingly butthurt because you think ppl have too many figures of a character? I hate scalpers just like any collector. But the premise to me is flawed. If i have a kenner superpowers superman, a mattel superman, and a mcfarlane superman to me that means I am a superman fan and enjoy collecting that memorabilia. If i buy a mcfarlane superman everytime i see one and have a pile of 50 of them in the corner yeah that could be hoarding but i have never heard or seen anything remotely close to that in decades of collecting. Army building is a whole other can of worms but usually that is reserved for a Grunt or generic solider type figure ( i.e. stormtrooper) you state as much, but again you implore ppl to stop. This is a hobby and done for entertainment. Its not like hoarding toilet paper or medicine the public needs. I'd like to think you are coming from a good place but everyone is different and you can't police what they buy or how they buy it.
