데뷔 싱글 ‘비가 내리는 밤에’
폭발적 가창력이 지배하던 R&B 씬은 특히 국내에서 큰 변화를 겪었다. ‘어번(urban)’의 특징 중 ‘stylish’, ‘sophisticated’ 등의 표현이 중심으로 자리했고, 일렉트로닉의 비약적 발전이 더해지면서 R&B 뮤지션은 더 이상 소몰이를 하지 않아도 되는 환경이 만들어졌다. 그리고 이러한 환경의 변화는 많은 R&B 싱어송라이터 스타들을 탄생시키고 있다. 괴물 보컬리스트를 키워내야 하는 R&B 씬의 목표가, 절제와 조화를 통한 세련됨의 창출로 옮겨갔다. 자이언티, 크러쉬, 딘, 그리고 한국 스페셜리스트 제프 버넷(Jeff Bernat) 등... 현재 R&B씬의 스타로 자리매김한 싱어송라이터들은 공통적으로 유려한 멜로디를 그려내고, 자유자재로 리듬을 쪼개며, 속삭이듯 노래한다.
이제 스무 살, 대중 앞에 자신의 첫 결과물을 선보이는 빌런은 현재 씬을 지배하고 있는 천재 R&B 싱어송라이터들의 장점들을 한 몸에 담아낸다. 달콤한 멜로디를 그리고, 그려진 멜로디를 리듬으로 끊어낸 뒤, 보컬로 최상위 레이어를 얹으며 곡 전체를 연결한다.

케이지(Kei.G), 정진우에 이어 산타뮤직 산하 레이블 ‘플라네타리움 레코드’의 세 번째 주자로 출격한 빌런. 케이지의 프로듀싱을 통해 탄생한 빌런의 음악 또한 앞선 두 뮤지션의 음악과 비슷한 색을 보여준다. 협업과 공감을 통해 레이블의 색이 완성되어 간다고 볼 수 있다.
오랜 친구 정진우의 앨범 수록곡 ‘집에 있을게’에 피처링으로 참여한 바 있는 빌런은 이번 싱글 ‘비가 내리는 밤에’로 정식 데뷔했다. ‘사람들은 내게 미쳤어. 다들 뭐라 해도 상관 없어’라는 가사의 부분을 보듯 곡에서의 일감은 ‘당참’이다. 곧 폭발할 듯 넘쳐나는 스무 살 청춘의 자신감, 그리고 반대로 지울 수 없는 스무살의 풋풋함이 공존한다.
